Reay Creek Eagles, North Saanich BC - 2017/2018 Season

Post by sassyk » Sun Feb 25, 2018 6:33 pm

Welcome to the Reay Creek Eagles thread (formerly Victoria Airport Eagles) for the 2017/2018 season. The property the nest tree is on is in a development area and was not accessible this past season. However, I have heard from a WiTS volunteer that this pair of eagles successfully fledged 2 eaglets this past season. The road to the development is now open and I was able to access the nest area on Feb. 8th. The nest is in a Cottonwood tree close to the Pat Bay Highway and is viewable from the end of Deerbrush Crescent in the development. Reay Creek runs along the back of the subdivision near Peter Grant Park, under the Pat Bay Highway and out into the ocean just past the McTavish Road roundabout.

The eagles have a second nest on private property on Lochside Drive, across the Pat Bay Highway. They have successfully fledged several eaglets from that nest. It is believed that these eagles took over a Red-tailed Hawk nest near the entrance to the Victoria International Airport in 2011 and produced at least 2 eaglets in that nest. Photos of that nest are posted on the 2011-2013 Season thread in the old forum here.

I visited this nest yesterday and took this first photo from Lochside Drive near the round-about.

One of the adults was perched in a nearby tree on Lochside Drive overlooking the water.

When we got to the nest site one of the eagles was in the nest incubating. Just as I was getting out of the car she got up to roll the eggs then settled down again. All I got in the photo was a few of her back feathers.

I visited the nest area with a friend yesterday and now that the tree is in full foliage, we had a hard time finding the nest  One of the eagles flew from the nest tree, around the creek, between the new houses being built and down the street. There were 2 construction workers who were startled when the eagle flew past so close to them. The eagle flew back to the nest area and perched in the big tree behind the creek. We managed to confirm at least one eaglet in the nest; hopefully next time we'll have better luck.

This is why we had a hard time finding the nest!

Dad is a very handsome eagle!

There is at least one eaglet and perhaps two partially visible in this photo.

I visited the nest area yesterday and we were pleased to see the trail over the creek behind the new houses is open. We were able to view part of the nest and one of the eaglets was up on a branch above the nest half hidden by the leaves on the cottonwood tree. The other eaglet was barely visible behind the main branch. We were getting ready to leave when we saw an adult flying in with some prey in its talons. Back we went to the trail and were able to see the back half of the adult and part of an eaglet eating. This nest is very difficult to see.
