Hog Island Rachel, Steve and Bailey's nest
05-26-2020
After the last attack and for the second consecutive night, neither Lady nor Steve are brooding the 3 eggs. They will be back incubating at the first daylights but not enought time for the eggs.
So the season is almost finished for this nest now.
a sad one,
1st: Rachel didn't come back
2nd: 3 eggs left for Parents's safety
04h01
04h14 Steve or Lady just arrives

It is the second consecutive night that Phoebe (aka Lady) spent a big part of the night on her (non viable eggs, for me) after the last GHO attacks.
Tonight the GHO came back with the only aim to kill Phoebe.
Phoebe was strong enougth to leave

Phoebe wasn't seen yesterday, too scary for sure. Steve was on the eggs during daylight.

Re: Hog Island ME Osprey Cam 2018 + 2019
Season is over, Steve and Phoebe don't stay on their eggs now even during the day, one is in the nest, one was broken and another one is outside the bowl, part of the nest. After the owls attacks the 3 eggs was covered only during day time and so may be it's a luck no one hatched...
11h ago at around 14h00, Phoebe/Steve? came in the nest and then flew away

Phoebe seemed to be away many days ago,
Steve was last seen 09-08-2020 at 08h32. Pic from "Hog Island Osprey Nest" https://www.facebook.com/groups/1274877219274993 thanks to Laurie Cody They never rest in their nest during the night after the multiple owls attacks. They only came during day time until the last day they were present in the area.
Tonight around 20h/21h, again, the owls visited the nest, not a good message for the next season

At 15h35 Steve arrived !
Personal thoughts
Considering the way last season went, then the back season with these GHOs who have visited this nest so often, I was secretly hoping that Steve did not come back or even that the specialists decide to remove this nest from this island.
This is not the case so I only wish that Steve did not return at his peril because it was found that only Rachel was able to stand up against these GHOs with strength and courage.
But Rachel is no longer ... Rip sweetie.
Result, this early morning two GHO visited the nest, so sad already

2021 Season
Phoebe didn't come back, may be afraid by what happened to her and to her eggs last year with the GHO.
Many female were around Steve this year
It seems it choosed Callie, some matings but no eggs...

Steve and Callie may not be actively nesting this season, but they are definitely making sure that no-one else nests there, either! Happy to see Callie re-appear to help Steve defend the nest (THREE TIMES an interloper was chased off)!

At first they thought it was Callie and Steve.
Now they say this was an unknown female with Steve.

2021 Cam Maintenance
Matching Drive
Matching Drive
A little over 17 weeks ago, we met Tiku from our Surrey Reserve nest; this is just before he or maybe she made it all the way out of the shell:
And now Tiku and Tucca from Surrey Reserve and Hope and Chase from Delta 2 have all set out to explore the world.
We do still have one young eagle to watch - this is Romeo from our White Rock nest, who hatched 6 weeks later than Tiku:
At 11 weeks, he (or maybe she) is practicing perching on the nest supports and exercising those big wings. Eaglets generally fledge (take their first flight) between 10 and 14 weeks, and it's my guess that will happen in the next week or so.
And you know - I haven't really thought about this before - but our little window to access the nests and clean the cams and do any other necessary work isn't always that much longer than the 35-40 days it takes an egg to hatch. Last year the Surrey Reserve adults didn't leave until August 14 (though they weren't visiting very often after Thor left in mid-July) - and Dad Sur was back on September 26. Different pairs have different schedules - and it can vary from year to year - so it would be great if we could get ready now.
With that in mind....
We will be posting more details about our Adopt-a-Nest program, the new option to adopt one of our eagles with a tracker (details soon), the Monthly Donor program - and the work we need to do on the 10 cameras we now have at five different nests.
The important thing to know is that at least the first $1000 in donations toward our cam maintenance fund drive will be matched by long-time supporters of Hancock Wildlife - so the time to donate is now!
Details about How to Donate
