2021 Cam Maintenance
Matching Drive
Hi everyone!

I've been thinking lately about how wonderful things can come in small packages - mighty eagles like these:
Image
arrived in little packages like this:
Image
(The adults are from French Creek, our newest nest, and the tiny chicks are Tiku and Tucca from Surrey Reserve being fed by Mom Res)

I'm also reminded of how small the window is for us to visit the nests and clean the cams while the eagles are away.

I have been focused on nest adoptions - but equally important are the smaller donations that may not be able to do that much all by themselves - but when they join with other donations, they can be mighty! I was outdoors yesterday during a fairly short but very powerful rainstorm - and it was amazing what all those little drops of water could do when they worked together!

We are only about halfway to our goal of $10,000 towards getting as many of our cams as possible cleaned this summer - and if everyone who reads this was able to donate $25 or $50 (or a bit more if possible) - I think we'd reach our goal.

Image

A big
Thank You!
to all who have donated,
and to our wonderful zoomer teams,
and to all who help in other ways,
posting observations, screenshots, videos, and so much more.

PS - Donations are still being matched - the first $1000 pledge was quickly matched, but I have not been doing a good job of reminding people that there was a second pledge of $500, and so far we've only matched half of that. So at least the next $250 in donations will be matched.

Please help us clean the cams before the eagles return.

This does not concern Hog Island but a more serious problem reported by the Washington Post. There is a whole chain of responsibility to denounce, responsible for a double death, two osprets paid for it with their lives and as with us in France everyone discards. Responsible but not guilty. For me all are guilty, but I'll let you make up your own mind. I would also like that there are resignations in chain in this kind of case. And also all of my bad thoughts for you, the guy or the vet who killed them when they weren't responsible or hurt. You deserve to lose your license for not having helped them live or survive instead. ...

The same from Annapolis Creative
https://www.annapoliscreative.com/publi ... -of-birds/

and here the officials said they didn't know the Osprey would be euthanized... "by the paper they signed"...
https://www.annapoliscreative.com/calve ... e-ospreys/

The worst, they can do the same with vulture chicks
https://www.annapoliscreative.com/two-v ... -aphis-ws/

After a tornado, one osprey found dead close to its nest, a second one euthanised because of its too severe injuries

Yuck, ignorance is not acceptable. We can be responsible for wildlife and be careful what we do.

Not tonight but the night before
GHO remembers where to find the "ghofeeder"... luckily, no eggs laid and nobody spent the night in the nest in 2021.

Last news and Great news about Steve

Question

After the two chicks, Big and Little, were taken by eagles in 2015, it was reported that Steve had been observed building a frustration nest on a pine tree on Hog Island. We were able to see the nest at the end of Long Cove when the boathouse camera zoomed in on that area, and we could observe that it was used for feedings after Bailey fledged from the Porthole Lodge nest. Has anyone on Hog Island observed any osprey activity in that area – possibly with Steve and Callie?

Thanks for the question! I'm about to share a new featured comment with an update on Steve, who is in fact nesting on Long Cove!
Here's a statement from our Senior Manager of Public Programs:
A few weeks ago Steve and his new mate started building a new nest farther down Long Cove on Hog Island. We have watched them build their nest and display courtship behavior. The Long Cove nest is a short walk from the previous camera operated nest and is marked on the attached map.

all is better than an empty nest who became a GHO's feeder too many seasons.
