Post by sassyk » Tue Sep 25, 2018 12:47 pm

Welcome to the Royal Roads Eagles thread for the 2018/2019 season. This nest is on the property of Royal Roads University in Colwood, BC. The eagles have produced many eaglets over the years with one successful fledgling this past season.

Please feel welcome to post your observations, photos and videos of these eagles when you visit their nest area.

You can find info and photos of these eagles from the previous season here.

I was at Esquimalt Lagoon today and spotted an adult eagle perched at the top of a tree a short distance below the nest :thumlft:

These photos were all taken from the lagoon. What I saw from there with my naked eye was a white dot. My lens was extended as far as it would go and the photos are cropped.

The nest tree.

Thanks Marg.

I went to Esquimalt Lagoon today and the nest site but didn't see or hear the eagles anywhere :(

I like to take photos of the nests I visit as the season progresses.

I went to Esquimalt Lagoon today and saw both eagles. They were soaring high over the lagoon then circled lower and landed in separate trees by the bridge end of the lagoon. One was still there when I left so I stopped to get a few closer photos which I will post later.

When I returned from the far end of the lagoon one eagle had flown off and the 2nd eagle was perched in a tree close to the road near the bridge. I took these photos from the small parking area just across the bridge.

I went to Esquimalt Lagoon today on my way home from Goldstream Park. Both eagles were perched in a tree near their nest tree. On my way back from the other end of the lagoon I saw one of the eagles perched in a tree across the lagoon near Hatley Castle. I'll post a few photos later.

A couple of photos of the eagles yesterday. Not the best lighting; too many dark clouds in the area.
This first one was near their nest tree.

I was at Esq. Lagoon today and saw one of the eagles perched in the same tree as in my above post. I didn't stop to take a photo because I was on my way to see the brown pelican. It looked like there was some new greenery in the nest; I'll post a photo later.

I spent some time at Esquimalt Lagoon yesterday. From the road in we saw an adult eagle perched in a tree near the entrance to Fort Rodd Hill. We saw both eagles soaring around the area of the nest which looks like it hasn't been fixed up. The eagles flew over the nest tree then landed in a nearby tree. One of them flew off over the ocean and returned a short time later, chasing an immature. The adult landed in a tree near the bridge and the immature flew past the nest area and towards Hatley Castle. It was a very dark sky, threatening to snow so the photos aren't good quality.

I checked on the eagles today; one was perched in a tree by the gate going into Royal Roads by the school and the other one called from the nest. That one wasn't visible in the nest from the road but I did see it from the lagoon.

I finally made it to the lagoon this morning where we decided to stay to view the nest. We had a very nice surprise; there were three eaglets perched on different branches in the nest tree, above the nest :woohoo: One of the eaglets on the branch in the middle flapped up to a higher branch, then up to the top of the tree :thumlft: We spotted one adult perched on a snag below the nest tree and the other adult was perched in a tree over by the bridge.

My fellow WiTS monitor was advised of another nest in the general vicinity of the Royal Roads property, off Heatherbell Rd. There were two eaglets in the nest at that time and they were already branching. We went to check on the eaglets today and they have fledged already. We saw one of the adults flying over the trees in the distance and were sure we heard an eaglet. I saw a dark blob in a nearby tree but we weren’t sure if it was an eaglet. I will be going back to the site tomorrow and hopefully will see an eagle or eaglet :luck:

This is another nest in the general vicinity of Royal Roads that my fellow WiTS volunteer was shown a couple of weeks ago. She was informed there were 2 eaglets that successfully fledged from this nest this season. By the time we got there the eaglets were out and about and we did not see either of them.

I visited the nest area yesterday and saw all 3 eaglets out and about in the surrounding trees. They were all squawking and I think they must have been calling for food. We didn't see either of the adults anywhere in the area. We never used to have a clear view of the nest tree so I think there must have been some trees blown down in a wind storm.

I was at Esquimalt Lagoon yesterday and took a few photos of the eagle nest tree. I did not see or hear the adults but did hear an eaglet calling once. I think one of the 3 eaglets was lying down in the nest. I caught a glimpse of movement using my binoculars but didn't catch it in a photo. The eagles will need to do a lot of renovating of their nest before using it next season, as it is much lower on one side.
