What wonderful close-ups - thank you so much, Philjo!

The post below is focused on the expenses of our HWF cams - but we also need help with the monthly expenses of the forum - unlike some of the other forums I've visited, we're ad-free - and there is a price for that. Thank you all for making the forum great - and if you can also help financially, that would be wonderful.
.
Fall Matching Drive
Summary for Those in a Hurry

We need money to upgrade our internet system so all 10 (!) of our cams can stream smoothly and for ongoing maintenance and monthly expenses for the Harrison Mills cams (which are not sponsored and didn't get their own fund drive this year) - and and we have folks who have offered to match the first $1000 in donations to this drive!

The easiest way to donate is to
  • go to the "Donations" page on our website (https://hancockwildlife.org/donations/)
  • click the "Donate via CanadaHelps Now!" link
  • choose "Donate Now" or "Donate Monthly"
  • enter the amount of your donation ($250 to adopt a nest - or whatever you'd like to give)
  • pick a one of the options on the Fund list (the amounts for Eagle Cams/Repairs and for General Monthly Support are suggestions; the amount you put in the Amount box is what you'll donate
  • if you are adopting a nest, use the message box to say which nest you are adopting and how you would like your name to be listed - or you can use it for other messages to HWF
  • fill in your contact information and credit card details, and
  • click "Complete Donation Now"
Thanks to all who have donated, to the folks doing the matching drive, to those who watch and/or zoom the cams and post observations, and to those who help behind the scenes. And we really do need your help - if you can, please donate now.

Thank you.

.
The Rest of the Story

The leaves are changing color and falling from the trees, and the eagles are returning to their territories and doing some preliminary work on their nests (though there are still a whole lot of eagles feasting on salmon visible on our Harrison Mills cams!) - and Hancock Wildlife Foundation has been busy as well, and we need your help.

We had planned to have a fund drive to cover the costs of cleaning the cams at Harrison Mills - but we forgot to ask the eagles, and they were back earlier than expected. This is a new pair - the same male we watched this spring with a new female - so it's not surprising that they would follow a somewhat different schedule than Mr and Mrs Honeycomb, the original pair at Harrison Mills. So we aren't going to clean the cams - but do need donations to cover the monthly expenses at Harrison Mills and our other non-sponsored cams, so if you were thinking of adopting Harrison Mills, this would be a great time to do that!

We are also very pleased to announce our newest nest at Surrey Reserve (link to the cams)! There's a great story behind this nest in BC's first Eagle Reserve, established with support from Hancock Wildlife, developers and cam sponsors Dawson and Sawyer and the City of Surrey (full story here) and we are looking forward to getting to know the eagles who have been visiting the new nest built just for them! The picture below is their first observed visit to the nest on October 23, in the early morning before the cams switched to color.

But there is a catch - we now have 10 cameras - two each at Delta 2, Harrison Mills and Surrey Reserve, and four at White Rock - and our current internet connection is not fast enough to upload the signals from that many cameras. As always, our wonderful tech person is on top of this, and the newer, much faster internet connection will be installed on November 5 or 6 (we're borrowing a fast connection until then - that's why you can now see the new Surrey Reserve cams!). The new service will cost around $110/month - and it would be wonderful if we could get some more people to join our monthly donor program to cover that cost.

I put the basic information about donating at the beginning, but I will mention here that you don't need to be in Canada to use CanadaHelps - and for those in the US, the rate of exchange is currently in our favor, so the $250 Cdn needed to adopt a nest will show up as around $200 US dollars on your credit card. And a $25 Cdn monthly donation or one time donation is around $20 US. There are also several other ways to donate on our Donations page - and gemini ([email protected]) and I ([email protected]) will be happy to answer any questions (or try to find the answers if we don't know). If you are adopting a nest using a method other than CanadaHelps, please let me or gemini know which nest and how you'd like to be listed so we can get you added to the page and make sure your donation is added to the total for the matching drive.

Thank you again to those who have been supporting us over the years, financially and in so many other ways - we could not exist and be this great clearinghouse for information about eagles, osprey and other wildlife without your help!
