Hi again - thanks for the updates Bev!

Res brought a fish to the nest at 1:40pm

I didn't get a good scap of it, but it was a medium, size fish...
Untitled 38361.jpg
Dee [top] got most of the bites at first - Res ate as well... :thumlft: Res had to continually put her wing out to balance since she isn't able to place her injured foot properly.
Untitled 38380.jpg
Ess [bottom] watched and leaned forward for a few bites, but was biding h/her time and then snatched the remaining fish. It looked like Res was able to get some of it back, and both she and Dee had a couple more bites- but Ess did get a nice, big piece!

When the fish was gone, Res wing-hopped around the nest and picked up some nestover bird and I think Dee got a few bites of that...

Hello all! Sur arrived a couple of minutes ago with some sort of prey - which I can't see and which he is eating. The chicks were uninterested at first, but did get up...

I noticed around noon June 6th momma injured her right leg. She is still hunting and bringing food to the chicks but is hurting.

Welcome to the forum, BETHINB.C. and thanks for sharing your observations! As you may have noticed, we are calling the female Res, short for Reserve, and the male Sur, short for Surrey - though now that they are raising chicks I often just call them Mom and Dad.

Thanks again for joining the forum, and we’d love to have you continue posting your observations!

Hi Beth, and thank-you so much for your post...Welcome to HWF!

As far as I know, we don't know how Res was injured...just that she is not able to put much weight at all on her right foot..[as of yesterday]

However, I saw her bring fish today and also a black bird - [both times with that injured foot/leg], so she is somehow managing...

Hope you'll continue to keep an eye on the nest and post here...!

ADD: I edited my post to reflect that the prey items brought to the nest today by Res were a fish and a black bird ....

Goodness! Sur has just arrived with something red - and his beak is bloody. So are his tail feathers...I have no idea what the prey might be!

I don't know what the prey is [but probably a mammal - JMO] - it's a mysterious mess... there is lots of it, and Ess, [bottom right] at the moment, is getting the lion's share..

Dee, [top right] for some reason, seemed to be holding back...maybe not hungry?

Ess got the majority of that feed - but it seemed that Dee was not that hungry...Dee did take some bites, but maybe just because food was available..

Looks like Sur is looking after the food for the chicks, he was just here and they all ate. I haven't seen Res since this afternoon. I hope she is ok.

I'll be back to check before I go to bed and see if things have changed. o far Sur is doing a good job of feeding. Have no idea what he could have brought that was that full of blood.

I’ve sent an email to David Hancock and to Myles who works with him on some of this, and will post when I hear from them. As long as Mom Res is otherwise healthy, it would be very hard to catch her to have her checked out. The female at our Delta 2 nest broke a leg a few years ago, and is almost completely recovered now so I think Res has a good chance of recovering in time.

Good night, everyone.

I talked to David tonight re Res's injured leg. He asked me to try and get some video. and I said I'd try.

Crossed everything and managed to get the short in the power cord to connect long enough to get a couple of hours charge on my computer and record some vids of three of her feedings from the DVR. They are concentrated on Res s' leg. If my computer holds out I will upload them to youtube! So far the connection is holding (it is anchored in one spot.) Off to you tube and with any luck at all I will be back with links.

It's 10:23 pm and both kids are sleeping. No adult present.

Videos of Mom and her bad leg.

:vid: 12:38 pm feeding - edited to favour view of Mom's injured leg (5:49)

1:30 pm feeding lasted until 1:56 pm

:vid: Last few minutes of 1:30 feeding (3:26)

2:31 feeding - interesting interaction between one of the chicks - here's my take on it!

Mom can't tear the fish apart or down the fish whole - she takes it to her chick (I think fully intending on eating it herself) and between the two of them they tear it open. She then grabs it away from the chick and tries to swallow it again. She still can't swallow it so lets the chick tug on it again and enough breaks off so she can manage to swallow the whole thing!

:vid: Part of the 2:31 feeding. (3:19)

I have no idea who got what during these feedings as I was concentrating on getting the best views of Mom's injury for David. Suffice it to say they both ended the day with huge crops! I don't think either one went without!
