Good morning, everyone, and thanks for the weather, Bev - looks as if it will be a nice day at the nest.

SR5 is 17 days old, and SR6 is 16 days old; because of the time of day they hatched, SR5 is about a day and a half older.

It's now 7:44 am, and Sur is on the nest feeding SR5 while SR6 watches.
20210420_001.jpg

It looked to me as if he found part of the flat fish brought in a couple of days ago, but it's hard to be sure. I'm going to look back on the dvr to see what's been happening so far this morning.

Added -
7:52 am
SR5 walked away from the feeding - and SR6 moved front and center and is now getting fed. Keeping fingers crossed for a good feeding for the little chick.

A few larger-sized closeups. SR5's crop is looking nice and full in the first one.

From the dvr....

Adult on the nest is up at 5:40 and looking for leftovers to feed. Both chicks are lined up, and SR5 is being fed first.
20210420_006.jpg

SR6 did get a bite or two, then SR5 put the younger chick into submission with a quick peck when the adult had trouble finding additional food. SR6 stays low for a while, but keeps an eye on the adult (probably Res, but I can't tell for sure).
20210420_007.jpg

5:57 am
SR6 is up and manages to move closer and gets some bites.
20210420_009.jpg

And the cam went to color about then, the adult looks like Sur, and the food appears to be one of those flat fish, or fish heads. I'll check the South cam to see if/when there was a switch.

SR6 is getting lots of bites. :D

From the south cam dvr....

Res was feeding SR5 at 5:45 am, and then she called and flew off.
20210420_010.jpg

Sur arrived at 5:49 am - and I can't see if he brought food, but it seems likely as he immediately started working on something under his feet.
20210420_011.jpg

Little SR6 had a respectable ps at 5:48, indicating that s/he is getting enough food for basic functions, though maybe not enough for rapid growth, though that may come.

I just watched North at 5:49, and couldn't see if Sur brought food, but the behavior following suggests that he did.

Continuing from the dvr....

6:03 am
SR5 came over to join the feeding at some point, but doesn't seem interested in the food offered, and isn't pecking at SR6. I think SR6 is also full (hooray!) because s/he wasn't really interested in the last couple of bites offered, and it didn't appear to be because the younger chick was afraid of being pecked - just not interested.
20210420_013.jpg

The feeding was over at 6:05 and Sur settled down beside the chicks.

6:21 am
Res arrived, possibly with food; Sur immediately jumped up and both were calling. Res is on the left, and the fish head was already there, but there may be something dark under her right foot.
20210420_014.jpg

I think SR5 is wondering how Mom's feathers would taste.
20210420_015.jpg

Sur flew off around 6:26, leaving Res on the nest with the chicks.

Continuing from the dvr....

6:29 am
Res begins offering food to SR6 while the older chick sleeps; I can't see what the food is, which is probably as well.
20210420_016.jpg

6:31 am
SR5 wakes up, and Res offers him/her some bites.
20210420_017.jpg

SR6 goes to sleep; if they continue to take turns napping, feeding may be a bit more peaceful. :%:

So much for that theory - SR6 looked up, SR5 reached over, and SR6 promptly put h/h head back down. But this time it's OK because the younger one did get lots of bites earlier. I think I'm seeing a small but plump crop here.
20210420_018.jpg

Feeding was over at 6:37 am and Res moved over nearer the trunk on the right to settle in with the chicks for a while.

I need a break from the computer - will be back later. Please feel free to post if you see any activity - thanks!

I'm back! Before I go back to the dvr, I'll mention that it's now 9:46 am, and both chicks were lined up and getting bites of something. Of course, as soon as I was halfway through typing that sentence, SR5 went after SR6 (showing his/her growing wings) - but that's not uncommon for eaglets to do - and I also got a glimpse of big crops on both chicks.

Continuing with a report from the dvr...

6:53 am
Res stood up and was looking around - and then flew off. The chick are in a little pile in the nest cup area.

6:58 am
One of the adults was back with some sort of food - maybe a fish head? (I suspect some of the fishing boats in the area dump those where the birds can find them.
20210420_019.jpg

Not sure which adult yet, but the chick being fed is (no surprise) SR5, while SR6 is cleverly disguised as a feather.
20210420_020.jpg

7:03 am
Well - SR6 got a bite, and SR5 pecked at the younger chick, who went down into submission, but was back up a moment later. And this time SR5 grabbed the little one a couple of times and gave h/h a shake. It's not uncommon, and while it probably isn't pleasant for the chick being shaken, it's exceedingly rare for any actual damage to be done (why am I reminded of dodge ball?). But I am surprised that it happened when SR5 has been eating well (though I suppose the fact that SR6 has also been eating well this morning may mean the little chick is less submissive, and the older one does plan on remaining the dominant chick in the nest.

Continuing from the dvr...

SR5 got a few more bites, then Res (I think) looked as if she was going to try to brood her big chicks.
20210420_022.jpg

And this is actually Sur - I got a look at his eye and tail, both of which help me know who is who. Sur's right eye is often dark looking - the feathers don't come as close to the eye as on Res, and I think that eye my run or ooze a bit occasionally. And Res's tail usually looks smooth at the end, while on Sur the feather on the far right seems a little shorter.

We post more pictures of his eye - this is what I saw on the tail that made me believe this is Sur:

Continuing from the dvr...

7:33 am
Sur got up and walked away from the chicks. SR5 was sleeping, but SR6 popped up.
20210420_024.jpg

Sur began removing feathers(?), I think from the food item that was delivered earlier. SR5 is now up, and SR6 is lying down. I didn't see the little one put into submission, but wouldn't be surprised if it happened.

7:36 am
Sur begins feeding SR5
20210420_025.jpg

7:40 am
Hard to see in the shadows, but SR5 has a big crop.

7:47 am
SR6 is up - and hopeful.
20210420_027.jpg

But unfortunately SR5 stood up then and knocked the younger chick over, so it decided to wait a bit. But by 7:48 am s/he was trying again. And this leads into the feeding that was happening when I first got to the computer this morning.

SR5's big crop.

Continuing...

7:50 am
Now it's SR6's turn - I can see a little crop bulge, but nowhere as large proportionately as SR5's.
20210420_031.jpg

SR6 is moving closer and grabbing more bites.
20210420_032.jpg

SR5 is up, so SR6 turns defensively - but still reaches for the food.
20210420_033.jpg

And SR5 did grab the younger one, at which point Sur stopped the feeding and went around behind them to sit by them for a while (not sure that it's technically brooding, but it is making sure they are warm and safe). I didn't get a look at SR6's crop, but I saw some big bites go in.

8:18 am
Sur continues to sit with the chicks - this is what I was mentioning earlier about his eye.
20210420_034.jpg

8:19 am
Res arrived with a large bundle of "fluff" for the nest - and I think she wasn't looking at her back-up camera as she tried to pull it into the nest. :w00t:
20210420_035.jpg

Sur decided it was time to leave - and Res began feeding SR6.

Continuing...

SR6 got a couple of bites, then went into submission - and then SR5 got a couple of bites.
20210420_037.jpg

Feeding was over at 8:35 am; SR6 may have gotten a couple of bites, but SR5 got most of them this time.

8:46 am
Res got up and moved over to the food, giving SR6 a bite along the way.
20210420_038.jpg

8:52 am
SR6 is dozing, while SR5 is eating. This s'cap is full screen.

Continuing...

9:09 am
Look at the size of the crop on SR5 - s/he really should be ready to go into a "food coma" - what we call it when a chick has eaten so much they can't stay awake any longer.
20210420_040.jpg

9:23 am
SR6 is up and eating while the bigger chick naps.
20210420_041.jpg

I need to take a break - will check back later to continue the story.

Hi Surrey Reserve zoomers and followers

SR6 should be fine. Putting the younger one in submission seems to be the norm.
As long as SR6 can sneak in some extra bites, she/he will get stronger and larger and hopefully, the bonking and grabbing will not be as intense.

Enjoy your day. I am rooting for SR6 and SR5.
I just have to figure out who the parents are and differentiate between them both.:)
