SE 30 UPDATE!

·
Exciting news release from NPWS about our SE30 and her adventures: Good news for a Sea Eagle Chick that fledged from its nest in Newington Nature Reserve mid October 2022 and was taken into care, after being found on the ground in a construction site.
Recently, SE30 was released back into the wild outside her neo-natal area. On release SE30 flew off very strongly and quickly joined another Sea Eagle, with both soaring in the sky.
Local National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) staff are keeping a watchful eye on its progress. Like its older sister SE27, SE30 has been fitted with a tracking device and has been banded to gather important information on the life of these amazing birds.
It takes a community to raise and rehabilitate birds of prey. The dedicated people who have been responsible for the care of SE30 over the past 6 months include the staff at Taronga Wildlife Hospital, Raptor Recovery Australia, Australian Raptor Care and Conservation Inc., WIRES, Wildlife ARC, NPWS and volunteers from Birdlife Australia.
The Sea Eagle Nest is monitored by EagleCAM operated by Birdlife Australia and has a world-wide following. Check it out here: https://www.sea-eaglecam.org/video.html

The female on the right has a distinctive lighter and mottled pattern on both shoulders (Lesser coverts). The male does not have these markings. These colourings are sometimes hard to see depending on the angle and the intensity of the light. Also, while these markings have been present up until 2019 they may change in the future with moulting. These are still visible today, 2021.

EagleCAM
May 30 Nestorations are well under way, with a good lining of green leaves in the nest bowl.
Since the beginning of April, Dad has brought 338 sticks or leafy branches and Lady 241.
Both have brought in large awkward sticks, which are hard to place just where they want.
Dad has brought in 15 prey offerings, mainly fish.
This week, there have been frequent matings each day.

:hi: SE egg 32·
June 20 Great news - we welcomed SE32 at 17:48 (as near as we could see). Lady was sitting on the first egg, she shuffled and huffed a little and we noticed the first sign of lay beginning at 17:44. Quick work with the egg first observed around 17:48. There was 75h17m between the 2 eggs. The eagles again used a strategy of delaying incubation, leaving the first egg uncovered for a considerable time initially, then increasing incubation as the second egg approached.

From RangerJudy @RangerJudy
2023
June 29: visitors last night – Ringtail Possums passing, and then around 7pm a rat, not a native species –strange to see it so high up. Lady alert and watching – the rat did not seem to be aware at first of the eagles at all.

Early morning, we noticed Dad appeared ill and was seen to have an injured right leg. He was unable to balance & fell twice. Lady as a result spent a very long time on the eggs today. In the middle of the day a couple of our team went into the forest to check if Dad was injured on the ground. We were delighted to see both of them fly over together, calling loudly. Dad did return to the nest twice in the afternoon later, to take incubation shifts.

At dark, Lady was on the eggs for the night & Dad in close by. We shall continue to watch & hope he continues to get stronger. We cannot intervene at this stage in any way.

Good report from Judy: :thumlft:

"RangerJudy @RangerJudy 17h
June 30: all seems to have settled with Life on the Nest. Last night, Lady incubated as normal, with Dad roosting nearby. It was a relief to hear early duets & to see him come in for his turn on the eggs at 6:33. During the morning then, shift changeovers as normal. Changeover at 14:20 – Lady had a full crop – good to see. Then later just after 3pm Dad brought in part of a fish then took it off to eat. Such a relief to see him in action again. He spent more time than Lady on the eggs today. As usual, the eggs were only left uncovered briefly. She settled in for the night at dusk, with Dad nearby somewhere."

July 27:Welcome SE31.
SE31 -hatched at 7:31 -was laid at 14:31 on June 17, calling that day 1, SE31 hatched on day 41 after pip was first seen the day before on June 26 at 14:18. So the hatch was fairly quick, taking around 17h13m since pip was first clearly seen. The chick had been working from inside the egg for some time earlier. Lady has eaten bits of the discarded shell and is keeping the tiny chick well covered. Cheeping and movement from that first chick will encourage our second to hatch.

and welcome to SE32 at last - - after struggling to get out of that tricky shell. Hatch took 30hours 22 minutes. Lady then returned to feed SE31 and then covered them both, rising to eat some of the shell membrane.

31st August, 2023 -
Following storms last night, our nest camera (including sound) is offline. We've tried all that we can, remotely and from the BirdLife offices.
Current situation unlikely to be resolved today. As soon as we have an update, we'll advise.
We are broadcasting our adjacent camera view on YouTube and Twitch. https://sea-eaglecam.org/video.html We may rotate our Twitch view throughout the day to our IR camera.
