Sorry, I have no idea how the woman knows Sandra, she was walking by and saw me taking pictures so stopped and told me they had been sitting on eggs for two weeks. I couldn't see a head in the nest from where I was though. I didn't ask her how she knew, had just finished with a group of people walking by where one man told me that the eagles probably liked that everything was cleared from around the tree so that they could see the rats and mice better . . . . when I mentioned that eagles don't normally hunt rats and mice his reply was 'they eat anything' along with a few others things that were incorrect about eagles, he wasn't interesting in learning anything

Being curious about this nest and whether it was being used I stopped by again today around 4:45 pm, but this time parked on 9th Street to view the nest from the other side. I have to say that from this side the nest looks even more unstable and thought that maybe it had been abandoned halfway through construction. The whole shape just doesn't look right.
But while I was taking pictures, I saw movement in the nest. And the last thing I expected to see, an adult eagle appeared! Looked around, moved around a little and appeared to be doing something in the nest and then settled back down into the nest. This was honestly not something I had expected to see after seeing the construction of the nest and all the air space below it. It does appear that the woman was right and there are possibly eggs in the nest.

I spoke with Gord who lives right by the nest today on the phone. He hadn't checked it yet after yesterday's horrific wind storm, would call if it succumbed. I haven't heard back from him.
Apparently herons have built a nest very close to the eagles. We'll have to watch for it now too!

Gord just emailed that the eagle nest looks good after the wind storm.

Thanks Sandra and Karen for the updates. I'm so glad to hear that this pair seem to be happy enough to use their old nest. Thats such good news!!!

My friend who lives above the nest on Grandview reported to me yesterday that the eagles are nesting. I told her I wanted to share that news here! She thinks they've been doing so for about a week which would make it somewhere around the 25th of March.
The woman you talked with Karen had their brooding starting more like the second week of March.
It takes about 35 days to hatch.

A District mtg held this month heard a few neighbours of this nest report that nesting is happening. I got these photos during May, not hearing nor seeing any eagles.

I stopped by there today and viewed the nest from the bottom of Mabel and didn't see any eagle activity either Sandra, either in the nest or surrounding trees. But may have just been time of day, was around 4:45 pm.

2021 Cam Maintenance
Matching Drive
Matching Drive
A little over 17 weeks ago, we met Tiku from our Surrey Reserve nest; this is just before he or maybe she made it all the way out of the shell:
And now Tiku and Tucca from Surrey Reserve and Hope and Chase from Delta 2 have all set out to explore the world.
We do still have one young eagle to watch - this is Romeo from our White Rock nest, who hatched 6 weeks later than Tiku:
At 11 weeks, he (or maybe she) is practicing perching on the nest supports and exercising those big wings. Eaglets generally fledge (take their first flight) between 10 and 14 weeks, and it's my guess that will happen in the next week or so.
And you know - I haven't really thought about this before - but our little window to access the nests and clean the cams and do any other necessary work isn't always that much longer than the 35-40 days it takes an egg to hatch. Last year the Surrey Reserve adults didn't leave until August 14 (though they weren't visiting very often after Thor left in mid-July) - and Dad Sur was back on September 26. Different pairs have different schedules - and it can vary from year to year - so it would be great if we could get ready now.
With that in mind....
We will be posting more details about our Adopt-a-Nest program, the new option to adopt one of our eagles with a tracker (details soon), the Monthly Donor program - and the work we need to do on the 10 cameras we now have at five different nests.
The important thing to know is that at least the first $1000 in donations toward our cam maintenance fund drive will be matched by long-time supporters of Hancock Wildlife - so the time to donate is now!

The man who built his house much too close to our old nest tree was told mitigation was in order and that the old nest tree needed to come down for safety. David H came over twice, first to talk with the man, to visit the nests on either side of this territory and to choose a mitigation nest tree.
I drove him around the area, showed him the 2 nests which a friend and I also monitor. He didn't want our eagles here to move too close to either of the other 2 nests so chose a healthy looking tree very close to the old nest tree to build in. It has been a favourite perch tree for them through the years. Apparently the old nest tree had been in use for about 27 years.
On Sept 8 David returned with a trailer full of various sized branches he wanted to use to build the nest, a tree climber, Jacob, and Mike, who has helped him various times before now. The man whose property the old nest tree was on had a crane with lift waiting when we got there.
David and Mike going up with the biggest branches. David and Jacob at work. I love how Jacob found the perfect branch to perch on and work. David and Mike with some chain link for the bottom of the nest. Mike passing a branch to Jacob. Up again with smaller branches. Hard at work, still on his perch. Framing taking shape. And more branches. This is when my camera battery died so I will return soon for shots of the finished nest starter for our eagle couple.

I got back to the nest site yesterday Sept 29 and this is the finished nest starter kit. The neighbour from whose deck we were invited to take the photo thinks it has the best visibility of the nest. Nice! Thank you Gordon! He has not heard nor seen any eagles return yet.

Local eagles are returning to their territories after fishing north of here. This looks like a good time to open the new thread for 2022. Hoping our eagles like their gift of a new nest starter from David Hancock!
