Re: Pa Sidney Eagle Nest, Pat Bay, North Saanich BC - 2019/2020/2021 Seasons
I finally made it to see some of the nests on the Saanich Peninsula yesterday with my birding partner. When we first passed the nest site heading to the market up the road, both eagles were at the nest. When we went back we saw who looked like Pa in the nest, definitely incubating He started calling out and there was a Red-tailed Hawk and a very young eagle circling overhead. The hawk finally flew away and the young eagle perched in a tree on the farmer's property across the road from the snag nest. A while later Ma flew over the road and landed at the back of a tree near the fence but when we were able to get to a spot where we could see her she flew off before I could snap a photo She was in the nest helping Pa

When I arrived at the snag nest on Apr. 13th both eagles were in the nest.
Several minutes later one flew out and landed in a nearby tree.

This is the eagle in the nearby tree, squawking to the one in the nest.
I couldn't tell if he was feeding an eaglet or rolling eggs

I visited Ma & Pa's snag nest with my birding partner yesterday. An adult and a juvenile eagle were soaring over Pat Bay and an eagle was in the nest. We didn't actually see a feeding but the adult was fussing in the nest Hopefully it was an eaglet!

This sign was tied to the new fence at the entrance to the sub-divided Epicure property. The snag nest is visible in the distance.

I visited Pa's nest on Tuesday with my birding partner. I have to admit that I can't tell now who is who One adult was sitting on the side of the nest as we arrived at the driveway. It flew off right away then returned a few minutes later. It kept looking down into the nest but we did not see any fuzzy heads pop up or a feeding I'm hoping if there are eaglets in the nest they were napping

Re: Pa Sidney Eagle Nest, Pat Bay, North Saanich BC - 2019/2020/2021 Seasons
I visited the nest site on July 4th and sadly I didn't see or hear any eagles or eaglets in or around the nest site
Looks like the old camera finally fell off.
After I had been to see 2 other nests in the area I spotted both adults perched in different trees at the corner of the property across from the beach on my way back to Pat Bay. This one looks like Pa.
This one looks like Ma.

I went to the nest area on July 19th and saw Pa perched in a tree near the end of the property next to the First Nations Reserve land. He glanced at me a couple of times then flew to another tree on the property.
I took a photo of the nest from the south end of the property across from the beach.

I walked up the road and managed to get a photo of Pa in the 2nd tree which was quite far away.
I have not seen any action at the nest other than in the early months of this season. I noticed
that the old cam has disappeared from the branch on the right of the nest.
Their nest on Towner Park Rd. is still intact.

2021 Cam Maintenance
Matching Drive
Matching Drive
A little over 17 weeks ago, we met Tiku from our Surrey Reserve nest; this is just before he or maybe she made it all the way out of the shell:
And now Tiku and Tucca from Surrey Reserve and Hope and Chase from Delta 2 have all set out to explore the world.
We do still have one young eagle to watch - this is Romeo from our White Rock nest, who hatched 6 weeks later than Tiku:
At 11 weeks, he (or maybe she) is practicing perching on the nest supports and exercising those big wings. Eaglets generally fledge (take their first flight) between 10 and 14 weeks, and it's my guess that will happen in the next week or so.
And you know - I haven't really thought about this before - but our little window to access the nests and clean the cams and do any other necessary work isn't always that much longer than the 35-40 days it takes an egg to hatch. Last year the Surrey Reserve adults didn't leave until August 14 (though they weren't visiting very often after Thor left in mid-July) - and Dad Sur was back on September 26. Different pairs have different schedules - and it can vary from year to year - so it would be great if we could get ready now.
With that in mind....
We will be posting more details about our Adopt-a-Nest program, the new option to adopt one of our eagles with a tracker (details soon), the Monthly Donor program - and the work we need to do on the 10 cameras we now have at five different nests.
The important thing to know is that at least the first $1000 in donations toward our cam maintenance fund drive will be matched by long-time supporters of Hancock Wildlife - so the time to donate is now!

Sadly the eagles did not produce any young this season We wish them safe travels during their migration to the salmon spawning grounds in Alaska and look forward to their return to their nest area in the fall, looking healthy and well fed
