Marmot Road Bald Eagle Nest, Sechelt BC 2018-2019 Season

Post by Marg » Sat Mar 16, 2019 3:29 pm

We first saw this nest in 2007 when HWF lunch Bunch group came to visit me. We visited my friends house where my friends viewed an eagles' nest from a skylight in their living room (Earl & I also saw this when we were visiting). While we were in the driveway looking at the tree one of the eagles returned from its summer holiday (right on the date it usually returned), we were all very thrilled to witness this. It seems that they didn't use that nest for a while they possibly went further into Porpoise Bay provincial park to build a new nest. I have been in touch with a friend who now lives in the house and she told me she has seen them for a few years. I have asked permission to post two pictures that she took and will post them when I receive them.

Unable to tell how many eaglets in recent years but the owner of the house has seen juvies around.

ADDED: We heard that they had a nest in the Provincial Park stim found the nest but there were no eaglets.

2018 - one eaglet was spotted and stim posted a picture which is in the next page.

Thank you for opening this thread once again Marg. I checked on our nest on Monday, April 1. I did not see nor hear any sign of eagles. Someone could have been in the nest though.
This pic was taken from lot 17 in the Provincial Park campground. The nest looks good.

On the way back into Sechelt I stopped at the spit at the end of Burnett Rd. From the distance I still could not identify a white head in the nest. :( No eagles seen perched in the nearby trees.

I was back here yesterday, visited at Lot 17, Marmot Rd and Burnett Spit. No eagles seen nor heard. I was shocked at the number of campers already taking advantage of our great campground here!
As seen from the campground.

From Marmot Rd. I think the nest is looking improved upon from last year from this angle.

From this distance away I expected to see a white head but not.

I don't know if the nest was used last year or not. On visiting Oct 3 I discovered it is gone, plastic hanging from the area where the nest was. The plastic is new to my viewing. A couple of young men camping on the lot beside the nest tree site had not seen nor heard any eagles. Marg will leave this thread as is as we try to determine what is happening this year.

Sandra, I sent my friend a message yesterday about the nest and she said that she heard the eagles and that after they leave a heron takes over the nest.

Today I saw her in the Mall and I asked her if there were any eaglets this past season she said that there were. Unable to say if there was one or more.

So the herons have babies in the eagle nest once the eagles leave? I've never heard of that but makes sense for a late heron lay. Will have to watch for that.
Good to hear there was success at the nest last season. I didn't get out much to check our nests this past year but hope to be more active again this year and won't give up on it. Thank you for the encouragement! :thumlft:

Finally back to check on this nest April 7. It is gone. I first stopped at the spit on the end of Burnett Rd. No nest seen in the nest tree from there. I did however see an eagle flying in and out among the trees along the beach line of the Provincial Park. I then stopped on Marmot Rd for a few photos and then into the nest site in the Provincial Park. Not eagles were seen while in there, no calling heard. One day I'd like to walk along the beach looking at the tree tops for a nest.
I'm sorry for this sad report Marg. I sense this nest was special for you, having shown it to the HWF group in 2006?
