Bald eagle attacks Steve. Hog Island Ospreys. 18.46 / 28 May 2019
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jffc3zmlWw
Update from https://explore.org/livecams/ospreys/osprey-nest
First things first: We are still waiting for Steve's return. He, most probably, spent the night in his favorite roosting tree, nearby. On bad weather days he is always late on the nest, very often first seen in the afternoon. So stay positive: trust Nature, trust Osprey!
Well, yesterday, Bald eagles were dominating the action around Hog Island. At first, a juvenile visited the BH nest, leaving it in a mess.
Later, in the evening, Steve returned with a fish, but hesitated to deliver it directly to Rachel. He most probably was aware of the eagle, nearby. Keep in mind, that we heard eagles around all these days. When Steve finally was ready to settle on the eggs, the eagle approached the nest from below. Steve tried to fend it off. Both got entangled with each other and flew off the nest. After being separated, Steve flew smoothly off to the right, following the eagle, indicating that he is OK. Such fights are not unusual. They happen all the time, since eagles are opportunistic hunters, going after the prey ospreys and other raptors catch.
29 May. 11h06 am no sight on Steve yet

Thank you Philjo , I did see the attack and then Steve's return and I took these scaps , freeze framed them to get clearer view May 28
Steve sees Eagle and springs to the edge of nest Some have said he tripped but i think he purposely flipped over for defense In this scap I think the Eagle and Steve have locked talons

Not at all Heather, it's not my thread nor my video
About Steve in my mind i think Steve were trying to jump down as an escape versus the BE but not enougth quick, the BE has its speed for it and Steve was almost stopped.
I saw the same reaction in a video 3 years ago when youngs were caught by BE in this nest too, one was safe by jumping down from the nest, the poor one in the nest was not so lucky...

Hog Island Ospreys ~ A Great Horned Owl (GHO) Takes Osprey Chick From Nest w/ SLO MO! 7.25.19
Early this morning at 2:02 AM A Great Horned Owl flew in and grabs one of the osprey chicks and flies off with it. Rachel saw it coming but was unable to reach the nest in time to save her baby. I am very sorry to report another loss at this nest and deeply saddened. I believe the owl took the youngest chick - Dion. In regular time and slo mo. Thank you for watching!
