SR6's beak
20210514_020.jpg

SR5's beak
20210514_019.jpg

One indicator of gender on eagles is that the beak of an adult female goes back slightly further, so the end of the hinge is slightly behind the center of the eye; the end of the hinge on a male is generally right under the center of the eye. It is a very small difference, so if the head is turned even slightly, you really can't tell. And I don't know if that part of the eaglets is still growing. But I am somewhat curious - so I'm including this strange picture of SR5's beak facing the same way as SR6's beak so I can compare them.
20210514_022.jpg

And I really still have no idea. Perhaps eventually we'll be able to guess based on size - female fledglings are almost always larger than the resident male and are often/usually larger than the resident female (their initial feathers are longer than the feathers they'll have as adults, so they are the largest they will ever be when they first start flying). Male fledglings are often/usually larger than the resident male, but usually a bit smaller than the resident female. A fledgling that is bigger than both parents is almost always female.

Res arrived on the nest carrying a small food object in her beak; both chicks hurried over, and SR5 grabbed and swallowed the object; the picture is right after SR5 ate the prize.

Adult in with food - not sure who.
20210514_024.jpg
20210514_025.jpg

I think SR5 is getting most, but SR6 is getting some. And while SR5 is going after SR6 from time to time, the younger chick isn't staying down for more than a second or two.

I think SR6 actually got this piece.
20210514_026.jpg

And I think this is Res, in spite of the eye - though it's hard to be sure.

Feeding stopped at 1:47 pm - I think SR6 grabbed the last little bit and swallowed it whole.

Res flew off a minute or so later.

Chicks are sitting side by side.

And now one of them has moved. I'm seeing some food in SR5's crop, not much in SR6's crop, though it may partly be the angle.

I absolutely loved the "Big Eagles Video" especially after the debate was over and SR6's beak was opening and closing.
I try not to compare the eagles to people but watching SR6 was like watching a kid after he/she was told to do something.
The debate and the mumbling afterward.

Absolutely priceless. I've watched the video three times and every time I chuckle to myself.
Well done.

The chicks are sleeping on the nest - and I did a quick check of the dvr and didn't see any additional visits by the adults, though I may have missed something.

I was hoping we would see more food by now - but the eaglets are at an age and stage where they can miss a day of food without any risk to their development (though their happy enjoyment in being fed constantly may take a bit of a dive).

And these wonderful long days make it likely there will be additional feedings this evening - if you see one, please post what you see. Just knowing there was food and one or both eaglets got some is the big thing - knowing which adult and which chicks were involved is great, but not essential.

Thank you all, and have a good evening.

Priceless, Priceless video of "Big Eaglets"!

Showing who's boss and the other says Bring it On!! I ain't little no more! Absolutely love it..
I agree with Sandy, Sr6 mumbling afterwards is hilarious.. Makes me think
of my daughter when she was little, she always had the last word walking away.

I showed my hubby and we both chuckled.. What a pure joy they are to watch at this stage. Thank you JudyB..

9:35 I am just checking on this family and the little one is getting fed a private meal. I took a look back and didn't see food come in so maybe nestovers. SR5 got a small but decent meal but wouldn't let SR6 near the food. He managed to steal a few bites anyway. When the meal was over and both Res and SR5 walked away, SR6 continued to peep and Mom found more food and fed SR6 a nice private meal. It is 9:39 now and mom is still feeding little bites.

9:40 meal is over but I am glad they both got a small meal each before bed. :rh:

9:42 Family now settling in for sleep with just an occasional peep from SR6.

Oh and I Loved the video! Adorable!

6:53 SR6 was fed one bite from the side and managed to get into a position of being able to snatch two more - the rest were his/her majesty's

Norht cam off.

South cam view : 5:12 am nest time, Adult in with small prey ( couldn't tell if Res or Sur by cam view).

Sr5 and Sr6 both up for feeding, Both grabbing bites from Parent. Both getting bites from what I could tell. Short meal. Then Parent flew off.
One of the chicks grabbed the last of the tidbit from parents beak to finish the meal off.

Sr5 and Sr6 checked around nest for nest overs tidbits.

They are getting so close in size it was hard to tell who is who this morning, could be the angle of the cam but Sr6 surely is catching up to not being so little against Sr5 .

A good start to the day with a snack in the morning.

0750 - SR5 is standing tall, perhaps looking for signs that the parents are hunting for food! Little SR6 is trying to self feed. I will be doing my food dance today :) :rh:

Good morning, everyone, et merci beaucoup for all the great suggestions from your students, amandafrado! We are hoping to have an announcement before too long!

Looking back at the dvr and adding some s'caps to go with some of the reports.

Adult arriving at 4:59 with some small food item in beak.
20210515_013.jpg

I think SR6 grabbed it initially but dropped it, and then SR5 got it an worked on it for a while, as SR6 watched.
20210515_015.jpg

And then SR6 grabbed it and worked on it for a while.
20210515_016.jpg

And a couple of minutes later, SR5 grabbed it back. It was too big for them to swallow, and apparently not easy for them to pull pieces from, though both were making a good effort.

Adult arrived at 5:11 and was feeding the chicks something - not sure if it was the earlier food or leftovers; if she(?) brought something, it was small.
20210515_017.jpg

SR6 on the front/left managed to grab the last bit and swallow it.
20210515_018.jpg

The adult left a few minutes later.

It's now 8:23 am, and except for the brief visit CC398 reported, the eaglets have been alone.

0850:08 - Adult floats in with another small food item possibly? SR5 gets the most bites while SR6 decides to head out on a long pilgrimage to get to the other side of the adult - they are hungry. The adult moves and SR6 sees their chance to run over, head down, and grab a bite or two. The adult flies. Their effort is wonderful. More please :D

Adult in with small scrap food, 10:24 nest time, Sr6 runs grabs it from Parents beak, tries to eat it, it is something small, stringy.

Parents flys off at 10:25
both eaglets now trying to eat what the little scrap is . Sr6 gave up on trying to self feed the little scrap. Sr5 still inquisitive as to what it is.

That was something seeing Sr6 run right to parent to grab the food item.

He is learning what you have to do to get fed in his world. Growing steps and so wonderful to see both making milestones each day on their growth to juvies.

Small feeding prior to this one Sr5 got the meal, Sr6 didn't get any bites for Sr5 put Sr6 into submission.
chicks are hungry, waiting for a nice big meal!

I read names soon for these beautiful eaglets! exciting!

Watching Sr6 trying to self feed himself on some nest overs on the nest. Sr5 watches intently.

Practice makes perfect, even in the eagle world..

Hello everyone,

It's so amazing to watch these eaglets growing and thriving. Thanks to everyone for your posts and videos and pictures. I loved the video of "Big Eaglets", Judy. They are developing their capacities so rapidly, it's just a joy to observe. I catch up on the previous days activities and progress over breakfast in the mornings, and I really appreciate being able to follow along with all your observations, etc.

Looks like they would both like a good meal soon. I saw SR6 succeeding at self-feeding a littler earlier. I couldn't tell from the angle, but it looked like s/h was even holding down the food item with a talon at one point.

I just caught SR5 doing some beautiful wingersizes. S/he's standing tall and confident on h/h legs for longer and longer periods. Here's a few pictures I just took.

Another small food item and feeding happened. I didn't note too much other than SR5 got pretty much all of it. Little SR6 might have snatched a couple pieces but they were not in a great spot for the adult to pass anything to. SR5 is hangry and kept pecking at SR6. Poor little one. At least these multiple deliveries will add up in SR5's crop so by the time a bigger meal comes, SR6 will do better. Something is better than nothing also I believe.

Just wanted to add, although I didn't note the time, SR6 has had a small PS within the last hour.
