WEATHER

In 2008 Nova Scotia Power and the Nova Scotia Museum of Natural History launched the Osprey cam to track the family of Ethel and Oscar and their offspring.. after nesting on a utility pole, power line technicians moved the nest to a safe location where the Osprey have returned to each spring.. for the protection of the birds the actual location of the nest is not released.

Last season had its ups and downs.... Ethel and Oscar returned from their migration safely and had to deal with intruders at their nest .. Ethel laid 5 eggs .. two of them hatched ..they were named Maude and Lewis ... all was going great until August 8 when Oscar was missing ..Ethel took excellent care of Maude and Lewis and made sure they were well fed...all was well until around Aug. 11 when an intruder landed on the nest and Ethel defended her nest chasing the intruder off.. then around Aug.19 another Osprey showed up on the nest with a fish....Ethel didn't protest... it seemed to us that Ethel knew this male and she had an admirer of nest and as luck would have it .. the Male and Ethel provided fish for Maude and Lewis and Ethel trusted him enough to start her migration albeit later than other years and we believe Maude left with her.. the MaleVisitor took care of Lewis until he migrated and the Male was the last to leave the area.. so all in all it was pretty amazing ..we are all hoping for there safe return this season..

Egg Incubation Period... 35-42 days.. and we have seen the eggs hatch later in some cases.

:rh: Information..

Bonding. The pair are confirming their bond from last season.

Mating, you will see the female's tail up.

Possessive, you will see a quick on and off by the male, and other indications off territory disputes.

The annual migration by Ospreys from northern breeding grounds to southern wintering spots and back again never ceases to amaze or raise questions. Here, Dr. Bob Kennedy answers a few

Osprey with fishDescription: Also known as the “fish hawk,” ospreys are raptors that are well adapted for fishing. They have long legs and large feet with specialized barbs on the pads, hooked talons, and a reversible outer toe that allows them to easily grasp fish with two toes pointing front and two pointing rear. They have an oily waterproof coating on their wings, and they can close their nostrils when they plunge into the water. They have slender bodies and long wings that are bent at the ‘wrist’. Their strong wings give them extra lift to fly up and out of the water with a heavy fish. They have a black bill with a sharp hook for eating fish.

WoodLands Bleu akaCarolyn wrote many poem over the season but this was her closing one.

It's a good day for a trip, the wind is just right,
we stand tall and go South, quite spritely.

Jump on it when it's the right direction,
veer into the current and fly, oh my....oh so high.

The storms are offshore, we can go down the coast,
and then together maybe or maybe not, find our idea of toast....a fish.

Dream on our friends, we stay in your hearts,
and that shows the love for an exceptional start.....

Dream......of wind, current, fish and our wish,
your lives to be full of love and joy.

A huge thank you to BlueBird 1 for her commentaries and KitKat1848 aka Marianne for your many posts and observations..

I haven't decided if I will post pictures of the Ethel and Oscar and New male .. as you can see them when you check the 2017 thread and as you all know ID's can change .. and maybe the same Osprey won't return this season....

Note of interest.. Mc Nabs Island is across the water from where live... we went there a few times in our row boat ! :) well I only went once !

I guess what I am saying is that Fledging osprey are not taught to fish.. they learn on their own and by watching ... another example is Osprey in Hack Towers .. they are on their own.. :)
