Welcome to the 2022-2023 Eagle Nesting Season

Image

This Nest is in the Pacific Time Zone

The Surrey Reserve and Nest:

The Surrey Reserve bald eagle nest was built in late August 2018 to replace one that fell down a couple of years ago. It is located in the first bald eagle reserve in British Columbia, land set aside by an agreement between the city of Surrey and developers Dawson & Sawyer to guarantee space for eagles to nest while adjacent land was cleared for a housing development (read the full story here).

The Reserve is on the southern edge of the city of Surrey, in close proximity to the Semiahmoo Bay eagle fishing habitat and not that far from the home of the Hancock Wildlife Foundation. It is now surrounded by townhomes but the nest itself is about 90 feet above the ground in a cottonwood tree, nestled amongst the trees included on the Reserve.

The Cameras:

There are two powerful pan-tilt-zoom cams in place to watch the nest, one overhead and the other in a tree about 35 feet away that allows us to see the eagles come and go from the nest. Both have sound and night vision (not visible to the eagles).

IDing The Eagles:

NOTE: We are just beginning to note differences between the (hopefully) new Surrey Reserve resident pair, temporarily named Surrey Female (SF) and Surrey Male (SM). Significant details are not as pronounced as between Sur and Res which makes it more of a challenge for observers to see the difference between the two. Any that we have identified to date are quite subtle. Hopefully, as time goes on and we become more familiar with the pair, we'll be able to identify who is who more accurately.

Permanent Differences:

Their Size:
Surrey Female (in the foreground) is bigger than the Surrey Male.
Image

Eye Dots: We have yet to find any dots in the eyes of either eagle.

Other Differences:

NOTE: Keeping in mind that any feathering differences can disappear as feathers are molted, here are some of the differences noted during the past season. With any luck at all at least one, if not all, will be there when they return from migration.

Their Eyes:
As well as the differences in the white feathering and skin around the eyes, SM often appears to have a strong dark circle around the colored part of his eye - it's especially obvious in the right hand picture of SM. Of course there's also dark around SF's eye in the pic on the right just above SM's - although I do think that is SF - the "eyebrow"/ridge above the eye is a bit more prominent (which seems common with females) and the beak looks deeper (height from chin to eyebrow, which also seems common with females).

If you look at the third set of pictures (comparing necklines), both show some dark around the eye, but SM seems to have a bit more. And both have a bit of a ridge over the eye, but SF's seems more prominent. Her beak also looks taller, though it's possible part of that is the angle.
Image
Surrey Female

Image
Surrey Male

Their Collar:
The Surrey Female often sports an inverted "U" shaped collar while the Surrey Male tends to show a more even and straighter collar.
Image
Surrey Female~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Surrey Male

Their Upper Tail:
If we are quick enough to capture a screenshot of the eagle's tail when it is flying from the nest, the upper tail can often show a feathering pattern where the white feathers begin and the black feathers end. Athough the pattern can change over time, it generally lasts for at least a season adding yet one more way to help identify them.
Image
Surrey Male~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Surrey Female

Their Lower tail: pictures to come after their return - it's possible they will both have all white tails by then!

The Surrey Reserve Nest - A Brief Yearly Summary:

2018-2019 The first year the Surrey pair, Res (female) and Sur (male ) were featured on live cam. As we waited with baited breath first one, then the other, and finally both appeared on the new nest, built in late August 2018 by the HWF to replace one that fell down a couple of years ago, and finally some showed interest in the nest by moving some sticks. And the rest is history.

Res and Sur went on to produce two chicks this season, named Dee and Ess. Other than Res seriously injuring her right leg (which fortunately eventually healed) followed shortly after by Sur doing the same thing (his also healed!) the season was uneventful. Dee and Ess moved through the eaglet growth stages normally with Dee fledging on July 5 and Ess on July 8. Sur was the last to be seen in the nest area on July 26. (Full season details here)

2019-2020 Res and Sur arrived back from their annual migration September 25 and 28 respectively. They had two chicks this season, named Thor and Loki by local residents. All went well until Loki, the first to fledge (June 28), had an encounter with a power line just 3 days later. Fortunately she (gender determined by her weight) was rescued by OWL and after being observed for a couple of weeks, it was determined she had not suffered any permanent injury and she was released in Peace Arch Park close to her nest area. Loki's rescue and release details here and here. Thor fledged successfully just 2 hours after h/her sibling on the same day.

Loki was last seen July 17 after her release by OWL and Thor on July 16 - an eaglet that may or may not have been Thor visited the nest briefly on July 19. Both adults were last seen on Aug 14. Full season details here.

NOTE: Loki was fitted with a tracker before her release. Her travels can be followed here.

2020-2021 Sur was the first to show up at the nest this season putting in a brief appearance on Sept 25th. Res, however, extended her vacation another 6 days not arriving back to the nest until Oct 2nd. Over the next 5 months they both worked on nestorating the nest, bringing in sticks for the protective wall around the outside edge of the nest and soft materials to line a nest bowl in preparation for their anticipated family.

Eggs were produced early this year, the first on Feb 24th and the second the usual 3 days later, on the 27th. Egg number one hatched on April 3rd and the second just under a day and a half later. Even though they were close in age, Tiku was by far the dominant eaglet keeping Tucca, the younger chick, in submission much of the time when food arrived. (Chick names courtesy of the students from ÉÉC Saint-Joseph in Port Colborne, ON.) Tucca learned quickly it was best to wait until his sibling had his fill before coming to the table. (Due to their size once fully grown, David Hancock believed both eaglets were male.) This worked well until there was a food shortage and there just wasn’t very much left over for Tucca. But even though he was only about half the size of his dominant brother, Tucca hung in there learning to out maneuver Tiku and eventually catching up to Tiku to the point where we had difficulty telling them apart. Other than the food problem, Tiku and Tucca had a typical eaglethood, growing into beautiful strong eaglets.

Tiku and Tucca both “fludged” (accidently fledged) when Tiku, while attempting to fly to a small perching branch that Tucca was sitting on, crashed into Tucca knocking them both off, Tiku onto a lower branch with a relatively clear path and Tucca into a thicket of branches and leaves below the nest where he remained stuck for 2 days. Both parents were in quick attendance watching out for their chicks. Tiku managed to find his way back to the nest the next day but Tucca didn’t get out of the tangle of branches and leaves for two days and spent another two days improving his flying skills enough to get back to the nest. Once back, Tiku and Tucca resumed their life as newly fledged eaglets, coming and going, improving their flying skills and building up their strength until first one and then the other left to follow the salmon runs up north. Tiku was last seen on July 14th and Tucca July 19th. Res and Sur hung around for another couple of days until they were sure their eaglets had left. Both were last seen on July 22nd. Full Season details and relevant links here.

2021-2022 It was a very different kind of eagle season for the Surrey Nest this year! Res and Sur returned from migration at their usual time – Res on September 25 and Sur October 5. All went as usual with both Res and Sur working hard at upgrading their nest from the wear and tear their two active eaglets, Tiku and Tucca, inflicted upon the nest as they learned to fly just a couple of months before.

About mid-November, we noticed that Sur was no longer coming to the nest. It was determined the last time he was in the nest was November 11. However, two adults were seen the following day chasing each other and we now believe it was Sur chasing another male as he defended the nest from the intruder. Unfortunately, it is likely that Sur lost that battle because he hasn’t been seen since. For full details of the confrontation and the resulting outcome please read “What Happened To Sur at Surrey Reserve”

The New Male spent the next six weeks trying to win Res’s affection. Although she accepted his offerings of food, she was not in any hurry to respond to his efforts. She tolerated him at best. Then one day in December, Res just stopped coming to the nest. She was there one day and gone the next. December 23 was the last confirmed date she was seen. Please read “What Happened to Res” for details.

There followed, after Res’s disappearance, a plethora of eagles, both male and female, one by one or in pairs, looking for a new home; however, the New Male held his ground chasing them off one at a time as he lay claim to the nest. At the beginning of January, a lone female arrived on the scene. The New Male was not too happy about this at first, but she was not discouraged by the New Male’s ungentlemanly behaviour towards her and stuck around. Over the next six months the New Male (whom we have now temporarily named “Surrey Male”) and the New Female (named "Surrey Female") have formed a working relationship defending the nest from other intruder eagles and are slowly bonding. He brings her food which she accepts (although not willing to share until she has had her fill), they perch together on the same branch overnight with less animosity, and generally appear to be more compatible and accepting of one another. In the last couple of months, they have actually started to repair the nest together – we hope in anticipation of their returning after their fall “vacation” to prepare for little chicks next spring. But only time will tell if this indeed happens!

SR8's Leg Injury - part 1

I'm setting up this thread for information about what appears to be some sort of injury to smaller eaglet SR8 around June 3rd, when he or she was 32 days old.

Initial posts about the injury start here - viewtopic.php?f=114&t=640&start=6315#p678929

June 3, 1:20 pm - 2:51 pm post with video from 1:20 pm Little Eaglet Tries to Balance

June 4 - lots of food and both were well fed; link to post with Janillb's short videos showing SR8 moving his/her foot and leg

June 5 - possibly less food; both were fed enough, but the larger chick may have had more.
- Comments from David Hancock - HWF policy on sick eagle chicks specifically our SR current challenge
- Comments from Jack Evans, wildlife biologist with the Ministry of Forests in BC - viewtopic.php?f=114&t=640&p=679817#p679810

June 6 - Comments from Jack Evans, wildlife biologist with the Ministry of Forests in BC - viewtopic.php?f=114&t=640&p=679817#p679817

June 7 - SR8 got up on his/her toes and did a bit of flapping, and also managed to get up the side of the nest to join in a feeding at the edge - videos of both in the post here - viewtopic.php?f=114&t=640&start=6510#p680062
- I think there was more food on the 7th than the 6th, and both had plenty
- Janillb has two videos of SR8 walking (and stepping on his own foot at times, which is a bit counterproductive) - link to post is viewtopic.php?f=114&t=640&start=6525#p680169
- Comments from Jack Evans - viewtopic.php?f=114&t=640&p=680213#p680213
- video to go with Jack's comments - SR8 is Moving Better (posted on June 8)

June 8 - Janillb got a video of a bit of sibling rivalry, and it looks as if little SR8 won this time - post is viewtopic.php?f=114&t=640&p=680213#p680224

June 9 - lots of food for both eaglets
- video of both eaglets lying down and calling; good angle to see relative size and feather patterns

June 10 - off topic, but nice s'cap of SR8 with head tucked under SR7 who is partly sheltered from the rain by Mom Brit here
- concern that SR8 is not moving around and didn't get up when an adult came with food; chicks that age generally are OK with rain, but SR8 is smaller and has less feather development, so could be dangerously chilled - posts start here
- SR8 finally up at 12:34 pm and had a good PS (video)
- Brit arrived at 3:01 pm with food, and SR8 got the first bite; both ate and were observed with plump crops afterwards; SR8 snuggled partly under SR7; I suspect this is not related to SR8's mobility, but half a day with no food and energy spent trying to stay warm is half a day not consuming the calories he/she needs for the growth spurt that should be happening now. As long as food keeps coming, he (or maybe she) should reach full size and fledge, but it may take more than the average 12 or so weeks. There were two additional good feedings for both in the evening.

June 11 - Dual feeding by both adults at 6:57 am
- a warmer day with several good feedings for both

June 12 - Comments from Jack Evans - viewtopic.php?f=114&t=640&p=681468#p681468
- video to go with the comments - SR8 Making Progress

June 13 & 14 - both chicks were fed well, and both have begun picking at food and doing a bit of self-feeding, though they aren't yet able to stand on the food while they try to pull pieces off, but that will be coming soon

June 15 - we observed SR8 standing very briefly on his/her right leg without using wings to balance at 1:23 pm
- video - SR8 Standing Tall
- comments from Jack Evans - viewtopic.php?f=114&t=640&p=682129#p682129

June 16 - Comments from Jack Evans - viewtopic.php?f=114&t=640&p=682302#p682302
- we didn't get video of it, but Jack noted that larger eaglet SR7 still appears more submissive than SR8, as was definitely the case when they were younger (and SR7 was definitely a bit larger)

June 17 - another dual feeding at 8:32 am
- unusual fish was part of the feeding - pics start here - maybe a shark? - more pics follow
- SR7 self-feeding at 1:54 pm
- two large late night feedings with lots for both - starts here

June 18 - lots of food; SR7 lifted one foot while flapping at 4:54 pm

June 19-21 - all good - lots of food, SR8 seems able to stand more and walk slightly better each day, SR7 is gradually spending more time standing

June 22 - video of SR7 flapping and hopping (link to post)

June 23 - Comments from Jack Evans re morning feedings - viewtopic.php?f=114&t=640&start=7155#p683658
- video from 11:54 am - SR8 Standing Tall with Big Wings - link to post
- video from 4:10 pm - SR8 Flaps while SR7 Self-Feeds - link to post with Jack's comments
- video from 6:47 pm - SR8 Standing and Walking

June 24 - video from 5:04 am - SR8 Is Walking More Strongly - link to post
- SR7 gets some lift while flapping at 9:44 am (54 days old)

June 25 - SR8 attempted a mantle at 11:41 am
- SR8 standing and flapping at 3:17 pm

June 26 - forum member EagleLanding was with David Hancock and got video of an adult catching a cormorant chick, and soon after, Brit brought a small prey item to the nest, confirming that they had been watching one of our eagles hunting
- two sets of comments by by Jack Evans - viewtopic.php?f=114&t=640&p=684442#p684442 - one on SR8's improving mobility and the other on food brought to the nest

June 27 - video from 6:25 am - SR8 and SR7 Face Off - post
- youngrichone's video from the ground of SR7 standing in the nest - post
- Comments from Jack Evans re strange looking item brought to nest - viewtopic.php?f=114&t=640&p=684666#p684667

June 28 - Our eaglets have names! SR7 is Lof and SR8 is Tyr - viewtopic.php?f=114&t=640&p=684666#p684705

June 29 - short video of older eaglet Lof getting getting more height flapping - Lof Lifts Off - post
- Dad Rey was in early this morning and left after dropping off food; hard to be sure, but Lof is looking as big or bigger than Rey some of the time, and it's not unusual for males to spend less time on the nest as the eaglets get bigger, though this pair hasn't been overly aggressive about food; there were no additional food deliveries, which is unusual; the eaglets seemed fine, though quite vocal about the lack of food deliveries. Mom Brit arrived at 10:09 pm and fed the chicks a few bites from leftovers; Tyr appeared to get more, which is good because he/she is still growing and needs food more than Lof, who may be close to full size by now.

June 30 - Brit in with food at 5:03 am; she feeds Tyr while Lof self-feeds - post
- Tyr seems comfortable standing now, though still wobbly when trying to walk
- video - Different Chirps for Different Chicks (both calling, each making very different sounds) - post
- video - Food Grab by Lof and Clever Move by Rey - posts start here (too much to describe - please check it out!)
- lots of food in the morning, then time for sleeping, preening and flapping

Continued in the next post.

SR8/Tyr's Leg Injury & Other Issues - part 2

July 1 - Happy Canada Day!
- the eaglets were grabbing food from each other and doing some mantling; Lof is getting good at self-feeding, and Tyr is working on it, but hasn't quite got it together yet - series of posts starting here
- Tyr got lots of food from evening feeding - starting here - very helpful because Tyr needs lots of food to continue growing and isn't yet able to eat efficiently on his own

July 2 - Food deliveries - 4:53 am, 5:33 am, 6:28 am, 9:50 am; 12:28 pm
- Lof unzipped food (still hard work) then self-fed; Tyr grabbed some, but didn't eat - starting here
- Lof hops while flapping
- Tyr isn't yet pulling bites from a food item, but is picking up pieces dropped by Lof or lying about the nest and eating them - post

July 3 - Lof is 63 days/9 weeks old; Tyr is 62 days old
- food deliveries - 5:58 am, 6:29 am, 8:57 am; 12:56 pm

July 4 - Lof is 64 days old; Tyr is 63 days/9 weeks old
- food deliveries - 5:51 am, 1:27 pm; 2:02 pm, 6:15 pm, 8:20 pm
- Lof self-feeds while Rey feeds Tyr; suggest to me that Lof is getting good at self-feeding
- a couple of flaps by Tyr; another flap

- food deliveries - 4:59 am (Lof self-fed); 10:18 am; 11:30 am; 1:23 pm; 5:37 pm; 6:26 pm; 7:38 pm
- noted that eaglets are sleeping while standing part of the time, as adults do
- Adult left the food at 1:23; Lof was self-feeding, but not chasing Tyr away and may even have offered food to the smaller eaglet - video
- at 6:26 food delivery, Tyr got his right foot tangled with the adult's foot while trying to grab the food and their talons were locked for a few seconds; good feeding of both chicks by Dad Rey
- both did some flapping, with Lof getting a bit of lift

July 6 - Lof is 66 days old; Tyr is 65 days old
- food deliveries - 9:57 am, 10:06 am; 10:43 am; 11:17 am; 9:50 pm
- Lof hop-flapping; Tyr flapping while standing on one leg
- [ur=viewtopic.php?f=114&t=640&start=7695#p686162l]both chicks fed[/url] by adult around 11:25 am and both had plump crops afterwards
- adult fed both chicks around 9:57 pm; Lof was getting large pieces and Tyr was trying to grab some from the bigger chick

July 7 - Lof is 67 days old; Tyr is 66 days old
- food deliveries - 5:36 am; 12:03 pm
- Tyr grabs 5:36 am delivery and tries to open it but can't; Lof takes control of the prey after 10-12 minutes and is able to open it; Tyr tries to steal bites, successfully after a bit
- Tyr grabbed large portion of prey and was successfully self-feeding, using foot to hold the prey; Tyr finishes at 6:25 am and Lof moves in to begin eating; both also ate together briefly

July 8 - Lof is 68 days old; Tyr is 67 days old
- food deliveries - 8:30 am; 10:31 am; 10:57 am; 2:45 pm; 6:34 pm
- Lof getting some height flapping
- Lof mantling food to keep it from Tyr and one of the adults
- eaglets tussle over food, Tyr grabs Lof's toe by mistake and doesn't get pecked, eventually Lof holds the food while both eat, and Tyr appears to grab food from Lof, like he would from an adult, and Lof just continues eating - video Tyr Going After Food - post
- after Lof was full and moved away, Tyr continued to self-feed fairly successfully, also appearing to back off when full

July 9 - Lof is 69 days old; Tyr is 68 days old
- food deliveries - 4:58 am; 5:10 am; 5:46 am
- both eaglets spent some time looking for bits of food on the nest and eating them

- food deliveries - 5:29 am; 10:54 am; 10:03 pm
- both eaglets appeared full and had nice crops after 5:29 am feeding
- comments from Jack Evans re 10:54 am feeding re species of fish and patience of larger eaglet
- observed new behavior by Tyr - when adult arrived on nest, Tyr hopped with wings for balance to get to the adult, I think getting there faster than walking or running - video Hopping Around - post
- also noticed Tyr standing on his injured/weaker right leg while tucking other leg under feathers - video Tyr Demonstrates the One-Legged Stance - post

July 11 - Lof is 71 days old; Tyr is 70 days/10 weeks old
- food deliveries - 1:39 pm; 3:02 pm; 6:50 pm
- long series of posts with both doing some self-feeding and eating together
- still lots of down on Tyr's legs
- Lof doing short flap-hops across the nest
- Tyr doing some high steps with wings spread

July 12 - Lof is 72 days old; Tyr is 71 days old
- food deliveries - 11:10 am; 4:29 pm
- 11:10 am food delivery was a live fish; Tyr grabbed it first but couldn't figure what to do with it; after he walked away, Lof came in and eventually got in, after which both ate; posts start here.

July 13 - Lof is 73 days old; Tyr is 72 days old
- food deliveries - 4:37 pm
- I'm not sure because I didn't go back and look for it, but I think it's possible that Tyr was standing through the night last night - which usually is a sign of maturity, but in this case might mean that he was having trouble lying down
- 8:51 am, July 13 - Tyr does little hop with wings
- as it got dark, Tyr was standing, and Lof was laying down beside him; Tyr had a respectable ps and we could see a reasonably plump crop

July 14 - Lof is 74 days old; Tyr is 73 days old
- food deliveries - 8:50 am, around 4 pm
- Rey brings food, Tyr ends up with it and gets into it without help, Lof eats when Tyr is done

- food deliveries - 5:04 pm, 6:24 pm, 7:51 pm, 8:49 pm
- Lof is hopping across the nest and getting some air
- Tyr had small ps at 1:02 pm
- Tyr with foot firmly planted on the prey, opening it and beginning to eat; Lof calls for food, but doesn't try to take the food Tyr has; after a while, Lof reaches in for a few bites, then grabs the food to self-feed, and lets Tyr grab bites
- Both chicks fed by Rey(?) at 7:51 pm and by Brit at 8:49 pm

July 16 - Lof is 76 days old; Tyr is 75 days old
- food deliveries - 5:15 am, 8:15 am, 4:11 pm
- Lof appeared to have most of the food delivered at 8:15 am
- Lof flapping
- at 4:11 pm Tyr grabbed the prey but Lof took it and started opening it, letting Tyr also eat; then Rey arrived, grabbed the prey, and fed Tyr (Lof wasn't hungry and seemed more interested in holding items in her feet and hopping around with them)
- Tyr self-feeding on leftovers

July 17 - Lof is 77 days/11 weeks old; Tyr is 76 days old
- food deliveries - maybe early morning; no additional deliveries reported
- cams went off during the night, eaglets were eating around 5:22 am when we logged in to zoom
- noted that Tyr had not been flapping recently, though Lof does frequently

July 18 - Lof is 78 days old; Tyr is 77 days/11 weeks old
- food deliveries - 8:55 am; 10:38 am; 11:06 am; 11:28 am; 12:04 pm; 1:42 pm; after 7:24 pm
- wondering if construction noise is affecting food deliveries
- 8:55 food delivery - Tyr grabbed first, then Lof took it and let Tyr eat beside her
- scuffle for food around 9:07 am - Tyr ended up on nest with wings spread but got back up and walked away only favoring one leg a little as usual; Tyr found food and appeared to have a good grip while self-feeding; additional description posted later; more information about Tyr's tumble in following posts.
- plump crop seen on Tyr
- 3:07 pm - Tyr tipped over
- JudyB's comments - lots of good observations between the previous link and this one
- video - Tyr Takes a Tumble (from 9:07 am)
- video - Tyr's Second Tumble (from 3:06 pm)
- CC's observations on evening feeding and activities - Lof self-fed while Rey fed Tyr; picture of Tyr's full crop; more in following posts

July 19 - Lof is 79 days old; Tyr is 78 days old
- food deliveries - 5:30 pm (both adults, 2 food items)
- review of overnight activity shows Tyr walking cautiously but not stumbling; he started to lie down but got back up without a problem
- 4:54 am - tug-of-war over a leftover; Lof wins; Tyr stumbled while running over to grab at it
- 5:22 am - Tyr found his own leftovers and looks to be holding down the leftover bird with his talons. He pulls the leftover over and tumbles down. It looked like his left leg didn't hold him up. He is quickly up and continues to eat.
- 6:22 am - Tyr has healthy ps
- video - Tyr Stumbles, Recovers, Walks and Self-Feeds - it does look as if Tyr is moving well in some ways, but has a real problem when he steps a certain way, and also finds it hard to get up - which may be why he seems to be standing more than usual lately.
- Tyr seems to be having trouble with his left leg, which is not the one that was bothering him before
- 1:25 pm - Tyr is knocked from the nest - Lof bumped into Tyr and knocked him off the nest :cry1: video - Tyr Falls from the Nest (2:41)
- 2:07 pm - David Hancock arrived at the nest site and was able to rescue Tyr; he reported that Tyr appeared thin and emaciated, and that he would take Tyr to OWL; photos of David with Tyr
- 3:26 pm - per David Hancock, OWL's initial assessment showed that he had a lot of lice (not unusual) - and was one of the thinnest birds they have ever seen
- 5:48 pm - Watching the video slowly, it looks as if Lof may have kicked Tyr
- comments by Jack Evans on Tyr's fall (posted on the forum July 21st, out of sequence)
- 3 videos by David Hancock of Rob doing the initial review and treatment of Tyr at OWL (posted on the forum July 21st, out of sequence)

Tyr's Leg Injury & Other Issues - part 3

July 20 - Lof is 80 days old; Tyr is 79 days old
- food deliveries - none
- Lof spent part of the night sleeping near the right/east perch where Tyr fell, not a place where she had been sleeping
- Lof found leftovers for breakfast, appeared to have a good meal
- Lof stretched her wings and stretched a foot out, similar to what she did yesterday when she kicked Tyr, suggesting it may be a normal move while getting ready to fledge
- update on Tyr - he made it through the night but is in bad shape with a serious shoulder injury
- video of Lof "wintersizing" (exercising her wings)
- it was noted that it very hot at Surrey, which might affect the adults' ability to find food

July 21 - Lof is 81 days old; Tyr is 80 days old
- food deliveries - 11:52 am; 12:42 pm; 8:41 pm
- Lof sleeping standing up with head over her shoulder, like an adult
- video - Lof getting good height
- noted that the ongoing construction is closer to the nest this week, which might disrupt the adults from making food deliveries, though these are urban eagles and used to living in areas with lots of human activity; video showing area of construction
- 11:52 am food delivery may have been a fish head and appeared to have a fair amount of meat

July 22 - Lof is 82 days old; Tyr would have been 81 days old this morning
- food deliveries - 9:51 am; 11:21 am; 3:20 pm
- looking back through the timeline, I noticed that I didn't see any pictures of Tyr lying down after July 14 and didn't notice any reference to him doing any flapping after July 13. I realized I'd been focused on how well he was standing, and on his walking - and was not paying attention to whether he could lie down to rest the muscles in his legs as Lof was doing last evening
- Lof is doing some hovering
- update from OWL - Tyr didn't make it; he was found dead this morning; he weighed 1560gm or 3.4 pounds at intake, a weight more appropriate to a 3-week-old eaglet; Rob from OWL told David Hancock that he didn't remember ever seeing a bird this thin that recovered - but both David and I are optimists, and were hoping that Tyr would beat the odds. Fly free and far, Tyr - you were so strong and so courageous - if only that was enough.
- Rob from OWL said there were no tests done to help us know why Tyr was so underweight when there seemed to be plenty of food; my guess is that they were focused on trying to save him - and now that focus needs to move to all the other eagles in their care that can be saved
- Ryan's video "Remembering Tyr"

July 23 - Lof is 83 days old; Tyr passed away July 22 at almost 81 days old
- food deliveries - 8:58 am

July 24 - Lof is 84 days/12 weeks old
- food deliveries - 10:50 am
- flapping in the rain
- Brit goes out to the left/east perch after delivering food at 10:50 am - not a place where she spend a lot of time - perhaps showing Lof a place to branch
- Lof is looking larger than Brit, another indication she might be female
- Lof practicing picking up nestovers and hopping with them
- Lof is getting great air with her flapping
- closeups of wet Lof after the rain
- comments from David Hancock about reduced food deliveries (and need for food) near fledging

July 25 - Lof is 85 days old
- food deliveries - 6:30 am, 1:43 pm
- link to Philjo56France's memorial posts for Tyr
- Lof up trunk and onto a branch - quick, but branching; video and details
- video of 1:43 pm fish delivery and hopping with food

July 26 - Lof is 86 days old
- food deliveries - 8:15 pm, 9:26 pm
- Lof is practicing hopping and flapping and picking up nest materials and flapping/hovering with them
- skleynhans's great photos from the ground of Lof catching some air
- youngrichone's video of the work area from 7:30 pm
- on 9:26 pm food delivery, Brit started eating the bird herself, then fed Lof when Lof came over squealing at her; after a bit of that, Lof started vocalizing at Brit, who wisely left
- Brit went out to the west perch/nest support before flying off, perhaps showing Lof how to branch out there

July 27 - Lof is 87 days old
- food deliveries - 7:04 am
- 5:10 am - Lof is awake and doing a great job preparing her own breakfast of the leftover bird from last night
- 7:04 am delivery was a fish
- update on the construction being done near the nest - thanks, skleynhans!
- amazing closeups of Lof
- map of area around the nest showing areas where construction is happening or is planned in the near future.

July 28 - Lof is 88 days old
- food deliveries - 7:13 am
- discussion of where the adults find food here and posts on the next page or two; more here
- bees or wasps have been reported on the nest over the past few days; they don't seem to bother Lof
- Lof has been having healthy looking "poop shots" (we normally use "ps" as shorthand for that); not reporting them all as long as things seem as expected
- Lof is grabbing items on the nest and flap-hopping with them - good practice for carrying prey
- ground observers photos of Brit on the night perch
- possibly a bit of hovering as Lof jumps and flaps

July 29 - Lof is 89 days old
- food deliveries - 5:55 pm
- Lof hovering and running up the slanted branch
- Lof is active and producing regular ps's which indicates that she does not need food; David Hancock described this change in the need for food on July 24 (link above)
- Sandy_W's video High Flying & Playful Morning

July 30 - Lof is 90 days old
- food deliveries - 7:37 am; 1:34 pm; 8:24 pm
- Lof is going up high on the slanted branch - more actively branching - Sandy_W's video Climbing higher & higher
- video of 1:34 pm food delivery where Lof chases Dad Rey off the nest after grabbing his toe, then grabbing the food - viewtopic.php?f=114&t=640&start=9270#p691597

July 31 - Lof is 91 days/13 weeks old
- food deliveries -
- comments from Jack Evans re necropsy for Tyr (2 posts from 3 emails)
- comments from Jack Evans re American White Pelican with bacterial infection (and some symptoms that might be related to what we observed in Tyr)
- Lof fledged at 7:48 am (91 days/13 weeks old)
- Sandy_W's video of the fledge
- 1:15 pm - local observer skleynhans spotted Lof
- skleynhans's video of the eagles from the ground, pre-fledge
- comments from Jack Evans on Lof's fledge

August 1 - Lof is 92 days old and fledged 1 day ago
- Lof did not return to the nest; I'm not going to add links but there were sightings that might have been Lof flying and might have been an adult nearby
- Ryan's videos from the ground of Brit near the nest - https://youtube.com/shorts/EuPFGMsPimQ?feature=share and https://youtube.com/shorts/JdTSMSEaFvE?feature=share

August 2 - Lof is 93 days old and fledged 2 days ago
- Brit was on the night perch in the evening; Rey and Lof were not seen today

August 3 - no eagles seen

August 4 -
- 5:33 am - adult, maybe Brit, perched at top of the Douglas fir
- 12:18 pm - calls that might have been Lof and adults; no one seen

There were no additional sightings until Brit and Rey returned in the fall.

1845 - Well looked who dropped in!

The SM last seen on August 1, 2022 has returned from migration. :rh: :rh:

Welcome home SM!! I absolutely knew today was the day!

He inspected his nest quickly and then with familiarity, flew over to the upper perch near the buildings (2 adults nearby setting) where he and the SF are known to rest at night :rh: :grhug:

P.S. he still has the frayed feather which was visible at 1846 just before he flew to the night perch
