Random Owl Nests and News

Post by gemini » Wed Mar 28, 2018 3:01 am

This is a place to post any general information about owls, or to let us know if you've found a new cam or a local nest you're observing and would like a thread set up.

Here's a cropped and color-enhanced photo of the same snowy owl, just a different photo in the series. I discovered I can't use GIMP (https://www.gimp.org/), my usual photo-enhancement software, to reduce the file size of my photos and then post them here (though, oddly enough, I can use GIMP to post my screenshots). But if I use Microsoft Photo or Paint, this site accepts my photos. A real head-scratcher, for sure!

I don't know if you heard about the Pot Plant Owl Family from South Africa , Johannesburg. (Merci Pascale to let me know..)

All the family 2 adults, 2 owlets were confronted with "Trichomonas" after they ate an infected dove.

Doves and pidgeons are killing the urban owls

Tragically, this in one of the last videos of the 'Adopted' chicks. Taken on 30 Dec. They are feeding on a Laughing Dove that has been brought to them by Lady, the female. The dove was infected with a deadly disease. One of the chicks succumbed on 3 Jan, the other is currently fighting for its life at a specialist Avian Vet. Lady has not been seen for 5 days
posting.php?mode=reply&f=39&t=219

Jan 3rd, the two owlets were at the veterinary to be treated against trich.
Jan 4th the first one died
Jan 6th the second chicks died (Dad was seen in a tree with already a closed eye. so infected too.)
They are trying to capture at least Pappa but not done yet and no signs yet of Lady

Hi Philjo56France

Thanks for posting this information here. I have been following the Pot Plant Owls for a few years. However, I haven't posted any s'caps this season due to the time difference. It was a heart warming story with a tragic ending :cry1:

One of our long-time members (MaryF) had created a dedicated thread on the old forum but it doesn't seems to be accessible right now. The thread was created on this new forum but I didn't have the permissions to post on it. I could have requested permission but I am kept busy with so many other threads on the forum. I hope Pappa survives and finds a new mate. My heart goes out to Tracy and Allan; they are devasted :cry1:

Here are a few s'caps of Lady and the owlets, taken Dec. 16th.

you're welcome Sassyk, yes this is a so sad end for almost all a family. I can imagine the distress of all who followed this specific pot plant nest … Pappa, Tracy and Allan must be very strong now !!
Thanks for your beautiful pics too. :huggie:
