If you watch around the 4:17pm time you will see a 2nd head pop up a few times. I zoomed in with computer and watched several times and for sure there are 2 eaglets. The movements of parents today indicated that a 2nd hatch was in progress. The first eaglet most likely hatched last evening or during the night.
1st scap 4:17pm I saw 2 heads. Mom feeding the further one and the nearer head pops up.
2nd scap seconds later again see 2 heads. The nearer eaglet falls or try's to bonk the further eaglet.

So pleasantly surprised we can actually see the little ones! Thought for sure we wouldn't be able to see them while so small.
Thanks for clarifying that, DDuckies! I went back and grabbed a video so we'd have a record before the dvr moves on. I'm thinking the nearer eaglet may be the younger and not yet steady on their feet, though it's hard to be sure. Great zooming to catch all that!

You're welcome - it was wonderful to see the tiny bobbles!

I'm still wondering a bit about the timing, so I looked back to the activity on the nest beginning around March 19-20. It looks as if there was some speculation that Mom might have been in labor around 11:25 am on March 20th - they had been mating before that, and she spent some time in the nest bowl. They didn't appear to do any incubating - but wouldn't do much as long as it was reasonably warm and they were delaying incubation; Mom slept perched beside the nest the night of the 20th and 21st. They were mating a lot on the 22nd, and Mom was laying on the nest as it got dark at 7:58 pm on March 22nd. Mom was either in or beside the nest as it got light on March 23rd.

It looked as if Mom laid an egg around 1:37 pm on March 23rd, and at 2 pm it looked as if she was turning an egg. After that, there may have been some occasional breaks, but it looked as if they were incubating fairly consistently. Observers were watching for another egg around the 26th and didn't see anything obvious, which is not surprising since Mom was on the nest anyway and the distance and branches make it challenging to see what she's doing at any given moment. It's also not impossible that she laid a third egg on the 26th (or 27th) if she indeed laid her first egg on the 20th.

So - except for one little incident that I'll get to in a minute, I think it's quite likely that she laid her first egg on the 20th, probably at 11:25 as Lynne suspected. Given how much the adults appeared to be incubating after March 23rd, if that was the first egg, I don't think the second egg could have caught up so they could hatch that close together. On the other hand, if the first egg had only minimal incubation until the night before the second one was laid, it would make perfect sense that they would hatch fairly close together. And they still weren't incubating constantly after the egg was laid on the 23rd, which may mean that there is a third egg that will hatch in a day or two. Or not. It sometimes takes even an established pair a bit of time to get into the rhythm of incubation.

The one thing that seems out of place in my scenario is that what appeared to be a young eagle came to the nest at 2:48 pm on March 20, and stayed there a minute or so, maybe laying down briefly, then flew off (link to 2Chuckit's video). The eagle left in a hurry - but I'm a bit surprised the adults let it stay for even a minute - though I also remember watching the Delta 2 eagles one year as they totally ignored their first egg, going about their business while I stressed out - so maybe it's not surprising that they weren't watching that closely.

Anyway - if the eggs were laid March 23 and 26, they hatched on Day 37 and Day 34; the original Harrison Mills pair started incubating full time as soon as the first egg was laid - and their eggs generally hatched in 36 days - 34 days is very unusual.

If the eggs were laid March 20 and March 23, they hatched on Day 40 (or maybe 39 if the hatch was before midnight) and Day 37. Looking back at other years here when chicks hatched close together (and also at Delta which also uses delayed incubation), the first egg is usually day 38-39, and the second day 36.

So - based solely on the math, I think the eggs were laid on March 20 and March 23, and if there is a third egg, it was probably laid on the 26th and might hatch late today, but tomorrow (which would be day 36) is more likely. :)

No way we'll know for sure this year - and with a bit of luck, we'll have an overhead cam again next year.

And with everything that is happening at our other nests - I am so happy to see little chicks here!
