This Nest is on the MDS( Mountain Daylight Savings) Time Zone

The new cam is equipped with Infrared..... providing night vision for our viewers while not interfering with the Osprey!

Welcome to the 2020 Season At Hellgate Canyon Osprey Nest!

Special thanks to Cal04 for bringing this cam to the attention of HWF and

providing a history for this cam and its sister cam at Dunrovin Ranch ..

This Osprey nest is at the mouth of the spectacular Hellgate Canyon at the edge of Missoula, Montana. It’s in a very busy location, right outside the Riverside Health Care Center and next to busy parking lots, a construction site, a busy highway, and a railroad. However, it’s also an ideal location in many ways, since these Ospreys have riverfront property only about 50 feet from the Clark Fork River. Being so close to people does not bother them, and hundreds of people enjoy watching them every day.

And this is Iris.. the Queen of this nest .. she is one of oldest Osprey in the world .

The female Osprey at this nest is called Iris because she has very distinctive spots on her iris, especially in her left eye. These iris patterns serve as individual barcodes and allow us to identify her. She has nested at this site for many years. Her mate of many years, Stanley, did not return in 2016, and she attempted to breed with a new male dubbed "Louis" after an influential local Salish elder named Louis Adams

Ospreys are consummate fishing birds, and this pair fishes primarily from the Clark Fork River and nearby Rattlesnake Creek. They use their 6–7 foot wingspans to soar above the water, looking for fish, then diving as deep as 3 feet for shallow-swimming prey. Adult Ospreys usually weigh 3–4 pounds, and they can carry prey up to 50 percent of their own weight. Ospreys can live up to 25 years, and they typically lay 1–4 eggs in a clutch

The nest used to be on a power pole about 200 feet west of where it is now. This was dangerous, since the Ospreys could have been electrocuted, causing fires and power blackouts. In 2007, the current nest platform was erected to provide a safer place for the Ospreys to nest. They took to it immediately. Getting the new nest platform set up, and installing and running to high resolution camera for this feed for you to enjoy has been a large effort involving many groups: Riverside Health Care Center, Karen Wagner, Kate Davis and Raptors of the Rockies, Northwestern Energy, Dave Taylor Roofing Company, and Dr. Erick Greene of the University of Montana.

Hi Bev , On 29th at 11:58 am Iris got her talon caught in the egg and then it rolled back into nest , then around 12:48 pm she was picking at it , but left it in the nest . I thought it was in smaller pieces but today when she came and went and it was in view on the nest I thought she'd laid another egg lol but after I watched and scapped I saw her poking at it . I have not seen Louis since May 14th when he was on the Owl Pole eating a fish and left at 1:03 pm , He was on the nest around 12;30 pm mating with Iris before he caught a fish and went to the Owl Pole :)
Thank You Heather

Information

Bonding. The pair are confirming their bond from last season.

Mating, you will see the female's tail up.

Possessive, you will see a quick on and off by the male, and other indications off territory disputes.

Osprey Facts.....Rutland Osprey

The annual migration by Ospreys from northern breeding grounds to southern wintering spots and back again never ceases to amaze or raise questions. Here, Dr. Bob Kennedy answers a few

Osprey with fishDescription: Also known as the “fish hawk,” ospreys are raptors that are well adapted for fishing. They have long legs and large feet with specialized barbs on the pads, hooked talons, and a reversible outer toe that allows them to easily grasp fish with two toes pointing front and two pointing rear. They have an oily waterproof coating on their wings, and they can close their nostrils when they plunge into the water. They have slender bodies and long wings that are bent at the ‘wrist’. Their strong wings give them extra lift to fly up and out of the water with a heavy fish. They have a black bill with a sharp hook for eating fish.

From FB ... I didn't know this

6/6 You may have noticed that our chicks were hatched with down covering most of their body. Soon after hatch their eyes opened and they were able to feed from Iris's bill. The term that describes chicks hatched with these characteristics is "semi-precocial."
#HellgateOsprey

I googled and found this also
In biology, precocial species are those in which the young are relatively mature and mobile from the moment of birth or hatching. The opposite developmental strategy is called "altricial," where the young are born or hatched helpless.

With the way the world is right now, I did not think I could get excited about anything. Iris' return has just made me thrilled!
Oh thank you both of you for the news and pictures.

Now my wish is for that male who was with her the end of last season to arrive to be with her. That would be glorious.
I can imagine that Hellgate Osprey is beyond thrilled to see her again and looking so healthy.
Love you two,
carolyn
