Red-Tailed Hawks

Post by JudyB » Wed Jan 27, 2021 3:38 pm

This is a place to post any general information about red-tailed hawks, or to let us know if you've found a new cam or a local nest you're observing and would like a thread set up. You're also welcome to post about a cam or a local nest here, and we'll be to set up threads for specific nests later if there's interest over time.

Thanks to SueD for suggesting this thread!

Thanks for bringing that here, PeconicBay - very interesting! Please let me know if you and/or anyone else would like this moved to a separate thread - if not, it's fine to leave it in the general thread and post here when you have a chance.

I got a couple of pictures of Angel and Tom from the dvr, since I know very little about red-tailed hawks, including what exactly a non-leucistic one looks like; these aren't in any particular order.

You are most welcome, JudyB. I first saw Angel and her old mate (Mohawk) 2 years ago. They had 3 Red Tail hawklets (all normal plummage) and all 3 fledged. It was a wonderful experience to observe. Hope this season will be equally enjoyable!

Tom (short for Tomahawk), who is a new time dad, incubates the egg for the first time.

I just came across this thread and didn't know it existed and I have been following Angel the Leucistic Red Tail Hawk, Tom, and Deyani so here is a short season review.

* This cam is hosted by Window To Wildlife

Last year no eggs were laid as Angel and Tom got to know each better but this year two eggs were produced by these two

Egg #1 Laid March 24, 2023
Egg #2 Laid March 27, 2023

#1 Egg - Hatched April 29, 2023
The first egg hatched on April 29th, 2023 but unfortunately, Tom being a first-time Dad didn't know that the chick in the nest was his and not a threat and killed it.

#2 - Hatched April 30, 2023
The second hatch Tom was not allowed around for some time as Angel guarded this one and would not leave the nest. Tom did eventually figure it all out and did his job as a provider for RTH5 which was named (in polling) Deyani.
