Willis Point Eagles, North Saanich, BC - 2019-2024 Seasons

Post by sassyk » Wed Sep 25, 2019 12:12 pm

Welcome to the Willis Point Eagles thread for the 2019-2024 seasons. This is an established nest that I viewed for the first time in April of 2018 and the only info I have is that it was built after the eagles' previous nest tree blew down. It is in the Tod Flats area of North Saanich, BC. There was 1 eaglet in this nest this past season, and it fledged successfully. Please feel welcome to post observations, photos and videos of this eagle family if you visit their nest area.

Observations and photos of these eagles for the past seasons can be viewed here and here.

There was no activity in or around the nest during the 2022-2023 nesting season.

I did a tour of the nests on the Saanich Peninsula yesterday. The nest is still intact, with the plastic sheet ripped to shreds and hanging from the nest.

This photo was taken from Willis Pt. Rd.

One of the eagles was perched near the nest tree.

I visited the nest area yesterday and was pleased to see an adult perched in a tree near the road. I did not see or hear anything in the nest and didn't see any new sticks in the nest. I stayed only long enough to take a couple of photos. All of that white plastic material has been hanging from the nest for a couple of years.

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, I have not been able to get out to check the activities of the eagles. Therefore this thread will be continuing to include observations, photos & videos of the eagles for the 2020/2021 nesting season. I am keeping my fingers crossed that the eagles will produce offspring this season :luck:

I hope to visit this nest soon.

I visited this nest site with my birding partner yesterday and spotted both eagles perched together at the top of one of their perch trees near the Red Barn Market on West Saanich Rd.

We were happy to see that the plastic has come off the nest :thumlft:

I visited the nest area on Apr. 13th and did not see or hear any eagles in the area. However, there could have been an eagle down in the nest incubating :luck:

I visited the nest site with my birding partner yesterday but sadly we did not see or hear anything in the nest.

However, we did see several adult eagles and a juvenile fly overhead, heading towards the landfill area.

2021 Cam Maintenance
Matching Drive

A little over 17 weeks ago, we met Tiku from our Surrey Reserve nest; this is just before he or maybe she made it all the way out of the shell:
Image

And now Tiku and Tucca from Surrey Reserve and Hope and Chase from Delta 2 have all set out to explore the world.

We do still have one young eagle to watch - this is Romeo from our White Rock nest, who hatched 6 weeks later than Tiku:
Image

At 11 weeks, he (or maybe she) is practicing perching on the nest supports and exercising those big wings. Eaglets generally fledge (take their first flight) between 10 and 14 weeks, and it's my guess that will happen in the next week or so.

And you know - I haven't really thought about this before - but our little window to access the nests and clean the cams and do any other necessary work isn't always that much longer than the 35-40 days it takes an egg to hatch. Last year the Surrey Reserve adults didn't leave until August 14 (though they weren't visiting very often after Thor left in mid-July) - and Dad Sur was back on September 26. Different pairs have different schedules - and it can vary from year to year - so it would be great if we could get ready now.

With that in mind....
Image

We will be posting more details about our Adopt-a-Nest program, the new option to adopt one of our eagles with a tracker (details soon), the Monthly Donor program - and the work we need to do on the 10 cameras we now have at five different nests.

The important thing to know is that at least the first $1000 in donations toward our cam maintenance fund drive will be matched by long-time supporters of Hancock Wildlife - so the time to donate is now!

The eagles did not produce any young this season :( We wish them safe travels during their migration to the salmon spawning grounds in Alaska and hope they return to their nest area in the fall, healthy and well fed :rh:

This is the opening post for the 2021-2022 nesting season.

I have unlocked this thread to include the 2021-2022 nesting season. You are welcome to post your observations and photos of the eagles if you visit their nesting territory.

I visited the nest area on Oct. 18th and was pleased to see an eagle perched down the road near Wallace Dr. It was quite foggy that morning so the photos are not the best quality.

The nest looked intact and a lot of the plastic has disappeared.

We discovered we could see the nest tree from quite far down Willis Pt. Road.

I visited some of the nests on the Saanich Peninsula with my birding partner on Apr. 13th. We did not see or hear any eagles in the vicinity of the nest tree. However, we did spot both eagles perched in separate trees way off in the distant trees along Wallace Dr. The weather was very dull that day and I could not capture any photos of the eagles that were worth posting

I visited the nest site with my birding partner on June 14th and we did not see or hear the eagles anywhere in the area. Our WiTS co-ordinator told us that the nest is not active this season. We went up and down the roads in the area looking for signs of a new or alternate nest but did not see anything. I took photos of the nest tree and photos of the nest from Willis Pt. Rd. and from Wallace Dr. There was no indication that the nest had been tended to.

This is the opening post for the Willis Point (Tod Flats) eagles for the 2023/2024 nesting season.

My birding partner and I visited the nest area on Oct. 18th and did not see either of the eagles near the nest site. The nest looks intact but we did not see any new sticks.
