Mission Harbour Dyke 2023-2024 Observation and Discussion

I took a good look around and saw a few suspected Eagles on the ground near a farm in Matsqui as well as 1 or two in the air. I am trying to see the two nests that are west of the bridges but the light isn't right yet. ADDED: I looked again, and there is at least 1 adult BE on the ground over there.

I see a nest in a Cottonwood across from our nest, but it's too small to be an Eagle's nest unless it's new and under construction! we'll have to keep watching. Too high to be a crow's nest I would think. I am familiar with an Eagle's nest near there just off the walking trail, and it was active last year when I was under it. I've mentioned before that there are many nests in this area.

Hiya Judy! I stated my intention to log into the cams but didn't hit send.

Not a problem, CC - I didn't log in, just recorded off the stream - and the crow was gone before I noticed a cam moving - I tend to be slow posting.

It would be nice if we saw a bit of the neighboring eagles - and it sounded as if there was a nest in this area before some of the construction in the area, so there may be a vacancy if a new pair is interested. Maybe. I don't have a sense of the distances involved, though we know from Delta 2 and some other areas that nests can sometimes be fairly close (or at least in sight of each other).

I caught a little crow hiding some food in the nest.

Found a large bird perched in a black cottonwood across the water. Large enough to be an Eagle and dark enough to be a 2023 juvenile.

We've got 3 Eagles in sight over in Masqui.

I'll have to verify it in person, but I'm almost certain this is one of the nests I have been trying to see with the cams. This one is visible from the Mission Bridge and then driving West and then north towards the Lougheed Highway before the Cedar Connector.

Bald Eagle jackpot!! I counted 10 in one shot, including some fighting.

You can see them on the ground and perched on the field sprinkler on the dairy farm. What a great spot for Eagles with the broiler barns to the left and a dairy barn on the right.

I'm going to leave the cams where they are. I don't see any privacy concerns as what we're seeing can be seen by walking by on the trail or driving by on the roadway.

I found a pair of adults together across the water and further east. There is a nest close to where they are, I just cannot see it now.

I am OFF both cams.

I've made a pre-set called "Grain tower" as it seems to be the spot to see Eagles right now.

Well, when I was typing the above sentence, another Eagle joined the Grain Tower Eagle and now they are perched there together.

I think that pair owns the territory they are perched within. I say this because I saw two adult Eagles having a tussle in the air nearby, and then they went east and out of view. A few minutes later, an adult joined the Grain Tower Eagle. Just a good guess!
