As of July 12, we are having trouble embedding the North cam; for now, you may be able to watch on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srGxMe_FtCo - if that link doesn't work, try searching for Hancock Wildlife Foundation Live Stream on YouTube.

This Nest is in the Pacific Time Zone

WHITE ROCK BALD EAGLE CAM 2022-2023

This thread is for Discussion, Observations, Screenshots & Videos solely related to actions/events/ occurrences at the White Rock nest. When making your posts, please type the time first, then your observation of the activities. Although we tend to want to humanize our eagles, they are wild birds so please try to avoid the temptation to speak for them.

Posting Guidelines
Screenshots and photos and/or links to videos are welcome in this thread as part of the discussion. We welcome all screenshots and videos of the White Rock nest captured via the webcams. Screen captures are limited to three (3) per post and should be no more than 500 pixels wide. Please use the file tag (not the IMG tag) when attaching your captures. Also, make sure you save your captures in the JPEG format.

As a courtesy to viewers with slower internet connections, please limit the pictures in each post to no more than a total of 150,000 bytes. Please do not post animations (though it's fine to post a link to them). Please limit smilie/emoticons to three (3) per post. Also, some members have difficulty with moving smiley/emoticons so please limit those to one (1) per post (of the three (3)). Please remember this thread is solely for observation/discussion regarding the events in and around the nest area.

Thank you for your cooperation!

OUR CAMS:
We have three PTZ (pan/tilt/zoom) cameras for the White Rock territory:

The Closeup and Wide Angle are Vivotek cameras
The North camera is a HikVision camera
The Closeup and North cameras are now located on the 2016 nest tree

Watch all three LIVE HERE

Many thanks and appreciation to Russ Cmolik for making this possible.

Egg(s) Hatched: 1st hatch April 23, 4:45 pm; second hatch April 25, 5:51 am.

Eaglet(s) Named: confirmed that the tiny one's official name is Uniform and we are welcome to call him or her Uni for short; the second eaglet is named Victor, Vic for short; names are based on the aviation alphabet

First Branched:

Tech Info: Starting July 11, I can no longer embed the YouTube channel streams for the WR North cam and a similar cam at Delta; it's still possible to embed the stream, but that changes frequently, making more work for me, and making it harder for others to view the streams from those cams; I'm adding this here so I can find the info quickly in the future - link with details here

Fledged: Vic - July 12, 3:07 pm (78 days old); Uni - July 18, 8:57 am (91 days old)

Eaglet(s) Last Seen:
- on nest: August 6, 5:06 pm (105 and 103 days old)
- perched: August 6, 8:53 pm (eaglets were heard for a few more days, and there were sightings that might have been them)

Adults Last Seen:

- Mom, August 6, 7:05 am
- adult, August 6, 9:45 am

Cam Maintenance: No maintenance done on the cams in 2021.

2021-2022 Nesting Season
Adults Return:Sept 29 2021 6:49am Mom first spotted as she lands on OT.
Nest Work: Nest work on the peace tree (PT). They both worked hard. Good looking nest by the time 1st egg was laid.
Egg(s) Laid: Wed Mar 23, 2022 1:40 pm. We have an Egg! Not visible via cams . We do not know if a 2nd egg was laid however Mom's actions indicated she delayed incubation for 3 1/2 days at which time a 2nd egg would usually be laid and then she went into full time incubation.
Pip Seen: We won't be able to see a pip this year with no view of bowl. Should be around April 26-27?
Egg(s) Hatched: April 29, 2022 – the adults were sitting higher in the nest this morning, suggesting that they may have a chick. And there was a feeding at 4:16 pm – and it looked as if there may be two chicks! There’s a video of the feeding on the forum if you’d like a peek – viewtopic.php?f=14&t=589&start=2850#p572033.
Eaglet(s) Named: Sierra and Tango, following the aviation alphabet used here.
Sad News: June 14, 2022 – both eaglets died, probably of avian flu; they were 46 days old, and had seemed fine until a day or so before, and even then, there wasn’t anything that obvious given the obstructed view of the nest.
Adults Last Seen: Aug 1 both visited last years nest early morning.
Cam Maintenance: September 9, 2022 (link) - broken strap that had been holding the top part of the CU cam replaced; other straps on the CU and North cams checked, and some cleaning done to the domes of both, though there were some sticky spots that defied the cleaning cloths.

EARLY HISTORY

2009-2010 Nesting Season
The original nest tree we watched was only about 100 feet from the back porch of the man who generously provided the cameras, and the nest was about 120 feet up the tree. It was built in November 2009 after the pair's original nest, 500 yards south of this site, was disturbed by construction. The eagles successfully raised two chicks, named Alpha and Bravo by the landowner, at this new nest in 2010.

2010-2011 Nesting Season
In 2011, their first year on cam, the eagles laid two eggs, both of which hatched; the two eaglets, named Charlie and Delta, fledged successfully. The nest looked a little precarious by the end of the 2011 nesting season, so additional supports were added when the cams were cleaned in fall 2011.

2011-2012 Nesting Season
2012 was another good year for this pair, and eaglets Echo and Foxtrot ("Foxy") fledged successfully. Their nest was looking a bit precarious by the end of 2012, so when David Hancock installed additional PTZ cams, he made sure they would also provide a look at another tree that looked promising for a nest, and may have added a few branches to help them get started in case they decided to move.

2012-2013 Nesting Season
2013 was a hard year at White Rock; it appeared to many observers that a new, possibly young, pair took over the nest. They laid two eggs, but were not consistent about incubating them, and near the hatch date, a subadult landed while the adults were away and broke one of the eggs; David Hancock reviewed the video of the event, and said it looked as if the embryo had stopped developing at 10-12 days, probably from lack of incubation. The adults stopped caring for the remaining egg after that, and it was destroyed by a juvenile eagle a week or two later; it also appeared only minimally developed. In the fall of 2013, a pair of eagles was seen working on the nest, giving viewers hope for 2014.

2013-2014 Nesting Season
2014 was a much better year, though not without a bit of sorrow - we're not sure if the original pair returned, or if last year's pair matured, but the adults seemed very competent, and laid three eggs; about half way through the incubation period, we lost one of the eggs - it stuck to the adult's chest when he got up (perhaps already cracked?), and fell off as he moved to the side of the nest and bounced off the nest rails; it appeared intact, but it was soon obvious that one of the eggs was broken, and the female removed the pieces. The other eggs hatched successfully, and the chicks named Indy and Jules fledged successfully.

2014-2015 Nesting Season
All went well - two eggs were laid, and the chicks named Kilo and Lima fledged successfully - but about two weeks after they fledged, while they were still using the nest for food drops - the nest came down. We are very happy that both fledglings were old enough that they didn't need a nest!

2015-2016 Nesting Season
The eagles built a new nest for 2016, in a tree which was just barely visible from one of the cams; local observers reported when they seemed to be incubating - and reported that they appeared to be feeding chicks. The new nest fell down when the chicks were about 10 weeks old, and fortunately both chicks were able to cling to branches, and there was enough nest left that one at a time could lie down, at least initially. Observers reported that the adults were feeding them on the branches, and both seem to be doing well. The fledglings (who were not named) spent several weeks in the area, visiting the old nest tree and the human-built nest, so were eventually seen up close on the cams. Once the eagles had left, some supports were added to the new nest tree and cams were installed in preparation for 2017.
