Hi DDuckies2, I followed the Melbourne falcons nest. 2/3 falconets died 2 weeks ago from the Trichomonas, like i'm sure two others one/2 last year… No chance alone in the wild. In fact i'm almost happy SE21 had this accident last Week so they can treat her now.

More questions and additional info :
"Se McGregor Alex Barley - Acies would you be able to answer some medical questions about trich? I know that everyone can google but you are much better informed.
Do you know if 21 will be forever protected following treatment? I heard that the protozoa only live for a short time - ie they have to be on a living host. Given the fact that not every bird that eats a pigeon (or other carrier) catches the infection, it would make sense that there is only limited time where infection can cross."

"Alex Barley Hi all,
The easiest way I can explain it is that trich is like athlete's foot, except in your mouth. It's as yucky as that sounds. Protozoans are quite sensitive and cannot survive outside a host's system for long, and we have effective meds for them. 21's case does not appear to be serious, and she is in good care, which gives her a great prognosis for recovery from this infection.
Regarding persisting cover: as this is an infection that is not a virus, 21 cannot be immunised against trich as a person cannot be immune to athlete's foot. Trichomonas is a tiny parasite, and you cannot immunize against parasites, only prevent or treat infections where they occur. Trich is not usually a dangerous infection. Provided 21 does not become otherwise immuno-compromised (very sick, plainly speaking) or the trich does not become strongly establish in her crop or airways, it is not a serious threat to her health.
Hope this is of some help and puts some at ease,
Here's to a swift recovery,
-Acies "

DDuckies !
Empty nest for the last 4 h by steps of 30', so sad for Lady and Dad… a last pic for today Few things about Tricomoniasis
https://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0,4570,7-3 ... vfByqpsOO4
"Clinical signs
Birds infected with T. gallinae display a variety of clinical signs. The birds are depressed, salivate excessively, are emaciated, appear listless, ruffled and dull, have difficulty closing their mouth, display repeated swallowing movements, exhibit open mouth and noisy breathing, have watery eyes, have difficulty eating and drinking, have difficulty standing or maintaining their balance, have diarrhea, may have a puffy appearance of the neck, exhibit a sunken and empty crop and have a fetid odor. Birds will usually die from starvation due to the blockage of the esophagus or from suffocation caused by blockage of the trachea by the caseous (cheese-like) necrotic masses in the mouth commonly seen with this disease."
Not only carried by pigeons but also by feral Starlings.
