5:34 am Brit now flies off.
I will be out of pocket for awhile but will check in later.“Eagles: When they walk, they stumble. They are not what one would call graceful. They were not designed to walk. They fly. And when they fly, oh, how they fly, so free, so graceful. They see from the sky what we never see.” – Unknown

How wonderful to see one of the chicks doing a bit of self-feeding! Glad you caught that, Sandy!
I'm going to log in on North briefly - am wondering if I'll be able to get a look at the feathers starting on the edge of the chick's wings.
7:43 am
I am out of the cams.
These are higher res photos taken directly from the cam - click twice to full size for a closer look.
Smaller chick is on the left, and you can sort of see some dark areas on the wing of larger chick, which I think are the feathers beginning to appear.
The larger chick's wing (elbow?) is in the middle of the screen - you can sort of see where the dark feathers are pushing out the natal down (they use the same follicles - very efficient!). There's a bit of the smaller chick on the left - and you can see a lot more of the natal down being pushed out since the feathers haven't come out as much, so there's more down still attached.

This s'cap focuses on the smaller chick's wing - lots more natal down still being pushed out.
And this is a higher res pic of both of them.
At this point, I am thinking that the larger chick is indeed first-hatched SR7, and the very feisty, combative smaller chick is slightly-younger SR8.
8:16 am
Sorry - got distracted - should have posted before stepping away for what I thought was a minute or two.
The chicks are in their rapid growth stage, so not surprising that even with only 16 hours between them, the older should be noticeably larger. Females are also usually larger than males, so that could be a factor. I expect both of them to change quite a bit this week - the White Rock chicks are about a week older, and have a lot of black feathers now.

Adult just landed - I think this is Rey.
From dvr - Brit had flown off quietly at 8:24 am.
My initial impression was that Rey arrived with food - but when I went back to see when Brit left, I realized there was already food where he landed. I had to go back through a frame at a time to determine that he did indeed bring more food.

8:40 am
Larger chick has moved over and is getting some bites.
I don't think the smaller one got any, though h/s was in reasonable position to go for bites, and it didn't look as if the larger one had much either. My guess is that both a quite full, and ready to sleep and grow some feathers.
Even Rey didn't eat that much!
8:45 am
Rey has moved over beside the chicks; I can still see some faint gray shading on the top of the head, left from the smudges a few days ago.
Seeing the notch in the feather on the right side of the back.
Rey flew off at 9:48 am.

Re: Surrey Reserve 2022-2023 Observation and Discussion
If all goes well, we may know for sure in a few more weeks, youngrichone - fledglings are generally larger than adults of the same gender because their first set of feathers is longer than the ones they will have later. It may take a bit more energy to flap those bigger wings, but they also don't need as much skill to get where they're going.
So a female fledgling is frequently larger than either adult, while a male fledgling is generally larger than dad but not quite as big as mom.
8:54 am
I think this is Rey back again - and the chicks are definitely getting bigger!

9:33 am in rollback, Rey takes a quick flight. Was out and back again.
Thanks, Judy, for all the information you provide about the eaglets' growth.“Eagles: When they walk, they stumble. They are not what one would call graceful. They were not designed to walk. They fly. And when they fly, oh, how they fly, so free, so graceful. They see from the sky what we never see.” – Unknown
Re: Surrey Reserve 2022-2023 Observation and Discussion
9:35 am in rollback, Rey was poking in the nest bowl and the smaller eaglet followed behind by picking up a piece of feather. Child does like dad does.

10:18 am in rollback, Rey certainly seems to enjoy spending time in the nest with their eaglets. Both are napping.

Re: Surrey Reserve 2022-2023 Observation and Discussion
I think they are both coming along great … for first timers we have not really worried about much even during the heat wave Brit and rey kept them fed and hydrated … now the feedings are easier for the parents they just swallow any size bit lol … just really feel proud of them … great roll back as well they are a life saver when I am at work
Re: Surrey Reserve 2022-2023 Observation and Discussion
10:42 am in rollback, the larger eaglet is up for a PS.

1:20pm........Yes, Judy and youngrighone, I agree. I think this is right.....larger one is first hatched...........smaller one later afterwards.
IN on both cams..........will take time to check the rollback.
