Oak Bay Eagles, Oak Bay BC - 2019-2023 Seasons

Post by sassyk » Fri Oct 21, 2022 4:16 pm

This is the starting post for the 2022-2023 nesting season.

I visited all 4 nests in Oak Bay with my birding partner on Wed. Oct. 18th. It was a bit hazy and the sun was behind the nest tree when we visited the Golf Course nest on Beach Dr. I took only 1 photo but it wasn't worth saving; it was in the fog :( We did not see or hear any eagles in the area and didn't chat with anyone walking by.

The sun was shining when we visited the Lansdowne-Uplands nest but we did not see or hear any eagles. We chatted with a fellow who said he had seen an eagle the day before perched atop the usual perch tree near the Victoria Yacht Club. We went to see if an eagle was there but no luck. I did take a few photos of the nest tree and we thought there was a bit of new greenery in the nest :thumlft:

We did not see or hear any eagles in the area of the York Place nest. However we did chat with a neighbour who told us he has seen one around the nest recenty :thumlft:

This first photo was taken from Prospect Pl. which is the street behind the nest tree.

We visited the nest on Sylvan Lane but did not see or hear any eagles. However, one of the neighbours told us the eagles have been in and out at the nest recently. There were remains of a crow and a gull at the base of the nest tree.

I was in Oak Bay on Saturday, Dec. 3rd. As we were driving along Beach Drive I spotted an adult eagle perched way up high in one of the trees behind the private school, presumably from the York Place nest. A little further along the road I saw 2 adult eagles soaring overhead, presumably from the Golf Course nest. Unfortunately I wasn't able to get out of our vehicle to take some photos.

I visited the Oak Bay eagle nests yesterday with my birding partner. We were happy to see one of the eagles sitting in the nest on Beach Drive and Lansdowne Rd. We went down the road to the dead end street where the eagles usually perch near the yacht club but the tree was empty :( Photos of the eagle and the nest tree.

Oak Bay Eagle Nests (cont'd)

We were happy to see an adult eagle, who we thought was the female, perched above the nest site on York Place. Sadly, it looked like most of the nest has fallen down :(

Good news :thumlft: The eagles that have used the nest at York Place that fell down recently, have built a new nest. It is in the same tree at Willows Beach where they had a nest for many years. That nest blew down in the early 2000's, with 2 eaglets in it; the eaglets did not survive :cry1:

I visited this new nest with my birding partner yesterday, Mar. 22nd. The female was in the nest incubating :woohoo: An intruder juvenile eagle flew in and the male adult chased it away. The female flew out to make sure the juvenile had left the area then she settled in the nest again. The male flew in and landed on a branch near the nest; it appeared he had prey which he ate while perched on the branch.

March 22nd cont'd.

The female was hunkered down in the nest when we visited the Uplands/Lansdowne
nest. She popped her head up for a couple of seconds and I missed getting a photo :(

The male was perched down the road in the usual tree near the yacht club. He was trying to keep his balance in the wind while scratching and preening.

I visited the Golf Course nest with my birding partner on March 22nd. One adult was in the nest, moving sticks and looking like it was incubating and/or rolling eggs :woohoo:

The lighting was not in our favour for taking photos  Here are a few captures.

I visited the Lansdowne/Beach Dr. eagle nest site on Apr. 25th with 2 of my birding partners. One of the adults was perched above the nest when we arrived just before 3pm; it looked like it had been hunting or fishing. There was a dark area just below its head. It perched for approx. 15 mins. then hopped down into the nest. It flew up to the branch above the nest a few mins. before flying off. It came back later and perched above the nest on the same branch. It looked as though it might have been fishing and was preening. It flew off and came back again before flying off at approx. 4:50pm. We stayed for another 20 mins. but neither of the eagles came back to the nest. We heard eaglets cheeping in the nest but they were too small to see :thumlft:
