I have locked this thread but will open a new thread for the 2021/2022 season once the eagles have returned to their nest territory. Hoping they return healthy and well fed and produce a family in the spring :luck:

This thread includes the 2021-2022 nesting season. You are welcome to post observations and photos of the eagles if you visit their nest territory :thumlft:

This is the opening post for the 2021-2022 nesting season.

Good News!! Pa has returned to his nest territory!!

I visited Pa's nest site on Oct. 13th and was thrilled to see him sitting in the snag nest :woohoo: We saw a 4 yr. eagle soaring overhead but did not see a 2nd adult.

I was finally able to get out to visit some eagle nests this past Wednesday with my birding partner. We saw Ma perched in the usual tree near the nest tree and saw Pa perched in a tree a short distance up the road. We were able to stop at the new driveway adjacent to the Epicure property to get a few photos of Ma and the snag nest. We weren't able to pull off the road in time to get a photo of Pa after we left the driveway but he was still there watching over his territory when we drove back down West Saanich after visiting a couple of other nests. We were able to pull off on a side street to get a photo of Pa. The lighting was terrible so the photos are not very good quality.

This is Ma.

I did a tour of some of the nests on the Saanich Peninsula with my birding partner on Apr. 13th. We saw an eagle that looked like Ma perched in the tree at the corner of the property nearest the beach. The weather was very unpredictable from one minute to the next.

This was the first photo I took of Ma.

I took this photo from the road above the beach. You can barely see an eagle in the nest.

Another photo of Ma before we walked up the road to view the nest. The sky was very dark which made the lighting on Ma quite nice.

Ma & Pa cont'd.

I managed to snap 3 photos of Pa in the nest before the rain & sleet started. We were soaked by the time we made it back to our vehicle.

It was time for a bite to eat and a hot coffee at the market; we needed time to dry off :D An eagle was perched on the side of the nest when we drove by but we didn't have time to stop for any photos. When we arrived at the area where the First Nations reserve land ends, I spotted an eagle at the top of a tree overlooking the beach. We stopped for a few minutes to get some photos. This eagle looks like Ma so it was Pa perched on the side of the nest.

I visited the nest area with my birding partner on April 28th. We saw one of the adults, looked like Pa, sitting on the side of the nest, feeding an eaglet/s. The sky was very dark and threatening rain so the lighting was terrible.

I was very lucky to capture an eaglet beside the adult in the nest :woohoo:

I visited the nest site on Wed. June 8th with my birding partner but did not see any eagles or eaglets in or near the nest :( The sky was very dark and the lighting was terrible but I did manage to capture one photo of the nest. It is possible an eaglet was lying down in the nest but due to the size of the eaglet in my previous photo, I think it would be a good size now. However, I will visit again soon.

On the way back from visiting 2 other nests in the general vicinity, and enjoying a snack at the Deep Cove Market, I spotted an adult perched at the top of the eagles' favourite perch tree, at the south corner of the property overlooking Pat Bay. Unfortunately I was in my birding partner's vehicle and there was nowhere to pull off the very busy West Saanich Rd. to take some photos

I visited the nest site on July 8th and did not see or hear any eagles in the area :( I did see a juvenile eagle perched in one of the trees overlooking the north beach area of Pat Bay, next to the First Nations reserve land. This area is one of Ma & Pa's perching areas. There is no way of knowing if this young eagle is one of Pa & Ma's offspring :luck:

Turkey Vultures perched behind the First Nations property at North Pat Bay July 8th. Very close to Ma & Pa's nest, but definitely not eaglets :D

July 14th cont'd.

After visiting 2 other nest sites in the area, I spotted one of the adults (looked like Ma) sitting in the nest as I was driving by. I parked down on the side road and walked back up the road to take a few pictures, hoping she would still be there. She was :rh:

This is the opening post for the 2022-2023 nesting season.

I visited the nest area on Nov. 14th. I did not see or hear any eagles around the Epicure property or down the road where the eagles often perch on my way past the nest. However, after I had visited the other nests in the area I spotted both eagles perched in separate trees along the path overlooking Pat Bay. I was lucky to see a space at the side of the road where I parked and took some photos of the eagles. It was late afternoon and the sun was very low and huge, setting over Pat Bay.

I visited the nest site with my birding partner on April 12th. We were very pleased to see an adult lying down in the nest; hopefully incubating eggs :luck:

The other adult was busy chasing intruders out of the area then landed in the perch tree behind the nest tree.

Apr. 12th cont'd.

The adults both flew off and circled overhead a few times. One returned to the nest while the other one headed towards the bay.
