Savannah Georgia Osprey Nest - 2018 Season

Post by sassyk » Wed Mar 07, 2018 12:14 pm

Welcome to the Savannah Georgia Osprey nest. This is an abandoned eagle nest adjacent to a protected, nutrient-rich salt marsh along the Georgia coast. The nest sits nearly 80 ft. above one of the six Audubon International Certified golf courses at The Landings, on Skidaway Island, near Savannah, Georgia. Some info on this nest from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology site here . Be sure to watch Cornell Osprey's videos posted on the page under the cam view. Many thanks to Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Skidaway Audubon for providing us with a wonderful opportunity to view the osprey family.

Cam link Savannah Ospreys

Over the past years there has been a pair of Great Horned Owls raising young in this nest. Unfortunately there was considerable damage done to the nest tree caused by storms and the cam was reattached to a platform attached to the nest. A pair of Osprey have frequented the nest for quite awhile and it looks like they are getting serious about setting up house. They have both been busy fixing up the nest and protecting 'their' territory. I am looking forward to seeing little oslets in this nest in the next few months.

Some interesting info on osprey on the Cornell Lab of Ornithology All About Birds site here.

A few s'caps post by Savannah Osprey on their site.

Just before 4 pm - the female was seen keeping an eye on the skies above and alarm " chirping". She eventually flew off from the nest. Both were observed chasing a third bird.. Bald Eagle vocals have been heard from off cam, I first heard some around the noon hour and again during this time period.

I switched to the other cam to see if I could catch them giving chase, and I did. It's definitely a Bald Eagle.

The time stamps between the two cams is off but it is the same sequence of events.

The Female comes back and forth to the perch while the Male makes a stop at the nest.. eventually they manage to clear their area of the Eagle and settle back in..

Good Afternoon sassyk and everyone.

Here's the afternoon weather report...
march 10 savannah weather.JPG

I wanted to add a video that I found on the Landings Bird Cam - Savannah FB page of the fish delivery from yesterday morning..
9:01 am : The male brought in 2 FISH at once.. the Female however didn't take either one of them but instead left for a short break. I believe the male then came back to retrieve one of the fish that landed in the nest bowl area to return with it a short time later after the Female returned back to the nest. That's when she took the fish from him at 9:38 am

:vid: https://youtu.be/FrQTyM3Ifcw

:ty: Cornell Lab Bird Cams Project

On a side note... this had got to be the quietest Female Osprey that I have ever seen when a Fish Delivery is made.

Speaking of fish delivers.. and again - no typical Osprey Fish begging. The first one that I came across from the morning was around 10:42 am. ( I didn't go back further on the DVR :%: ). The male brought in the tail end of a fish which the Female gladly took. The male then takes over egg duty.

some views of the Male.. He doesn't settle on the egg right away but instead makes several turns over it on the nest and aerating the nest bowl area at the same time.
