Lafarge Vancouver Bald Eagle Nest 2017/18 Nesting Season
This thread is for Discussion, Observations, Screenshots. Photos & Videos solely related to actions / events / occurrences at the Lafarge Nest
NOTE:
The Lafarge Vancouver Bald Eagle Nest discussion forum is somewhat unique among the family of HWF nest cams in that it no longer has a camera focused on the nest. In October of 2014 the nest tree along with the closeup camera were destroyed during a windstorm. The eagles then moved back to their original nest located approximately seven or eight blocks east of the Lafarge site.
The sideview cam located on the sand tower was unharmed and now provides our only view of the Lafarge pair. Fortunately the Artificial Nest (AN) located on the former nest tree site was not harmed by the storm and the eagles still return to watch over their domain, perching hour after hour on the AN. Our loyal observers continue to monitor the Lafarge family with screenshots and observations from the sideview cam and photos of the eagles and the nest tree from the ground. Consequently, an exception has been made and photos may be posted in the Lafarge discussion thread. We welcome all screenshots and videos of the Lafarge site and nest tree area captured via the webcams and by ground observers as part of the discussion.
As a courtesy to viewers with slower internet connections, please limit the pictures in each post to no more than a total of 150,000 bytes (4 to 6 average screenshots), and please do not post animations (though it's fine to post a link to them) - and if you would limit the smileys - that would be lovely!

Technical Issues With The Side View Cam:
The sun glare will always break up the picture quality of the camera - especially in the spring while the sun is still low in the sky. As summer nears and the sun moves further north, the problem will likely resolve itself. Clarity of the picture at night is limited due to the distance of the cam from the nest tree.

The 2016//2017 season
After spending the 2015-2016 season defending their territory, refurbishing the Pandora nest and bonding, Pa and Lady left for their annual migration, with Pa having been last seen July 15 and Lady last seen July 17.
They returned on schedule, Pa on September 25 and Lady October 10 ......
...... and took up residence in their nest on Pandora street where they were observed by our ground observers!

We were also able to view our pair diligently defending their territory from the sideview cam as one of their favorite perching spots, the roof of the VersaCold plant, was slowly demolished around them. Undaunted by it all, Lady and Pa perched on the roof almost daily until the day the last of it came down when they moved seamlessly to the AN to continue their vigil.
Just under 2 hours before the LB went down! Lady not giving in willingly! Letting the world know they weren't leaving!

All the while the demolition was going on around them Lady and Pa continued their courtship ......
Houdini was observed flying for the first time on July 29. We hoped to see him/her on the AN but it was not to be. However, we were able to follow Houdini's progress through the observations and photos of our loyal ground observers, Annemie, Steamer (Stan), Eastvan Girl (Christine), urban Eagle (Larry) and Stim (Sandra).
The family was last seen before they left on their migration about August 19. We look forward to an equally, if not more, productive season upon their return for the 2017/2018 season.
........ resulting in one eaglet (named Houdini for his/her ability to hide from our observers) being produced the following Spring.
Houdini grew up to be a fine looking eaglet.

Re: Lafarge 2017/2018 Eagle Nest Discussion/Scaps/videos
Note - some of us use the following abbreviations in our posts to describe the different perch points the Lafarge eagle pair use:
AN (Artificial Nest): The AN is a nest on a pole David Hancock built and installed as backup for the dying tree where the eagles were nesting. The nest tree has since been destroyed in a wind storm; however, the eagles have not used the AN for nesting as yet - but they enjoy perching there, and we're hoping....
AN
SA (Square Arch): We're not quite sure what the proper name is, but this is the structure at the edge of the inlet on the end of a large pipe coming from the Lafarge plant. We don't know if it's used for loading barges with finished product or unloading raw materials, but we sometimes see barges there - and we almost always see lots of birds perched on the top railings of the structure (when the eagles are not present that is!)
SA (at the end of the long pipe)

Re: Lafarge 2017/2018 Eagle Nest Discussion/Scaps/videos
LCE (Left Closer Evergreen) & DE (Distant Evergreen): There are two small green spaces located east of the Lafarge plant site. After the VersaCold plant was demolished the green spaces became visible and we could see that the eagles were using two evergreen trees (the LCE and DE) as perch trees. The LCE is located in a clump of trees in the green space closest to the camera and to the left of the DE. The DE is located in the green space farthest from the camera.

**LB (Little Building): Formerly a favorite perch site:
The LB, was probably the roof access for the large Versa Cold complex. When we first saw the eagles perched on its roof and before we pulled the cam back for a wider view and saw the huge building underneath, it looked very much like a little building.
**NOTE: The Little Building disappeared with the demolition of the VersaCold plant. The last of it came down on February 24, 2017.

Hello everyone,
Glad I got onto the new forum - thanks for setting this up.
On Sunday while walking home from work I walked near the Pandora tree and one of our pair flew over me to the nest carrying 2 or 3 sticks. I guess they are starting to make repairs on the nest and getting ready for the new season. Yay!!!
