Another beauty from Rutland is moving around the Dyfi nest:
3J a female and cousin of Glesni. Monty arrives with fish
and doesn't share his prey, leaves to the T-Perch...

I'm so glad beeing back again with that amazing topic from UK - couldn't participate internet over 4 month because of troubles with my old provider. I changed & now it works fine, but I'm so far behind reestablishing my 2017 threads in 2018...

Most raptors exhibit what's called 'delayed incubation', meaning that for multi-egg clutches, continuous incubation doesn't occur until the second or third eggs are laid. Blue 3J is not incubating throughout the night which is normal for ospreys.

This morning she resumed incubation duties at 04:31. Just like this.

Telyn: Blue 3J Has a Name

Posted: Wednesday 2nd May 2018 by Emyr MWT
Telyn is the Welsh word for harp.

Over the winter we had been busy planning a DOP benefit concert which took place last week at the 360 Observatory. Catrin Finch, a world-renowned Welsh harpist and Seckou Keita, an eminent Senegalese harpist (harp is called 'Kora' in Senegal) launched their new album "SOAR" on the same day.

SOAR is based on osprey migration between Wales and Senegal, the flights our birds take twice a year, free from country borders, immigration, visas, passports and all the other obstacles our species have put in place to restrict travel between one place to another....

Blue 3J is an English bird with Scottish ancestry breeding in Wales. She probably migrates to west Africa every winter, Senegal or Gambia.

Just as she was laying her clutch of eggs last week, Blue 3J would have heard the beautiful harp music emanating from the 360 Observatory on the still Friday evening breeze. Music that transcends borders and cultures, continents and heritage, music that brings people and ospreys together in one place.

Harp and Kora music resonates down the Dyfi Estuary as Telyn incubates, hours before laying her third egg.

The beautiful Dyfi marsh

Image
Clarach > by CATRIN FINCH & SECKOU KEITA

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urnm8Aync5s

About the track:
Clarach is the name of the first Dyfi osprey in modern times to be born in Wales and subsequently return from Africa as an adult to rear her own chicks in the UK. Back in the Middle Ages, Wales had a large osprey population, but they were persecuted to extinction. Their ancient presence proves that migration between Senegal and Wales is nothing new. “I like the bird’s freedom to migrate to different places,” Seckou says. “They soar their way, and nothing stops them, but they know where they’re heading, where they’ll find peace and be happy. I’ve been on the same journey, but in a different way.” The shift from minor to major echoes the emotional journey of the migrant.

Funny how you can "miss" an osprey.....I miss Glesni, she etched a spot in my heart. I also miss Stanley from Hellgate.

MERIN (Blue W1 - 2015) - is alive, well and breeding - in DENMARK!!!

So, that's the first-born from 2013, 2014 and 2015 all back as adults now. Glesni would be very proud

DYFI NEWS:
TEGID IS BACK!!!!!!!

Tegid was our only surviving chick from 2016 after his sister Ceri died.

He's at the Glaslyn right now - here he is with Aran chasing after him, fish-jn-talon.

Of the chicks that could have come back from 2013 to 2016 (Glesni mothered eight in all to migration age)
- HALF of these have already returned as adults!

TEGID!!!!

Look who just popped in to say hello! This is the first time we have definitely seen one of our own chicks return to the nest.

After an attempt to land on the nest he briefly touched down on the birch perch before finding his way to the low perch.

He remained there for a few minutes before Telyn chased him off. Monty is out fishing so they might bump into each other somewhere down river.

Merin and Tegid Return - Posted: Friday 25th May 2018 by Emyr MWT
What could be better than news of a Dyfi chick returning as an adult? A. Two birds returning of course. And so it was last week. Welsh osprey ringer Tony Cross messaged me early Wednesday morning to say that a Blue W1 (Merin - a male chick from the 2015 brood) was nesting in Denmark.

DENMARK???!!!
Merin is not the first British osprey to favour a more continental lifestyle. A Cumbrian osprey has been doing the northern European rounds, including Denmark, for a while. A Rutland male, another three-year-old like Merin, is currently in the Netherlands - his second year there.
No 14 from the Lake District Osprey Project.
Image
Jutland and Philopatry

Merin's nest in north-west Jutland, Denmark, is around 560 miles (900 km) away from his natal Welsh nest.

Of all the Welsh offspring that have returned to date that have either bred, or made serious attempts to, none of them are nearer than 100 miles (160km) from their natal nest.

Returning Welsh offspring that are/have breeding

Four of Glesni's offspring have already returned as adults
