I was just finishing up recording the flounder incident when Sur arrived with another fish - one that was much more to Dee's liking!
Ess was also more interested, and jumped right down to help - which was Sur's cue to get out of the way!
Dee knew Ess was hungry - and really wanted this fish - so she did the first thing that came to mind when you're an eagle this age and have a fish this size - she swallowed it!
It will be clearer in the video. And the video runs on for a while after Dee finished her meal for two reasons. First, because Ess seemed to be stumbling a bit in the nest and I wanted to document that; I was sort of wondering if a eagle's foot can go to sleep while perching, then thought perhaps she landed a bit wrong or on something sharp - and she was moving better after the first few seconds. The second reason is that it suddenly occurred to Ess to look at the last place she saw the fish - that's about 2:25 into the video, and worth skipping ahead to see! The video ends with Ess going back up to her perch (she seemed to be walking normally by then).
