Random Falcon Nests and News
This is a place to post any general information about falcons, or to let us know if you've found a new cam or a local nest you're observing and would like a thread set up. We'd also be happy to set up a thread for a species of falcon (like we did for Urban Merlins) if anyone is observing several nests and focusing more on the similarities and differences than separate observations of each nest.
As always, we'll be happy to set up threads for specific nests if there's interest over time.
Thanks to SueD for suggesting this thread!

And 3 eggs at Orange (Aus)
one small week to go
Box Cam, Falconcam Project

NEWS 2nd October.
Only 4 or 5 days until hatching begins! I think about 7th October, but that's only an estimate. Hopefully, we will have three healthy chicks, but it is often fewer than that, so don't be too disappointed if that happens.

NEWS 8th October.
The first egg hatched at or before 0456 h this morning. The chick has already been able to put up its head, so looks fine. First clear sighting is at 0701 h. Hopefully, we will have three healthy chicks over the next few hours or days, but it is often fewer than that, so don't be too disappointed if that happens.
You will be able to vote on a selection of names next week.
I'm fairly sure Izzi has left the area (last seen 10th August).

Great Spirit Bluff Falcons La Crescent, Minnesota,
Nest of Savanna and Newman
From the Chat
about the night 06-(11-12)-2023

Just to update:
Last night there was a Great Horned Owl around. Savanna apparently flew out a few times trying to defend. The last time the owl approached, Savanna flew out ahead of it, calling. As of now, Savanna has not been seen on the cams since then
We do not know what happened. We don't know what will happen going forward. We can hope for the best outcome possible for Savanna and the Eyasses.
Newman has been providing food for the Eyasses. The Eyasses are at or near the days when they would be expected to be in a fledge window.

Just after her flight and her characteristic cry a few seconds later, it seems to me that she has become a surprised and suffering prey... These cries will last a few more minutes then the ambient noises will take over. Her only chance is that, injured, she waits to recover to return to the nest or when, by misfortune, caught in the talons of the GHO, we hear her cry less and less loudly as she is taken to the GHO's nest.

A difficult few days at Great Spirit Bluff
June 13, 2023
Post from Raptor Resource
It’s been a difficult couple of days at Great Spirit Bluff. Falcon Savanna was attacked and likely killed by an owl on the morning of June 12. While we waited on tenterhooks for Newman to return, John looked for Savanna and we began talking about what to do if Newman was gone too. The little falcons turned 37 days old today and are just days – if that – from fledgling. It would be difficult to feed them without bumping them from the box, although we would have had to consider it if Newman didn’t return. Fortunately, he did! Newman has been busy provisioning Thomas, Alice, Kami. and Jayce, and guarding the box from owls or anything else that catches his eye.
Removing the young is not an option with Newman there, but he’s doing his very best to feed and protect he and Savanna’s young. We hope her bravery and fierceness at the end keeps the owl away for a few more days. She was an amazing falcon mother.
I’m not posting the final video – it’s just heartbreaking – but here’s a look at Newman and his family. It’s not easy to keep fledgling falcons fed, but Newman is doing a wonderful job.
