Saanichton Bay Eagles, Central Saanich BC - 2019-2024 Seasons

Unfortunately I was unable to return to the nest area to confirm both eaglets had fledged. Hoping they did and wishing them well during their travels to the salmon spawning grounds

I have locked this thread and will open a new thread when the eagles have returned to their nesting territory looking healthy and well fed

Good News!!

The eagles have been seen in their nest area by some of the nearby residents recently

This is the opening post for the 2021-2022 nesting season.

I have unlocked this thread to include the 2021-2022 nesting season. You are welcome to post your observations and photos if you see the eagles in their nest territory.

I visited the nest site on Oct. 13th but did not see or hear any eagles in the area. Their nest looks intact and ready for the eagles to start their nestorations. I took photos from various vantage points.

I visited the nest site with my birding partner on Apr. 28th. We saw the female in the nest feeding young. Although we didn't manage to capture any eaglets in any of our photos, one of the residents in the building beside the nest tree said there are 2 eaglets in the nest. That morning she heard the parent feeding the eaglets We heard the male chatting to the female but unfortunately it was at the time when we were down on the beach looking for him in all of the trees. We saw him circling overhead when we came up from the beach and the female was perched at the side of the nest.

The female was feeding the eaglets.

We noticed a huge black bag draped over the side of the nest

I visited the nest site with my birding partner on Wed. June 8th but sadly we did not see or hear any eagles or eaglets in or around the nest site We did not see any 'poop' around the nest tree or on the branches around the nest. We wandered up and down the paths and took some photos from various vantage points but unfortunately there were no neighbours to chat with.

This is the opening post for the 2022-2023 nesting season.

I visited the nest area on Monday Nov. 14th and saw one of the adult eagles perched in a tree near the edge
of the path, looking out over the bay. I took some photos of the nest and tree from different vantage points.

I visited the nest site with my birding partner on April 12th. We viewed the nest from many different vantage points. I was sure I saw something white (through my binoculars) behind the big branch on the left of the nest in the photo below, but was not quick enough to capture it in a photo

After walking along the trail down to the beach, we spotted an eagle perched at the top of a tree on the other side of the bay.

I was able to capture a photo of the eagle from the road across from the nest tree.

My birding partner visited the nest site of Tuesday of last week and reported no sightings of any eagles or eaglets in the area.

I visited the nest site on May 26th and did not see or hear any eagles or eaglets in the area. I chatted with a neighbour who said the eagles have been around, perching in a tree near her home a block away, sometimes 1 and other times both together. They do not seem to be nesting this season I took photos of the nest from a few different vantage points.

in the Saanichton Bay nest for the 2023/2024 nesting season.

My birding partner and I visited the nest site on Oct. 12th.

The nest is intact but we didn't notice any new sticks added.
This photo was taken from the path behind the nest tree.

One of the eagles was perched on the barge out in the bay.

The second eagle was perched in a tree along the shoreline, entering the estuary. The quality
of the photo is poor, due to the sun being behind the tree the eagle was perched in.

Oct. 12th cont'd.

I took photos of the nest from various vantage points around the site.

I visited the nest area on Mar. 10th with my birding partner and did not see or hear any eagles around the nest tree. We couldn't get a good enough view of the nest due to the dull dark weather

We walked down the path to the estuary and spotted an eagle perched at the top of a tree across the bay.

After leaving the nest area we spotted an eagle perched high in a tree at the corner of James Island Rd. and Arthur Dr.

I visited the nest area and the bay with my birding partner on April 9th. We did not see or hear any eagles in the area. We spoke to a few of the neighbours who said they haven't seen or heard them this season. We saw an eagle with a few Turkey Vultures flying towards the bay but it kept going towards the First Nations land. We are suspecting that this pair of eagles might own the 2 nests and take a few seasons off from each one; thus using the 2nd nest some seasons.

The big black plastic bag was flapping around the nest in the breeze.
