Logging in to the CU cam to check last year's nest.

Hearing crows close to the cam, and there was an eagle who flew off. I'm out of the CU cam, am going to log into the WA quickly to check the higher branches of last year's nest tree.

Didn't see anyone - put both cams approximately where they were and am logged out.

I received some additional sad news from David Hancock. An eaglet at a nest near the one we watch fell from the nest yesterday; OWL came to pick it up, but unfortunately the young one did not survive the night. I don't know if the chick fell because it was ill, or if it was a slip while branching or something - and don't know the cause of death. Rest in peace, young neighbor eagle. :cry1: :grhug:

One of the adults is perched beside last year's nest, and while his (or maybe her?) left eye doesn't appear obviously injured, the adult does seem to be keeping it closed quite a bit - something I've noticed in one of them for a couple of days.

Here are some pictures, including extreme close-ups in case that helps you let us know which adult this is. Some are taken directly from the zoomer link - they are smaller but occasionally appear clearer.

The adult looks quite normal in the last s'cap - and flew off right afterwards.

I've put the CU cam back watching this year's nest and the tree beside it where they perch.

Dinner time here - I'll try to check back later, but lots to get done this evening.

Thanks, Lynne - that was my guess from the shape of the head and beak, but every eagle is a bit different, so I wasn't at all sure.

Hi Judy
After I read what you wrote about the eye I remembered from last year Harriet on SWFL had the same thing happening so I went and found the post and this is what was said about it:

Mar 24, 1:48 PM
Essec09 (Admin): Afternoon. Viewers may have noticed Harriet's bottom left eyelid shut this afternoon. The eyelid has opened every once in a while and the eyeball itself doesn't appear to have a problem. It is windy and could just be irritated. This happens every so often. They can also irritate their eyes when a feather from another eagle(t) accidentally brushes it during a food drop or when they are dealing with the prey themselves.

Hope this might help You Judy

Thanks, ondabebe! Sur, our original male at the Surrey Reserve nest, had one eye that seemed to weep a bit occasionally, and he also sometimes kept it closed for long enough that we'd get concerned until we learned it was normal for him.

Sounds as if this may be more common than I'd realized. :)

Just noticed that one of the adults is perched by the nest the eagles used this year.

Will try to look back to see when the eagle arrived.

Added:

The adult flew into the nest they've been using this year at 6:18 pm.

He or she puttered around for a few minutes - the glare off the water was way too bright for me to see what the eagle was doing - hopefully just a bit of digging in the nest and looking around. The adult then flew up to the branch where I noticed them at 6:21 pm.

The adult was still there when the cam moved to have a close look at an eagle perched by last year's nest - I'll let whoever is doing the great zooming report on that.

7:56pm - looked like an eagle flew in area north of OT - maybe to last year's nest tree - below level of nest?
8:10pm - maybe eagle there, just below level of nest??? - movement detected since arrival
although I would expect eagle head show up whiter, but something is there
