"Did you know that Sydney Olympic park is 640 hectares (1581 acres), of which 430 hectares (1062 acres) are parklands. For comparison, Central Park in New York is 340 hectares (840 acres), Hyde Park in London is 142 hectares (350 acres).
The turpentine-ironbark forest where the eagles have their nest is 13 hectares (32 acres) - of dense woodland.
The surrounding estuarine wetland system is 34 hectares (84 acres).
None of this includes the river roost area where the eagles spend much of their daytime hours.
It is simply not possible for us to eyeball the entire area on a daily basis. Our cameras only cover a small fraction of the forest. Thanks to local ground observers, we know that SE24 is mainly at the river with his parents.
We have seen SE23 on camera twice and "in person" on another couple of occasions since fledge. He seems to be flying between the wetlands and the forest. We've had fledglings in the past not leave the confines of the forest or wetlands for over a month. This is a protected/fenced area not open to members of the public.
Parents will fly around with food, locate the young and feed them. Just because we have not observed SE23 being fed by his parents does not mean he is "starving".
The last time we had two fledglings, one was not sighted for nearly a month. During that time, there were numerous searches through the forest and around the wetlands with no sign of him. Sea-Eagles eat carrion eg. fallen nestlings, lizards, fish from the pond in the wetlands. Please - TRUST THE EAGLES!"
