It's 10:52 am, and the chicks are dozing in the dappled sunlight.

SR6's beak

SR5's beak

One indicator of gender on eagles is that the beak of an adult female goes back slightly further, so the end of the hinge is slightly behind the center of the eye; the end of the hinge on a male is generally right under the center of the eye. It is a very small difference, so if the head is turned even slightly, you really can't tell. And I don't know if that part of the eaglets is still growing. But I am somewhat curious - so I'm including this strange picture of SR5's beak facing the same way as SR6's beak so I can compare them.

And I really still have no idea. Perhaps eventually we'll be able to guess based on size - female fledglings are almost always larger than the resident male and are often/usually larger than the resident female (their initial feathers are longer than the feathers they'll have as adults, so they are the largest they will ever be when they first start flying). Male fledglings are often/usually larger than the resident male, but usually a bit smaller than the resident female. A fledgling that is bigger than both parents is almost always female.

Res arrived on the nest carrying a small food object in her beak; both chicks hurried over, and SR5 grabbed and swallowed the object; the picture is right after SR5 ate the prize.

Adult in with food - not sure who.

I think SR5 is getting most, but SR6 is getting some. And while SR5 is going after SR6 from time to time, the younger chick isn't staying down for more than a second or two.

I think SR6 actually got this piece.

And I think this is Res, in spite of the eye - though it's hard to be sure.

Feeding stopped at 1:47 pm - I think SR6 grabbed the last little bit and swallowed it whole.

Res flew off a minute or so later.

Chicks are sitting side by side.

And now one of them has moved. I'm seeing some food in SR5's crop, not much in SR6's crop, though it may partly be the angle.

I absolutely loved the "Big Eagles Video" especially after the debate was over and SR6's beak was opening and closing.
I try not to compare the eagles to people but watching SR6 was like watching a kid after he/she was told to do something.
The debate and the mumbling afterward.

Absolutely priceless. I've watched the video three times and every time I chuckle to myself.
Well done.

The chicks are sleeping on the nest - and I did a quick check of the dvr and didn't see any additional visits by the adults, though I may have missed something.

I was hoping we would see more food by now - but the eaglets are at an age and stage where they can miss a day of food without any risk to their development (though their happy enjoyment in being fed constantly may take a bit of a dive).

And these wonderful long days make it likely there will be additional feedings this evening - if you see one, please post what you see. Just knowing there was food and one or both eaglets got some is the big thing - knowing which adult and which chicks were involved is great, but not essential.

Thank you all, and have a good evening.

Priceless, Priceless video of "Big Eaglets"!

Showing who's boss and the other says Bring it On!! I ain't little no more! Absolutely love it..
I agree with Sandy, Sr6 mumbling afterwards is hilarious.. Makes me think
of my daughter when she was little, she always had the last word walking away.

I showed my hubby and we both chuckled.. What a pure joy they are to watch at this stage. Thank you JudyB..

9:35 I am just checking on this family and the little one is getting fed a private meal. I took a look back and didn't see food come in so maybe nestovers. SR5 got a small but decent meal but wouldn't let SR6 near the food. He managed to steal a few bites anyway. When the meal was over and both Res and SR5 walked away, SR6 continued to peep and Mom found more food and fed SR6 a nice private meal. It is 9:39 now and mom is still feeding little bites.

9:40 meal is over but I am glad they both got a small meal each before bed. :rh:

9:42 Family now settling in for sleep with just an occasional peep from SR6.

Oh and I Loved the video! Adorable!

3:04 am Checking the DVR after JudyB's post .....

Mom returned with a small item at 6:53 pm and SR6 was discouraged from joining in

6:53 SR6 was fed one bite from the side and managed to get into a position of being able to snatch two more - the rest were his/her majesty's

6:55 pm Meal was over pretty quickly and Mom left
