Re: Surrey Reserve 2020-2021 Observation and Discussion
2:10 am Nothing new to report since JudyB posted - except a strange perpendicular light in back of the nest just above the infra red light that I have never seen before -it looks to be quite a distance from the nest. I wonder what it is? Its been there since dusk closed over. Looks like a stationary spotlight shining straight up.
11:45 am Looking back to my last observation I didn't see anything to report except it is looking quite smokey out there.
4:47 pm Still no sign of an eagle. Maybe they have already left on migration.

Good morning, everyone, and thanks for stopping by and posting the weather, Bev!
I've done a quick check of the dvr back 12 hours and didn't see any visits to the nest.
The South cam stream was frozen for a while, but I did some spot-checking for the last couple of hours and didn't see anyone in the perch tree.

I just checked the north dvr quickly and did a quick look around with the South cam, and didn't see any eagles anywhere. I hope they are all enjoying lots of fish!

Good morning, everyone!

Special Air Quality Statement
Metro Vancouver is now issuing an Air Quality Advisory for Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley Regional District because of high concentrations of fine particulate matter that are expected during the next few days. Smoke from wildfires burning in the interior of B.C. and Washington has moved into and over our region, contributing to elevated fine particulate matter concentrations and hazy skies. Onshore winds forecast for Tuesday may begin to clear the smoke.
11:19 am
I checked the dvr on both cams and didn't see any visits; the north cam was offline for a few hours, and I might have missed a quick in-and-out, but I don't really think they stopped by.
Stay safe, people and eagles!

I just checked the dvr and did some spot checks of the south cam with its view of the perch tree, and did not see any visit.
I'll log into the cams briefly for a look around.
It looks pretty hazy looking over the water - not sure how much is fog and how much smoke.
This is from the North cam - the more water to the left preset - and you can see the water, but also very hazy.
Good night, everyone!

2021 Cam Maintenance
Matching Drive
Matching Drive
A little over 17 weeks ago, we met Tiku from our Surrey Reserve nest; this is just before he or maybe she made it all the way out of the shell:
And now Tiku and Tucca from Surrey Reserve and Hope and Chase from Delta 2 have all set out to explore the world.
We do still have one young eagle to watch - this is Romeo from our White Rock nest, who hatched 6 weeks later than Tiku:
At 11 weeks, he (or maybe she) is practicing perching on the nest supports and exercising those big wings. Eaglets generally fledge (take their first flight) between 10 and 14 weeks, and it's my guess that will happen in the next week or so.
And you know - I haven't really thought about this before - but our little window to access the nests and clean the cams and do any other necessary work isn't always that much longer than the 35-40 days it takes an egg to hatch. Last year the Surrey Reserve adults didn't leave until August 14 (though they weren't visiting very often after Thor left in mid-July) - and Dad Sur was back on September 26. Different pairs have different schedules - and it can vary from year to year - so it would be great if we could get ready now.
With that in mind....
We will be posting more details about our Adopt-a-Nest program, the new option to adopt one of our eagles with a tracker (details soon), the Monthly Donor program - and the work we need to do on the 10 cameras we now have at five different nests.
The important thing to know is that at least the first $1000 in donations toward our cam maintenance fund drive will be matched by long-time supporters of Hancock Wildlife - so the time to donate is now!
Details about How to Donate

Thank You!

Special Air Quality Statement
Air Quality Advisory - August 3, 2021
Metro Vancouver is continuing an Air Quality Advisory for Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley Regional District because of high concentrations of fine particulate matter that are expected during the next day or two. Smoke from wildfires burning in the interior of B.C. and Washington has moved into and over our region, contributing to elevated fine particulate matter concentrations and hazy skies. Onshore winds forecast for today may begin to clear the smoke.
Smoke concentrations may vary widely across the region as winds and temperatures change, and as wildfire behaviour changes.
At least it's not outrageously hot and is cooling off at night now.

I looked back over the dvr for the last 12 hours and didn't see any visits.

I checked the dvr and didn't see any visits.
It's been a busy, happy day spent with family, so I'll say goodnight now.
