Good Morning, everyone! Thanks for the weather, Bev, and thanks for the evening report, gemini.

Shoulder is bothering so I won't be posting a lot today.

There was a visit around 5:15 am - I think by Mom Res, though I'm not sure. I loved watching the fledglings arrive!

I think Dee got the food first.

Then after a while Ess started grabbing bits.
20190713_006.jpg

And finally got close enough to grab what was left - that big mantle on the right is Ess!

I think Dee was fairly full by then - she didn't try to grab it back, and eventually went up to a perch.

I'm away from the computer for a while.

Fun Food Fight!

Ess waited for her opportunity and took it! However, as JudyB said, Dee had had her fill so I suspect didn't give it her all! Beautiful mantle by Ess!

:vid: Dee and Ess square off over breakfast!

I am out for the day again! Will drop in again this evening.

I'm so glad you made a video of that, gemini - it was such fun to watch - and Ess is getting really good at sneaky grabs! Not to mention mantles. And Dee is getting good at defending - and as you say, gemini, I think her heart wasn't into it this time.

7:26 am
Some little birds with black on the tops of their heads and long grey tails visiting the nest - which makes me think the fledglings may be on a field trip to Semiahmoo Bay or some other scrounging place with one or both adults.

Good morning everyone. :)

Hi Judy, those are the Black-Capped Chickadees we also have some brown-capped ones. They have been one of my favourite birds of all time. they call like chic, chick, chickadee..and its so nice to hear. I guess they are in Chickadee heaven with all those flies in there..lol. I've seen them around the nest before but not in it.
Judy, thank you for the video of them flying home for breakfast o lovely for sure.

Thank you gemini for the video, so cute to watch them fight over food. and the Mantling! wow!

Thanks for the ID on the little birds, Beth! They reminded me of chickadees but looked a bit different than the ones I’m used to seeing in Maine. Or maybe it’s just that I’m not used to looking down on them!

There was a food delivery around 7:50 - only one chick arrived - my guess is Ess.

Your welcome Judy, that must be the reason I know because we lived in a two-story home with tree's below, they used to nest there and I could look down on them. They are o sweet and fast!

I always feel sad when I see the eaglets eating birds.. :cry1: I know its nature but I love all birds so much.

I noticed both fledglings arrive at the nest at 10:23 am (which means they are learning that following other eagles can be useful, because some eagles know where to find food!), and a bit later I noticed that the seemed to be eating - so my initial thought was that I'd missed one of those very quick food drops.

But now that I've watched again - I think they just set to work looking for leftovers, and finding the bits of food left on things like the seagull(?) wings from yesterday and other bits and pieces, and also taking some naps on the nest.

And do you remember yesterday when Sur went to a high perch on the left/West side of the nest and I mentioned that I thought the fledglings noticed? Not sure which one chose that for an initial landing point today - but one of them did.

:vid: Fledglings Assemble! (90 seconds)

I'm noticing that they both have some lighter colored feathers - but am not sure if they're consistent enough to use them for ID. This is Ess standing up and Dee lying down.
20190713_010.jpg

Ess left at 11:10 and Dee left at 11:13.

It's now 11:23 am and the nest is empty.

Hi Judy, yes I did notice, I also love to see them swoon in and land on the nest or branches. I haven't seen any more food drops either. Maybe later.

I was wondering why we're not seeing many fish (I agree about the birds, Beth) - and at 1:01 pm, one of the adults landed with a fish. I think this may be Sur - the eyes looked right, and i didn't see any white stripes on the back.
20190713_011.jpg

He(?) started working on the fish, and I think he finished it, and left at 5:06 pm - and I never heard a peep (or a screech).

Both the chicks showed up around 1:30, and they had some serious flapping at each other (I almost wonder if they thought there was food somewhere). At the end of the pushing and flapping of wings, I think Ess pushed older sister Dee off the nest - Ess is definitely not the submissive little sister now that she's found her wings!

:vid: Squabbles (2:14)

After that, Ess took a little nap in the nest, then moved out to the lower West perch.
20190713_013.jpg

Dee returned about 2:10 pm, and chose the branch on the East side nearer the South cam (instead of the East perch they had been using, which is nearer the nest, and partly hidden behind the slanted trunk going up to the upper perch - and we're going to need a diagram if I'm going to have a chance of remembering the names of all the perches, though David Hancock is correct that using directions helps). Anyway, once Dee landed there, Ess moved to the nest - perhaps to try to claim it.

Both eaglets are back on the nest, though Dee went up to the upper perch right after this screenshot.

Checked back to JudyB's last post and Dee remained on the nest tree calling out quite frequently. She hung out mostly on the slanted branch but did eventually go down to the nest to scrounge for food at least once - finding nothing - she eventually left at 5:42 pm!

A quick drop at 7:00 pm by Res. Dee must have been close by watching as she arrived very quickly after Mom to claim the very small meal - a rodent of some kind I think!
7-13-2019 7-01 pm.jpg

Dee finished her meal and lay down for a bit and in came Ess who figured she should have that spot. She stepped on, poked and prodded Dee, and generally made a nuisance of herself until Dee finally gave up and left with Ess settling into Dee's spot.

Good afternoon, everyone! I'm also late getting here - and likely to be busy for the next couple of days, but I'll check in when I can.

Looking back quickly.... (some of these are based on my notes)

Ess on the nest at 6:07 am, then off again. Adult in with food at 6:22 am, followed by one fledgling; second one tried to land a moment later and was fended off by first one with big mantle. North cam was pixelating so not easy to tell who has the food - when the image clears, the tail feathers are in the wrong position. 6:47 am - I think this is Ess - and I'm hearing someone calling as well. It's been the same eaglet the whole time - just hard to identify.
20190714_001.jpg

Second fledgling showed up just before 7 am (peeking around the corner of the nest - it's still Ess in the nest, so Dee on the perch.
20190714_002.jpg

And I just realized I missed a delivery when I was watching this live this morning. Actually I missed two very rapid deliveries. And the second one I think the adult passed the fish to one of the fledglings without touching the nest!
20190714_003.jpg

That was great! Two deliveries within about a minute - and when the dust settled it looked to me as if each chick was holding a fish and taking it to her preferred dining area!

:vid: Food For Both (1:16)

I'm not sure which parent or parents made the delivery - I know the bay is close, but I'm thinking they may have each brought a fish because I don't know if one adult could get there, grab a fish, and return that quickly.

And I've reached my limit for typing for the time being.

Here are my notes if anyone wants to look back.

Something happened at 8:53:10
Someone left at 9:07
And at 11:29 (approximately) an adult came in and one of the fledglings put on a lovely flying display on the way to the nest - I'll try to do a video of that in a while.

On a personal note - I have my next arthritis treatment on Tuesday, and it's not uncommon for my joints to act up for a week or so before the treatment - and often I start feeling better by a day or two afterwards - so I'm hoping I'll be able to be here more by mid-week. We do also have both friends and family from out of state in the area this week, so we will also be doing some things with them.

Hope you're all having a good day!

PS - I rebooted North.

6:37 pm Went back to 2:45 pm and both eaglets have been hanging around the nest tree all afternoon calling out off and on, switching back and forth between the favorite sleeping spot and the slanted branch perch as well as a couple of other perches. I didn't try to keep up with who was where but I do know that Ess left first at 6:06 and Dee followed shortly after at 6:31- I guess they decided calling out wasn't going to get them something to eat!

I spoke with David H today, who was surprised that none of this family have left the nest yet. He figures this is just another eagle family who hasn't yet read his book about eagles and he is not pleased! :%: :grlol;

One arrived around 5:23 am

And they were both there by 5:28 am.

Sur arrived at 5:46 with part of a bird, and was followed in by both fledglings, one after another (they had flown off at some point - maybe to pester him!).
