I visited the winery site with my birding partner on June 1st. We saw 1 eaglet in the nest and an adult perched at the top of the nest tree. The eaglet kept looking up at the adult :rh:

I have had confirmation from Elyse at the winery that there is only one eaglet in the nest this season :)

I visited the nest site on July 4th and did not see or hear any adults in the area. I saw what looked like a black wing sticking up in the nest but no movement :chin: The eaglet could have been behind the nest on a branch but I am going to send Elyse an email to confirm the eaglet is OK. I took these photos from different vantage points along the road.

2021 Cam Maintenance
Matching Drive

A little over 17 weeks ago, we met Tiku from our Surrey Reserve nest; this is just before he or maybe she made it all the way out of the shell:
Image

And now Tiku and Tucca from Surrey Reserve and Hope and Chase from Delta 2 have all set out to explore the world.

We do still have one young eagle to watch - this is Romeo from our White Rock nest, who hatched 6 weeks later than Tiku:
Image

At 11 weeks, he (or maybe she) is practicing perching on the nest supports and exercising those big wings. Eaglets generally fledge (take their first flight) between 10 and 14 weeks, and it's my guess that will happen in the next week or so.

And you know - I haven't really thought about this before - but our little window to access the nests and clean the cams and do any other necessary work isn't always that much longer than the 35-40 days it takes an egg to hatch. Last year the Surrey Reserve adults didn't leave until August 14 (though they weren't visiting very often after Thor left in mid-July) - and Dad Sur was back on September 26. Different pairs have different schedules - and it can vary from year to year - so it would be great if we could get ready now.

With that in mind....

We will be posting more details about our Adopt-a-Nest program, the new option to adopt one of our eagles with a tracker (details soon), the Monthly Donor program - and the work we need to do on the 10 cameras we now have at five different nests.

The important thing to know is that at least the first $1000 in donations toward our cam maintenance fund drive will be matched by long-time supporters of Hancock Wildlife - so the time to donate is now!

Unfortunately I did not have the opportunity to visit the nest area again after my July 7th visit. I have had confirmation from Elyse at the winery that the eaglet did indeed successfully fledge :woohoo: I hope it has been enjoying a banquet of spawned out salmon in the rivers in Alaska :rh:

I have locked this thread and will open a new thread for the 2021/2022 season when the eagles have returned to their nest territory looking healthy and well fed. Hoping they produce a family next spring :luck:

This is the opening post for the 2021-2022 nesting season.

Please feel welcome to post your observations and photos if you visit the nest site in beautiful Deep Cove :)

I visited the nest site on Oct. 13th but did not see or hear any eagles in the area. The nest looks intact and waiting for the return of the eagles to commence nestorations for the 2021-2022 season.

I finally got out to visit some eagle nests this past Wednesday with my birding partner. There were no eagles seen or heard in the area; however one of the construction workers told us he had seen one fly from the nest towards the ocean earlier in the day. Unfortunately when we had flooding in the area the creek that runs behind the winery caused a huge sinkhole in Chalet Road. You can see the damage here.

A couple of photos of the nest tree.

I did a tour of some of the eagle nests on the Saanich Peninsula with my birding partner on Apr. 13th. An eagle was sitting in the nest and a short while later the 2nd eagle flew in with a large prey. We weren't sure what the prey was but it was very large and furry

Apr. 13th cont'd.

The eagle in the nest didn't seem to be eating or feeding young and the 2nd eagle stayed in the nest for awhile before flying off.

I received an update this morning from Elyse at the winery. They have officially spotted two eaglets and they both look great and strong :woohoo: This is very good news indeed :thumlft: I am planning another trip out on the Saanich Peninsula next week and will stop at the winery.

I did a tour of some nests on the Saanich Peninsula with my birding partner on Apr. 28th. The Winery nest was our last stop and fortunately we didn't get rained on, although the weather was a mixed bag that day.

One of the adults was in the nest with the 2 eaglets that made a few very brief appearances.

The 2nd adult flew into the nest but didn't appear to be carrying any prey.

Both of the adults flew out of the nest at different times; one returned and perched at the top of the nest tree behind the greenery where we couldn't see it. It was still there when we left.
