Hello everyone,
Just checking in to see if Loki has returned to the nest yet. Thor is on the nest, perched on the upper branch at the moment. I can hear an eaglet squeeping quite insistently, quite close to the nest; it's difficult to tell, but it doesn't look like it's coming from the one perched on the branch, s/he seems so relaxed and just looking off. It's hard not to worry about Loki!

Loki had a bit of a mishap last night and is at OWL; initial checkup is promising but they're keeping him/her for a few days. Details in a minute.

Update on Loki

12:44 pm
I just got off the phone with David Hancock. He learned that a fledgling was rescued from the general Surrey Reserve area yesterday evening, so gave them a call, and the fledgling was first seen about 300 yards from the nest, so almost certainly Loki. I don't know Loki's gender but am going to use he for simplicity instead of him/her.

Loki was first seen hanging from a power line about 300 yards from the nest. Someone saw him there and called OWL (the Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society). By the time Rob from OWL arrived, Loki had fluttered or flown down into a ditch under the power line, and climbed out of there (so is able to walk). When he saw Rob approaching, he made a couple of hopping flights - and might have escaped except there was a fence and he didn't get high enough to get over it before Rob grabbed him.

From their preliminary examination, he seems in good shape - but there is a chance he got a jolt from the power line, and if that happened, there may be internal damage that won't appear for 5-10 days. Rob said there was no "burnt feather" smell, which is a good sign - but they want to observe him for a few days to be sure.

David said that if all goes well, he plans to band Loki before he's released - which will help us tell them apart, if Loki returns to the nest (which he may not do, even if he's released nearby).

We will keep you posted as we learn more.

It is very windy. Thor has been on the high perch, flapping and screeping at the top of her/his powerful lungs.

And just flew down into the nest, and is checking to make sure no one hid any food while s/he wasn't looking. (They didn't.)

While David Hancock was looking for Loki, he reported seeing a couple of fledglings, two adults, and some turkey vultures soaring over the water - not sure if Thor was part of that group, but she wasn't on the nest at the time, and he did see one of the youngsters heading towards the nest. Thor did not immediately arrive on the nest - but might have gotten distracted on the way.

I'm going to be away from the computer for a while.

I've been noticing that the sound and the video aren't always quite in sync. It's close enough that usually I don't notice, but hard when trying to tell who's making the call.

I also think Thor has been letting Loki do a lot of the calling - but right now it's definitely Thor with the very powerful lungs.

Thanks for letting us know, JudyB! So happy to hear that Loki has been rescued! Fingers crossed he continues to show no further problems.

Meanwhile, Thor is enjoying the luxury of being able to keep any nestovers to her/himself without being challenged!

Thank you all for stopping by and sending good thoughts for Loki.

Thor is preening - I'm not completely sure which part of him/her is where, but it does suggest that s/he is very comfortable on the high perch.

Oh, I'm happy to hear that Loki has been rescued and so far doing well.
Some birds land of power lines and don't get a jolt, while others do - does anyone know why this would be so?

Maybe Thor is screeping so much because s/he's missing Loki!

Thanks for keeping us up to date, and I hope Loki will be released soon with no complications.
