Chapman Nest

Welcome to the 2017/2018 Season!

The Chapman nest is located on Highway 101.

Welcome to this thread. Please stop by and say "Hi" if you visit the Chapman nest you are welcome to post comments and pictures here.

We see these eagles fly over our house and head down to the nest which isn't far from the water. We have walked along the rocky beach to view this nest but we also saw it from the Highway which is much easier!

2011, 2012 and 2013 unable to confirm if there were any eaglets
2014 - 2 eaglets fledged
2015 - 2 eaglets fledged
2016 - we believe one eaglet was at this nest this season
2017 - one eaglet believed to have fledged

We saw a turkey vulture a couple of times flying around in this area but yesterday we saw 2 Sitting eagle flying in an updraft perhaps it was Ma/Pa Chapman? The eagles will be returning soon.

One of our sons was hiking in the trails behind our house a week ago and he reported that a pair of eagles flew overhead.

stim reported:Driving home from Sechelt today a bald eagle with very large wing span flew in front of me out from the trees on my right just before Havies Rd and up the incline in a line that I could envision going over your house Marg. It would have been maybe around 2:00 pm. I immediately thought it could be 1 of the Chapman couple

It probably was Sandra, we see eagles almost daily flying over and also down to Chapman nest in the a.m. or back in the p.m. Earl counted 9 eagles soaring when we looked through the living room window a few days ago.

Earl saw our friend who sees the Chapman nest from his property yesterday. Jack said that he has seen Ma & Pa Chapman and also a juvie they seem to be eating a lot of birds lately, maybe there is a shortage of fish?

We often see the Chapman Ma/Pa fly over our house down to their nest and in the evening fly back from their perch tree in the woods at the top of our road or beyond.
We saw them this morning. :)

Good morning everyone!
This morning we looked out and saw an eagle in the tree that the Chapman eagles often perch in. Added: Taken through our telescope.

I've noticed a change in perch trees Marg. The one that Heather and I had noticed an eagle in a lot last year, in a tree on private property as you go up the hill out of Davis Bay toward Sechelt, has been empty for me any time we've passed by there. Just a thought of a possible new mate? :dunno: It always looked like a male to me.

The Chapman nest is on private property up the hill on the left, is that perch tree that you and Heather have seen close to that location? I will have to look up the house number (in the archives).

I saw a male eagle perched in the tree in question yesterday. One sighting only so far. The tree is near the bottom of the hill, where the houses start on the west side of Davis Bay. But there was a male eagle perched there so perhaps Pa is still around.

I saw my friend recently who lives 2 houses from the nest tree and he doesn't think that there are any eaglets but :dunno: . He sees eagles feeding at the beach etc. I have contacted another friend who may know. :luck:

Added: I heard from somebody else that lives nearby and he believes that there's an eaglet in the nest. He said they are around the area more often right now.

Thats good news Marg! This is one of the hardest nests to follow so its great that you are in touch with some neighbours of the eagles. And that there is an eaglet :)

Hi everyone.

I got this message from Ian Pipes Bolden who lives near the Chapman nest Ian gave me permission to post this for him, when he sends the pictures I will post them. :)

Hello Marg!
With my busy schedule of late I hadn't had time to try to see the eagles nest ... BUT... today the pair flew by Beachside making a lot of chirping then circled right through the yard which was somewhat less usual behaviour. They circled back again and this time they were accompanied by a raggedy looking juvenile which was obviously WITH them and not being chased off. I thought that this was likely a fledgling.
Shortly after that I went out paddling my outrigger in Davis Bay and as I finished my session noticed an eagle on the swim float towards Sechelt eating a salmon and looking rather soggy after it had obviously taken a dunk in the ocean. It was very reluctant to fly away so I had a brief chat with it (it squawked back!) and left it in peace and went off to do one more loop in the waves. It was then that the second eagle and the scruffy juvenile circled over again, landing in a tree near the swim float. Shortly after getting back to shore the second mature eagle joined the first on the swim float and they appeared to share the fish. The second eagle then flew back up into the tree where the young one was. Lots of chirping!
I managed to take a few photos of the 2 on the float but haven't been able to catch the young one yet. I am keeping watch and will try to get pics.
Sorry for the long story. Wanted to let you know and share the experience.

5:34PM

Small update... fledgling very cooperatively sitting in our trees! Parents are close by... I can hear them. I looked up the colouration to be certain because there's a lot of white but not like an adult... I learned something new today!

I told Ian that It may be a 2yr old juvie but we'll wait for a picture. :dunno:

How exciting! Waiting in anticipation here of determination whether Ian witnessed a fledgling or older eaglet. :woohoo:

On passing through Davis Bay yesterday I spotted a male eagle in a well used perch tree near the houses as we begin to climb the hill, going west. Once spotted it was impossible to stop to have a look for a youngster as well.

Sandra, I believe there was 1 eaglet here this year but because it is a very dangerous place to look (Highway 101) I haven't been there and cannot walk on the rocky beach now. I believe Ian has seen one.

I saw an eagle flying near the beach close to the Chapman Nest around 9:20a.m. today.
I don't believe it was a mature eagle.
