I have received a reply from the Supervisor of Parks Operations regarding the situation there at the eagles nest yesterday. It is very sad news indeed :cry1: A neighbour contacted them this past Monday to say they could see the eaglets in the nest through their spotting scope but there was no movement from either eaglet. Parks staff met with Biologists from the Ministry on Wed. to discuss the situation. Parks applied for and received a permit to climb an adjacent taller tree to get a closeup look into the nest. Yesterday morning staff climbed up and sadly identified that the chicks had died. Parks Technical Field Arborists then climbed up to recover the the eaglets from the nest. The eaglets' remains were then taken to the Ministry for examination. One of the adult eagles has been observed at the nest in the past few days. I have asked the Supervisor if he will kindly pass along any information he receives from the Ministry regarding the cause of the eaglets' deaths :( I will post any additional info I receive.
Thanks Kay  and thanks Philjo for your Pm .. This is very sad situation :cry1: ... hope you get some answers Kay !

What sad news - some days it's not easy being an eagle - or a person who cares about them. :grhug:

I have been watching the nest on and off during the day for the last week and have seen no sign of the adults.

Thanks so much for your info Paul :) I will be sending an email to Rob soon with any additional comments on the activities of the adults since the day they removed the eaglets from the nest; he asked me before he went on vacation.

Thoughts on the cause of death of the eaglets: given the number of rats we have it does seem logical that rat poison is the culprit. If so, could the adults have succumbed as well?
You mention aspergillosis. In humans it usually occurs in people who are immunocompromised. Is this the same for birds? If so it would seem strange that they appeared to be active and growing and then died rapidly.

I have been looking on the web for info on Aspergillosis and found this site which provides a lot of info. https://www.northeastwildlife.org/disease/aspergillosis

The Cornell Lab of Ornithology site also provides a lot of info on rat poisoning in raptors.
https://www.allaboutbirds.org/raptors-and-rat-poison/

I have read many stories of adults dying from ingesting prey containing rat poison. So it definitely could be the cause of the deaths of the eaglets.

Thanks for reporting on your above post that an adult is sitting in the nest :luck:

I'm still planning to get over to the park soon; however, life gets in the way :%:

Great to see one adult was seen yesterday in the nest !
:luck: for the second one :luck:
If it can help
at Decorah 2 eaglets are in a rehab center (cause by black flies infestation) for more than a month now (5th and 8th of june). Since that the parents were nos seen in or around the nest…
At Decorah Nest the lone eaglet also in the rehab center for the same cause and at almost the same date (7th of June). Dad was seen around the 25th of june and Mom, was just seen yesterday almost a month later.
so it's good if one adult is already there :luck:

Hi Philjo, thanks for the info :thumlft: Yes, there have been some scary situations at a lot of nests this season and I hope all the eagles in rehab are improving and will be released back into the wild :luck:
