Re: Surrey Reserve 2018-2019 Observation and Discussion
Good morning BETHINB.C. -
From having watched these critters since 2006, it has been my experience that each will fly when he/she is ready. I have seen then leave at 10 weeks and 13 weeks, sometimes they don't come back but more often than not they remain at the nest site for a couple of weeks at least and Mom and Dad continue to bring in food - or not! Each nest brings something a little bit different. Usually they disappear one by one sometimes the chicks first and other times the adults. I think I have see a bit of everything over the years.
My expectations would be they will fledge and return to the nest, the parents will bring them food for a bit and one day one at a time we will not see him or her any more - this can take anywhere up to about a month!
Sorry to be so vague but it really can be different with each eagle family! Mother nature is mysterious! In any case it is fun to watch!
I actually have a video of the first nest I ever watch of the youngest, Sid, having a temper tantrum when mom dropped of some food and had the nerve to expect him to feed himself - he carried on until she gave in and fed him even though he had fledged several days before!

Thanks for fixing that Judy! That was my fault, I forgot to click publish! Duh! Glad you could see the little branch, I thought maybe I was seeing things! I loved how she decided to pull off the little twigs of leaves - practicing for her own nest maybe!
Re: Surrey Reserve 2018-2019 Observation and Discussion
Ess was on the nest when Mom Res arrived with one of those icky but nutrient-loaded things we think is afterbirth from seals.
At 12:05, Ess appeared to be chewing on a branch and wiping (or feaking) her beak....
...when Dee jumped down. There seemed to be quite a bit left, and Dee was still working on it at 12:11 am.
It's now 12:23 pm, and Ess is sitting on the edge of the nest, while Dee has moved out to the lower perch. She seems more comfortable there than Ess did this morning - maybe because Dee was out there quite a while yesterday.
And Ess is now lying down, at 12:25 - and the North cam is pixelated again, so I'll go in for a reboot and also see if it was show the bend in the slanted trunk that the eaglets are using as a perch.

Morning gemini, and ty for the information, I always wonder ahead of time but I guess that is normal. This is my first eagle nest but I did have many birds nest at our other home, Sparrow's will egg their young on till they leave the nest and we always have one stubborn one that takes its time..lol. I guess all animals are different. I sure hope Dee and Ess make it and soar through the skies for a long time. I thought they banded them but I guess not.
Judy thank you also.
Off to go look again...lol. xx

I have a couple of things to post - and I see the North cam is pixelating again. There's supposed to be plenty of bandwidth there, so I'm not sure why this is happening.
Anyway, here is the high perch where the trunk bends as seen from the North cam - I made a preset called high_perch.
I also made a preset for this location and am calling it east_perch since it seems to be roughly the opposite direction from Point Roberts, which David Hancock told me was to the West (I'm directionally challenged - and don't know the area; not a great combination). The actual preset may be a bit different - I had to go to the Point Roberts preset and pan back to confirm the direction, and by the time I got back, Dee had left.
I also noticed that Ess was keeping still enough that I thought I could get a picture of her tail tips:

The other thing that happened was a food delivery - and I apologize for the gore, but here's a closer look at the flounder-type fish the adult delivered.
And of course while I was rebooting North to get a better picture of the fish after Dee gave up on it, there was another delivery. Sigh. Here's the fish - not sure if fish with hornets is better than fish with big eaglet foot.
And since Dee went up to the high perch, I took a s'cap of her there - which doesn't work well, though it might be helpful if one of them goes back to the smaller branch to the side up there.
I am out of the North cam.

The flounder delivery at 12:43 pm looks like Sur to me - couldn't get a clear shot, but I think I see the spot on his tail here, and it looked like his eyes, though that's harder to describe.
Here's Dee hurrying in to see what Dad brought, while Ess isn't bothering to get up because she already knows it's flounder - and they don't seem to really like flounder, probably because it's harder to get into than some of the other meals - though both can and do eat it when hungry.
Dee did work on it for a while before walking away.

Re: Surrey Reserve 2018-2019 Observation and Discussion
Dee moved away from the fish at around 12:56 pm, and did a bit of flapping. An adult came in at 12:57, and I couldn't see anything in the talons, though it was too blurry to tell.
I think she may have landed on the flounder, and it's possible she was prepared to feed them (I think this is Res) - she seemed to come from the upper left corner of the screen, so may have been perched higher up in the tree.
Or maybe not - the chicks moved closer, and she got ready to leave. This is when I guessed it was Res, based on the reddish tail and the trace of a white stripe on her back. I also thought I'd seen her little tuft of feathers sticking up.
After she left, Ess went back to dozing in the nest, and Dee went up to the high perch. I couldn't see any new food in the nest once the North cam came back up.
It's now 1:25 pm, and Ess is still dozing and Dee is still hanging out up on the high perch.

FWIW,
I pretty much live my internet life at Point Roberts. We are most definitely west of Surrey.

What a fun video - thanks, gemini!
At about 4:16, Dee (I think) jump-glided gracefully down from the high perch, and picked up the flounder and gave it a shake.
I'd always laughed about them strolling (or hopping) around the nest with a fish - but now that I've had a look at the wasps or hornets that are also interested in the leftovers, I think it's a brilliant idea. The eaglet I think is Dee then settled down and got to work on the flounder.
Around 4:35 am, Ess moved closer, either to look for other leftovers - or with an eye to grabbing the flounder now that Dee had opened it. Dee moved to the other side of the nest - and Ess didn't go to see if there were scraps where Dee had been, so may not have been that interested in food.
Dee looked at some other parts of the nest, and may have found a bit of the messy thing from morning, then returned to the bit of the flounder that was left. Ess did some nice stretches.
At 4:44 Dee went back up to the high perch, after a couple of flaps in the nest.
It's now 4:55, and Dee is still on the high perch, and Ess is lying down on the nest dozing.

7:45 pm Checked back to 4:55 pm and all is quiet. Ess is currently lying down and Dee is still up on her perch and as I say that, she jumped down. However, it was short lived - she went back up a few minutes later. Ess back down in the nest. No new food visits that I could see.

11:30 pm Not much change. No visits from a parent that I could see and Ess and Dee in the same place I left them at 7:45 pm.
