12:30 pm Had to get this on video - Tiku and Tucca's impressive fly-ins that Judy B reported on earlier this morning!
Tiku and Tucca's beautiful fly-in!
Following the fly-in:
9:21 am The kids spent some time alternating between resting and grazing the nest looking for and finding little bits to nibble on before heading for their favourite perchng spots!
But first a view of their tails for ID purposes......
I am not 100% sure but I think Tiku is on the right and Tucca on the left (JudyB?)- Assuming I am right Tiku makes the first move to Mom's perch! From there the video is self explanatory including their squabble over who gets to perch where!
Tiku and Tucca relax at home before leaving on a new adventure

Thanks for the videos, gemini - and I agree on the tail IDs!gemini wrote: ↑Sun Jul 04, 2021 12:35 pm12:30 pm Had to get this on video - Tiku and Tucca's impressive fly-ins that Judy B reported on earlier this morning!

And I do think Tucca is getting more confident and more adventurous - so much fun to see that happening!

Someone just arrived on the east perch - I'm logging in.
Added -
Lovely fly-ins - and then a bit of a face-off, or perhaps a wing-off.
I think this is Tucca in the center who was pouncing on that old gull wing and carrying it around.
Or maybe this is Tucca working on leftovers in the feeding corner. (Assuming you can have corners in a round nest, and ignoring the fact that they happily eat anywhere and everywhere - but they do often take food to that edge of the nest.)

They both seem to be carrying random things around the nest - I'm guessing potentially edible scraps off some old carcass, but it looks so neat to see them acting in unison.
They were sort of going around in circles, and every time I figured out who was who, they'd move around and I'd lose track.

I think this is younger fledgling Tucca on the south side of the nest, away from the feeding area.
And older fledgling Tiku in the feeding area at the "bottom" of the nest from the North cam view - he still has a bit of a white spot on his tail.
Higher res - clicks larger - Tucca on the right, and Tiku showing his best side (or at least one of them) on the left.
1:57 pm - I need to step away from the computer for a few minutes.

Welcome back - and I'm glad you caught Tiku and Tucca on the nest this morning!Realitia wrote: ↑Sun Jul 04, 2021 10:14 amHello, everyone!
I've been away camping and just getting caught up on all the drama and major adventures of Tiku and Tucca! Still on posts from June 25, when Tiku returned to the nest after their fludge! Lots to go through, and keeping an eye on the live nest at the same time. I'm so happy to see them back at the nest, resting and relaxing.
A quick observation: both kids were chilling on the branches, then one flew off at 9:38 (not sure who is who). Not wanting to miss out on the action, the other followed a minute or so later. That's the blur in front of the nest. Sorry, the images aren't clear, just wanted to give the time stamp.
I was out near Port Renfrew, and on Friday on the beach there, at one point we saw 8 eagles soaring in circles above us! It was absolutely incredible. There was one juvie with the eagles. We also observed three eagles, with two fighting, quite dramatic.
Okay, now to continue reading all your posts, which I appreciate and enjoy very much!![]()

I love watching eagles soar - though usually only see one or maybe two around here. But sometimes quite a few osprey, who also are lovely to watch.
I did finally get Tiku and Tucca's great adventure posted on the HWF Facebook page - maybe a link?

I'm afraid I haven't done a good job of keeping track of our fledglings today - but they were hanging out on the nest (from 2:12 pm):
Both were down in the nest at 3:22
When one flew off (thinking Tiku, because of how smooth the take-off was) - followed by the other one a minute or so later.
Off They Go (2 min)
It's now 5:47 pm, and I checked the dvr and didn't see any visits (though I did hear some calls when I was online earlier doing other things, so I'm pretty sure they are still around).
And I'm still hearing calls nearby at 6:06 pm.
Good night, everyone!

6:09 pm
One of the fledglings just arrived at the North side of the nest (the eating area that's out of sight most of the time on the North cam and on the far/shadowed side of the nest from the South/wide angle cam.
I really need to call it a night - but happy to see someone back on the nest.

Re: Surrey Reserve 2020-2021 Observation and Discussion
Here's Tiku and Tucca's Great Adventure as posted on Facebook (even more videos posted above):
Eaglets Tiku and Tucca at our Surrey Reserve nest are now 13 weeks old and flying well – but getting there was a bit rocky. At 8:39 am on Thursday, June 24, Tiku tried to land next to younger sibling Tucca and they both fell off the branch by the nest and down into the maze of branches underneath. Tiku managed to get balanced on a little branch and flew off about 20 minutes later, but didn't make it back to the nest until the following evening. (The adults were feeding him while he was off the nest.)
Tucca had a harder time – though only a day and a half younger, he was at least a few days behind in development, probably because there were some days when food was scarce and only the older eaglet was fed. Less experienced and less strong, Tucca ended up further down among the branches, with no clear path big enough for an eagle to fly out. And Tucca was there for two of the hottest days ever in BC, with no way for the adults to get to him to bring food.
For two full days, Tucca called for food, and flapped as much as he could among the branches, and moved around a bit, looking for a way out. And at 10:05 am on June 26, Tucca officially fledged, flying out of the nest tree and landing on a nearby Douglas fir. This was not only his first flight but also his first landing – and like many a young eagle before him, he grabbed the branch and spun around, ending up upside down. He let go, and landed on another branch, also upside down. And then (I love this part of the "Tucca on the Move" video), instinct kicked in, he turned his neck in one of the impossible looking ways eagles can so his head was right side up, picked a destination, turned his body to match his head as he was letting go – and flew off!
And disappeared for more than a day. Late in the evening of June 27, local observers reported that they could see both fledglings perched in different trees – and early on June 28, they both came to the nest.

Went back on the DVR to see if I could get a "flying in" shot of the eaglet that was on the nest when JudyB posted only to discover h/s had been "on the nest" since Dad made a dine dash visit (8 seconds) at 4:21 pm. Both eaglets came flying in, Dad took off - who can blame him! - and a tug-of-war over the meal ensued! I am not sure again which eaglet is which so I'll go with E1 and E2, E1 being the victor in the tug of war. E1 consumed the major portion of the huge meal until h/s, I suspect, couldn't eat anymore! E2 manage to salvage some leftovers which h/s dragged from one end of the nest to the other before finishing and moving up to the crooked branch and leaving at 4:53 pm. Meanwhile E1 moved on to the nest support perch where h/s remained until 6:08 - probably too full to move!
The kids have a tug-of-war over dinner - (4:50)
Picking up on the North cam where we left off in the first video with E2 going up to the crooked branch by way of the little perch and flying off. Watch to see how E1 managed to fly into the nest on the North side from the nest support perch! A most unusual approach! I am wondering if h/s had intended to fly off but was just to full and changed h/h mind last minute! H/s ended up lying down and resting for another hour before taking off again at 7:31 pm!

Wow, you can tell it is close to the Border, lots of fireworks! Be safe eagles and all critters. I always feel sorry for animals with the fireworks.
