Maintenance 2023

Post by JudyB » Wed Jul 12, 2023 7:40 am

Hi everyone! It's time to get a wish list together for cam maintenance so David Hancock and Myles can begin making plans for when the eagles head off for their late summer vacation so I've set up this thread to gather information for that.

I'll be trying to contact the zoomers for each cam - but please don't wait for me to contact you - if you have a suggestion or recommendation, please either post here, or send me a PM or email me ([email protected]).

Thanks!

Delta 2

David Hancock's comments: "With the Nest cams not actually pointing at anything meaningful, I would be prepared to purchase a 42x Mag cam to mount on our old tree and point at Tower across berry patch. Probably cost $3000 CAM + re-wiring again to that site + climber: $4,500.00. (Unless and perhaps we had to bring in 60 foot lift + wiring = $2,000 Total $5,000.00)

- Of course marvelous if the eagles came back. I did not think D2 without eagles was worth doing. Which CAM wiring has to be re-done.? The challenge here is we would have to access the CAM with a lift -- even this little 60 footer delivered is about #1,500.00.. add $500 to rewire,. Total: $2.000.00 (( NOTE: if we brought in lift to do additional CAM then it is there and we only – couple hundred dollars to include rewiring this nest. ))

JudyB's thoughts: I think a number of us would like to see what Delta Ma and her mate are doing, and if one of the towers we could see from the former nest tree is where they are nesting, it would be nice to have a camera there. Knowing that the former nest tree is dying, and branches have fallen off - is it safe for a climber? IF we'd need a lift for the proposed new cam for the tree, it makes sense to me that we also use it to fix the East cam which is almost brand new, and has a better view of several areas. Or we bring it down to use elsewhere.

Harrison Mills

David Hancock's comments: I am hoping to have two new cams here but haven't gotten this confirmed yet.

JudyB's thoughts: Last I knew, the eagles did not seem to be using the nest where the old cameras are; if they have a new nest, perhaps someone in the area knows where it is - and there is a lot of activity on the flats that would be interesting and educational to observe.

Surrey Reserve

David Hancock's comments: "Climb and clean each CAM; About $500.00 per climb.. This would equal $1,000.00. Do both CAMS need cleaning or just one?"

JudyB's opinion: I think both should be cleaned and have their wiring checked.

White Rock

Per David Hancock, no work is planned this year since the cams were cleaned last year.

On David's wish list - it would be nice if "we specifically raised $3000 for install of new CAM 42xMag + $500 for Climber + $500 to have it wired up to scan beach eagles hunting midshipman etc."

JudyB's comment - it would be nice, but I don't see that happening.

Other Cams

French Creek - I've seen pictures of a beautiful fledgling on the Save Estuary Land Society Facebook page and am asking permission to use them for a post on that thread; I also asked about the possibility of someone checking the cam later this summer during the window when it's legal to go up the tree, but don't expect that to happen.

David mentioned three other sites where he might be placing cameras, two on eagle nests and the third on a building where peregrine falcons may nest. I don't have a lot of information - but did want to mention that we may have one or two new nests to watch if one or more of those work out.
