3:03 am This video is a compilation of egg rolls from 10:38 pm -1:22 am as the little chick slowly emerges from the shell -

:vid: Hatching chick

At 1:24 am it looked to me like the wee one was finally free of the shell or maybe earlier?? (I defer to your decision JudyB!)

:vid:I'm here (I think!) and I'm okay even if my Mommy did step on me!
Wow - Mom sure had a restless night - so glad you were here, gemini, and thanks for stopping by, Sue!

I agree with 1:24 am as the official hatch time.

And it was really scary seeing Mom step on the egg and (I think) break off a piece of it; happily it does look as if the chick is fine - and I didn't see any indication that there were veins in that part of the shell, which is also good; removing a piece of shell before the chick disconnected would be a bigger risk to the chick.

I need to do a few things so have logged out of the cam for now. I got this a minute ago.

Well, there was just a switch to Sur, and little SR3 and the egg were uncovered for a while and I was able to get some closeups (though could not see the large possible pip on the second egg); unfortunately, the embedded cam was totally pixelated when I finished, and was skipping back to the beginning while I tried to record from it - so what we'll have is a few s'caps from the embedded cam (with a larger screen) and a video of a floppy little chick from the direct link.

The North cam reverted to its normal, non-zoomed position when I rebooted it, which lets us see that the food Res brought yesterday in preparation for the hatch was apparently a rabbit. I'll pop in quickly and go back to the closer preset so we'll get better views of the chick and egg when the adults give us a peek.

Cam is zoomed in and I am out.

Here's a close look at the second egg - either what we saw overnight was a piece of shell - or it's on the other side. There's nothing I can be sure is a pip on this side, though there's something towards the upper right that might be a bit of shell that's pushed up. It also might be dirt.

This is the best shot I got of the chick from the embedded cam.

And this is fuzzy, but gives a sense of how the tiny one was wiggling around.

Great pictures - thanks so much, Sue! I love the open mouth!

Sur was up to check on the chick at 8:08 am and there was a switch to Res at 8:11. They were both on the nest the with Res's cowlick clearly visible but the South cam dvr is not cooperating so no picture of that. I was focused on the North cam at the time.

I don't think the dark line is a pip/crack - but it's hard to be sure. I'm thinking it will be time for a feeding attempt soon, and I'll try to get a closer look then (if I'm online).

Another look at the egg and chick; the chick was up and moving around, but didn't seem to be demanding food yet.

Good question, alexanderernie! The folks who were listening during the hatch said the chick was very vocal as it was making its way out of the shell - so maybe he or she is resting his/her vocal cords now! :D

They do have food on the nest, and I expect we'll see a feeding before too long.

How exciting to have our wee eaglet bobbing around. Hopefully all is well with it and with the second hatch!
Thank you for the great coverage of the hatching process.

Thanks, stim - happy you were able to stop by!

First Feeding!

1:28 pm
The chick was very strong as he/she reached up to take bites from Mom Res - and his/her lungs were very strong, too!

The feeding was over at 1:31 pm - nice long feeding for a tiny chick, who actually was doing pretty well connecting and getting some bites.
