Lower Vancouver Island Osprey Nests - 2018 Season

Post by sassyk » Wed Feb 28, 2018 1:17 pm

Welcome to this dedicated thread intended for observations, photos and videos of the Osprey families who are nesting in the lower Vancouver Island area. I have been watching a number of local nests the past few years; observations and photos can be viewed here.

One of the nests is located on a light standard overlooking the playing field at our local University of Victoria. The University installed a camera on another light standard across the field a few years ago and you will find a link to their web cam on their site here. The cam does not zoom in but you can zoom the page larger for a better view of the Osprey. If anyone is interested in watching this cam and takes screencaptures or videos, please include a note giving credit and thanks to the University of Victoria.

There is an osprey nest on a light standard overlooking the ball field at Royal Athletic Park in Victoria. There have been many oslets fledged from this nest over the years. The nest can be viewed from the parking lot or from the steets around the park.

There is an osprey nest at the south end of Patricia Bay in North Saanich. The osprey have built their nests every spring on top of a communications tower on the property of the Ocean Sciences Centre near the Coast Guard docks and have produced many offspring over the years.

This is where the nest is built, on top of the flat area. Photo taken 23 July 2017.

There is an osprey nest near the Esquimalt Lagoon and Royal Roads University in the forces housing complex. An artificial pole was installed behind the fire hall and the osprey have raised several offspring over the years.

There is an osprey nest on a private property on Wain Road in North Saanich, a short distance north of the Epicure property where the eagles have nested. There is a pump station on West Saanich Road a short distance from the entrance to the Epicure property and I am able to get my small lens through the fencing to take photos. So far I have not managed to get any photos of young osprey; hopefully they will produce offspring this summer.

These first 2 photos were taken 3 July, 2017.

I was told about this osprey nest last summer. It is located in a tree on private property on Marina Way in the marina area in North Saanich. The nest is on a platform that was installed over the top of the tree that broke off. It is a wonderful area to explore around the marina with lots of beautiful gardens and various birds. There were 3 healthy young osprey in the nest when I visited on 6 Aug. 2017 and a family of otters ran across the road and into the bushes at the edge of the marsh area. I plan to visit this nest often during nesting season.

I went by the Osprey nest on Marina Way in North Saanich last night. Mom was sitting on the side of the nest and I didn't see any chicks. Perhaps they were having a nap waiting for Dad to bring some dinner.

I went to the osprey nest on the DND property by Royal Roads this afternoon. Mom was attempting to drag something into the nest when I arrived but it appeared to get stuck around some sticks. One chick was visible behind Mom as she was calling and calling.

I moved up the road to the other side of the nest with much better lighting but no chicks were visible from that vantage point. A closer look made me think it is a cloth apron Mom was trying to drag into the nest :w00t:

I went to see the Osprey nest at UVic this evening. One adult was sitting at the side of the nest. I didn't see the other adult or any activity in the nest.

One adult Osprey was in the nest at Royal Athletic Park yesterday afternoon. It appeared to be sitting at the side of the nest, possibly letting her chicks get some fresh air.

I visited a few nests on Sunday. The nest on Marina Way in North Saanich was busy. All 3 chicks were up looking around and preening. I drove down the road to see the herons and when I came back Mom was in the nest feeding the chicks.

Pat Bay Osprey on Sunday, July 29th. I saw at least 2 chicks in the nest but there could be 3. When I arrived Mom was perched on their favourite branch at the end of the driveway eating a fish.

Mom flew in to the nest and started feeding the chicks.
