Apr. 21st: Sylvan Lane Nest
An eagle was in the nest incubating; however I did not capture it in any of my photos.
These 2 photos are of both sides of the nest.

One of my birding friends has reported seeing an adult feeding 2 eaglets in the Lansdowne/Beach Dr. nest recently :woohoo:

I visited the golf course nest May 21st but did not see or hear any eagles in the area. However, there does appear to be some white that could be head feathers on the right of the main trunk.

One of my friends who monitors the Oak Bay nests checked on all 4 nests early this morning. There are 2 in the Lansdowne/Beach Dr. nest, as well as young in the York Pl. nest and Sylvan Lane nests, but no action at the golf course nest :(

I visited some of the nests in Oak Bay on May 25th. One of the adults from the Lansdowne/Beach Dr. nest was perched on the snag down the road near the Yacht Club. It was watching the neighbours working in their yard.

There was no action at the nest but I can see the heads of the 2 eaglets in the nest.

York Pl. Eagles, May 25th.

I did not see either of the adults but did catch glimpses of the 2 eaglets in the nest. These 2 photos were taken from York Place.

I visited the nests in Oak Bay on June 10th with my birding partner. We had been observing the nest on Beach Dr. at Lansdowne Rd. for awhile when the Dad flew into the nest. Then the 2 eaglets started squawking and we were sure he had dropped prey for them. He perched above the nest for awhile then flew off. We observed the eaglets self feeding. We found the female perched on the snag down the road.

We visited the York Pl. nest on June 10th and didn't see or hear any eagles or eaglets for awhile. Then an adult started squawking and we spotted her perched on a branch below the nest site, with a crow harassing her.

This was one of their perch trees across the road from the current nest tree and near the Fire Hall where they had their other nest for many years. We noticed a few years ago that the tree was dying :(

June 10th York Pl. cont'd.

We caught a few glimpses of one of the eaglets behind the trees on the left side of the nest. The wind was gusting and that was probably why the eaglets wanted to stay under cover.

On June 10th our last nest to visit was the one on Sylvan Lane in Oak Bay. There are 2 eaglets in the nest, as well as a bunch of feathers and remains of what we think are a small goose. The Mom was perched above the nest with the crows harassing her :(

I visited the Lansdowne/Beach Dr. nest on July 11th. Sadly I didn't see either of the eaglets or the adults in or near the nest tree. I had hoped to see one down the road on the top of the snag but no luck :( However, when I zoomed in on one of my photos I thought I could see what looked like an adult on the small island offshore.

I visited the York Place nest also and heard an eaglet squawking. I finally saw it perched on a branch to the left of the nest half hidden behind the tree trunk. I thought I saw a 2nd one amongst the greenery

My birding partner visited the York Place nest on July 14th but she did not see any adults or eaglets :(

Both eaglets were visible at the Sylvan Lane nest; one in the nest and one on a branch :thumlft:

2021 Cam Maintenance
Matching Drive

A little over 17 weeks ago, we met Tiku from our Surrey Reserve nest; this is just before he or maybe she made it all the way out of the shell:
Image

And now Tiku and Tucca from Surrey Reserve and Hope and Chase from Delta 2 have all set out to explore the world.

We do still have one young eagle to watch - this is Romeo from our White Rock nest, who hatched 6 weeks later than Tiku:
Image

At 11 weeks, he (or maybe she) is practicing perching on the nest supports and exercising those big wings. Eaglets generally fledge (take their first flight) between 10 and 14 weeks, and it's my guess that will happen in the next week or so.

And you know - I haven't really thought about this before - but our little window to access the nests and clean the cams and do any other necessary work isn't always that much longer than the 35-40 days it takes an egg to hatch. Last year the Surrey Reserve adults didn't leave until August 14 (though they weren't visiting very often after Thor left in mid-July) - and Dad Sur was back on September 26. Different pairs have different schedules - and it can vary from year to year - so it would be great if we could get ready now.

With that in mind....
Image

We will be posting more details about our Adopt-a-Nest program, the new option to adopt one of our eagles with a tracker (details soon), the Monthly Donor program - and the work we need to do on the 10 cameras we now have at five different nests.

The important thing to know is that at least the first $1000 in donations toward our cam maintenance fund drive will be matched by long-time supporters of Hancock Wildlife - so the time to donate is now!
