Monday 12th at 17:40: Second Osprey Chick LR2 Fledges and Gains Confidence - Loch of the Lowes osprey webcam (2021)...

After watching his bigger sister fledge a few days before, our second osprey chick LR2 took to the skies on Monday evening, after some gusty wind took his hovering effort even higher than usual and away from the nest.

He recovered well, managing to land with excited chirps back onto the nest next to his mother and sister.

His confidence increasing with every flight, the next morning LR2 did a beautiful circuit of the nest and landed (almost) text book style next his mother, NC0.

It is incredible to think in around a month's time these chicks will be making their first solo migration south.

They sure do grow up fast!

2021 Cam Maintenance
Matching Drive

A little over 17 weeks ago, we met Tiku from our Surrey Reserve nest; this is just before he or maybe she made it all the way out of the shell:
Image

And now Tiku and Tucca from Surrey Reserve and Hope and Chase from Delta 2 have all set out to explore the world.

We do still have one young eagle to watch - this is Romeo from our White Rock nest, who hatched 6 weeks later than Tiku:
Image

At 11 weeks, he (or maybe she) is practicing perching on the nest supports and exercising those big wings. Eaglets generally fledge (take their first flight) between 10 and 14 weeks, and it's my guess that will happen in the next week or so.

And you know - I haven't really thought about this before - but our little window to access the nests and clean the cams and do any other necessary work isn't always that much longer than the 35-40 days it takes an egg to hatch. Last year the Surrey Reserve adults didn't leave until August 14 (though they weren't visiting very often after Thor left in mid-July) - and Dad Sur was back on September 26. Different pairs have different schedules - and it can vary from year to year - so it would be great if we could get ready now.

With that in mind....
Image

We will be posting more details about our Adopt-a-Nest program, the new option to adopt one of our eagles with a tracker (details soon), the Monthly Donor program - and the work we need to do on the 10 cameras we now have at five different nests.

The important thing to know is that at least the first $1000 in donations toward our cam maintenance fund drive will be matched by long-time supporters of Hancock Wildlife - so the time to donate is now!

When will NC0 leave?

Image

Image

It’s getting to that time of year when we start to speculate about the departure date of NC0 our resident female osprey.

Since LR1 and LR2 fledged a few weeks ago, NC0 has been spending less and less time on the lochside. Instead choosing to travel around, possibly even fishing for herself. The chicks have been spending less and less time on the web camera but are spending most of their time on the split birch opposite the hides and splashing in the water. For NC0 the hard work is done and she is building her strength to make her return journey south, possibly to West Africa.

LM12 is still providing fish for LR1 and LR2. Both chicks have mastered the art of begging for more food. Fortunately for us they still associate the nest with fish deliveries so those of you watching the webcam are still getting to see them.

So the question is when will NC0 leave Loch of the Lowes? We’re not quite sure as we didn’t observe her exact departure date last summer due to the webcam nest being unoccupied. From observations by the ranger team an estimated date of 3rd August was recorded. However as we can see from LF15’s departure dates there can be a lot of variation.

2015 – 7th August
2016 – 13th August
2017 – 5th August
2018 – 8th August
2019 – 28th July

NC0 was reportedly seen yesterday on the webcam but to my knowledge has not been seen yet today. Either way LR1, LR2 and LM12 will still be around for a few more weeks so if you would like to see them in person please remember to book a ticket online before you travel to avoid disappointment. Loch of the Lowes will continue to operate with pre booking, timeslots, enhanced cleaning and Test and Protect until 31st October.

2021 Cam Maintenance
Matching Drive
Hi everyone!

I've been thinking lately about how wonderful things can come in small packages - mighty eagles like these:
Image
arrived in little packages like this:
Image
(The adults are from French Creek, our newest nest, and the tiny chicks are Tiku and Tucca from Surrey Reserve being fed by Mom Res)

I'm also reminded of how small the window is for us to visit the nests and clean the cams while the eagles are away.

I have been focused on nest adoptions - but equally important are the smaller donations that may not be able to do that much all by themselves - but when they join with other donations, they can be mighty! I was outdoors yesterday during a fairly short but very powerful rainstorm - and it was amazing what all those little drops of water could do when they worked together!

We are only about halfway to our goal of $10,000 towards getting as many of our cams as possible cleaned this summer - and if everyone who reads this was able to donate $25 or $50 (or a bit more if possible) - I think we'd reach our goal.

Image

A big
Thank You!
to all who have donated,
and to our wonderful zoomer teams,
and to all who help in other ways,
posting observations, screenshots, videos, and so much more.

PS - Donations are still being matched - the first $1000 pledge was quickly matched, but I have not been doing a good job of reminding people that there was a second pledge of $500, and so far we've only matched half of that. So at least the next $250 in donations will be matched.

Please help us clean the cams before the eagles return.

Autumn comes near...
20 August 2021: LR1 & LR2 Lowes osprey juveniles 2021

In an unusual turn of events our eldest fledgling LR1 appears to have left Loch of the Lowes on migration before the resident female. LR1 was last seen on the webcam on Sunday 15 August at 20:20.

In our previous blog (When will NC0 leave?) we speculated about her departure date. Going by the dates set by our previous female LF15 we fully expected she’d have left by now. However, this is only NC0’s second year with us, and as we don’t know her habits and patterns of behaviour yet she’s still giving us surprises!

At the time of writing this blog, NC0 was last seen yesterday (Thursday 19 August) at 17:55. So we don’t think she’s left on migration just yet.

That is fascinating Ferenz...thank you. I wonder now if only one is here if she will stick around a bit longer to help the chick? We'll see...keep me posted.
