Due to the cam issues, we can't tell who fledged first. Schooner is 54 days old today, Skipjack 53 days, and Sloop 51 days. It is not necessarily the oldest who fledges first. Moreover, it is hard to tell the next fledge unless two chicks leave the nest at almost the same time or before one has returned from its flight.

Now, exciting weeks are ahead of them: practicing their flying skills, exploring the area, trying to catch fish on their own. We will enjoy their activities for 6 to 7 more weeks until they start their first migration to South America. Dory will be the first, mid- to end of August. Skiff will stay behind, providing the fledglings with fish and protecting them from predators or intruding ospreys. He will leave around the same time as the last fledgling heads south, too.

We had a situation, early this morning, but it was impossible to determine whether it was a second fledge, just another flight, or Dory leaving after the feeding...

Like every day for more than 1 and half month now Steeve is checking his old nest early in the morning
before he used to come with a fish for his female Callie the same as last year. It seems they choose again this season another nest far enought from the GHOs.

Permanent Osprey resident Bailey :rh: :rh: :rh:
had her annual exam this week! She was hooded to help keep her calm as she got her heart, feet, and wings checked. She also had a blood test to ensure she continues to be healthy. Everything checked out great and Raptor Care Assistant David noted her steady heartbeat and extremely strong grip strength! Bailey got lots of fish treats after her trip to the Clinic and is back in her exhibit. Come visit her at the Audubon Center for Birds of Prey.

Hog Island, Bremen, Maine, USA

around 00h00

At 46 do the young osplet "Skipper" alone in his nest and ready to sleep was killed and brought away by a gho
I'm so sorry for the guys who were following this nest
As i said in my mind, "the Spirit of Rachel was not around to say to Dory to rest near her littlle Skipper " as she knew how dangerous were the GHO in the area...

Now is coming the time for tears as it was the only osplet of the season in this nest...

For sensitive people, do not watch

Good morning everyone,
As many of you know, Skipper was predated last night Great Horned Owl. A little before 1am, a GHO landed on the nest and attacked Skipper, eventually flying off with him. This is an incredibly sad announcement to make, especially seeing as we were getting so close to Skipper's fledging.

I think this chat is a great space for everyone to lean on one another when things like this happen-- we can all take comfort in knowing what a gorgeous bird Skipper was and what awesome parents Dory and Skiff are. Unfortunately, predation from other birds is a part of an ospreys' life, as many of you saw on the Hog Island Nest in its heyday. Saying this doesn't make it any less devastating, of course.

Thank you to those who have already taken time to memorialize Skipper in words or in photos. I welcome everyone to do the same and to reach out if needed.

Skipper will be missed dearly by us all.
