May 21, 2018Osprey Chick Self-feeds In Nest For First Time! It's time to check off another developmental milestone for the Osprey chick in the Savannah nest! Here, the chick can be seen making its first attempt at self-feeding, using its sharply hooked bill to tear away tiny bits of a half-eaten fish that was brought to the nest. This behavior is typically observed at around 40 days post hatch (the chick is 36 days old), and we should expect to see the chick start taking fish directly from parents and feeding on its own as the nestling period progresses.

Bev, Ferenz & Judy thanks for all the documentation while I was away. When I logged on Monday I was very sad to find out chick #2 had passed away :( Chick #1 looks very healthy and I managed to find time to watch a good long feeding today.

The chick stood on the side of the nest on one leg for a long time, wingercised a bit more then took a well deserved rest in the rain.

 Bev. Thanks for the s'cap. I sat at the computer with the cam on for a long time today, recording the chick wingercizing. It was windy then it started raining. The chick stood on the side of the nest on one leg for quite awhile then it decided to take a nap after all its hard work. I thought for sure it was going to take flight :D Perhaps tomorrow will be fledge day :woohoo:

 Bev. I was watching for quite awhile off and on today. I saw a video of the chick leaping high into the air and it came down on the side of the nest :thumlft: The cam op thought it would be 'the fledge' but not today. I'm surprised the wind didn't carry the chick off the nest :w00t:

Here's the link to the video Leaping Osprey Chick. I'll be back with some s'caps of the chick wingercizing earlier today.

:woohoo: The osprey chick took its first flight early this morning. SavannahNest captured a video here.
The landing on the lookout branch went well; however, the chick had trouble staying on and finally jumped back into the nest :D The chick landed on the faux branch after the second flight ended :thumlft:
